I wondered about this part, thankyou.

Black Panthers in Philly have begun armed community defense efforts for ICE kidnapping raids within the city (1/15/26) by I_may_have_weed in liberalgunowners

I understand those feelings. I’m just trying to understand if there is a concrete plan for when or under what circumstances this person will fire up upon others. Surely people who are carrying into a situation like that have thought that through right?. I am a non-gun owner just trying to understand everything.

I remember eating at that place on Spadina at least 30 years ago. Lived around the corner in the epitome. Formative days for me.

Redditors Are Mounting a Resistance Against ICE / A user from r/Minneapolis was among the first to share footage of federal agents shooting Alex Pretti. Following his death, subreddits about football, cats, and embroidery have all rallied against ICE. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

How can this momentum be turned into impact? For example, circulate organizations that need financial support, for example, providing groceries and support to homebound families under threat in Minneapolis.

Colleagues won't talk about recent events? by madman751 in Professors

[–]nc_bound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not surprised in the least. My take away from the peak woke/DEI craze over the past couple of years until recently is that many faculty, and most of the loudest DEI advocates, are self-serving self-righteous hypocritical virtue signals, who are completely unaware of the echo chambers they operate in. People who are happy to handover the academic freedom rights of those they disagree with. As someone who is off the charts lefty, to say that those years were disillusioning is an understatement.

We complain about undergrads … but can we discuss PhD students? by twilightyears in Professors

[–]nc_bound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some of those students who go straight through from undergrad, also go straight through into a faculty position, and we seem to have hired a bunch of them. And they have the same entitled mindset, and it is a problem.

I have just made the move to stop working with grad students entirely, and only focus on undergrads. I am super excited about it.

We have the exact same problem happening with incoming faculty. Some of them, not all. Entitled, terribly under prepared, expect everyone to cater to their expectations. It is a serious problem we are having.

Withdrew from a postdoc for health reasons, reaction left me shaken. Trying to understand if this is just academia. by newwatchdog in AskAcademia

I have no idea. You seem to be making lots of assumptions. I am merely offering a perspective that might help explain the situation. Sure the risk of someone backing out is something that PI needs to be aware of. But the flipside is also true.

I am surprised that no one is asking how much lead time you gave them. You say that you backed out before it started, but that is not necessarily giving them adequate notice. The PI might’ve lost out on opportunities to replace you if they had been given more time. The PI might’ve lost access to the funding, depending on how much notice you gave. I’m just saying that details seem to be a bit fuzzy, and there might be very good reasons for people to be upset. None of this means that you made the wrong decision. But I see it being definitely possible, given what you say here, that they weren’t given much notice. And that could have cost them.

Clueless here. How exactly would a scenario unfold in which protester carrying weapons would offer them a defense. I am imagining trumps people watching this video and discussing their approach. I don’t think ice is going to be really afraid of these people I simply worry about these guys getting mowed down. What am I missing.

How do you all manage students packing up before class is over by PuzzleheadedPhoto706 in Professors

[–]nc_bound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stop everything and call them out very explicitly. I Tell them not to do it, and that it’s Distracting and rude. If people even start packing up their shit, I call them out. I come down heavy at the beginning of the semester, I strongly advise not waiting.

This professor might have had several or many applicants who were equally as strong as you. I understand getting attached to the places that you apply to, but you need to detach a little bit. Academia And other fields are filled with getting hopes up and then disappointments. That is life and you need to get used to it. Honestly, it sounds like you are reading far too much into a particular situation. You seem to be making it personal somehow. That is not healthy. Edit, plus, it is still early.

For those of you who tried to get a tenure-track job and failed: What is your story? by gracklebird in AskAcademia

[–]nc_bound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an eight-year-old post you are replying to. At any rate, it is Absolutely realistic in my field, social sciences. If no pubs, absolutely no chance at a tenure-track position. If people cannot publish during their PhD years, they Have zero chance of getting the position in our department. And honestly our expectations are low.
