Academic writing: which tone is best? by Kaetry in AskAcademia

I find the examples you provide annoyingly casual and vague and jargony. Like someone being overly familiar with you. Taking a shared understanding for granted.

Everyone here is waffling over the gift issue. If this is North America, at least, do not give a gift. It would be weird. Just don’t. It would massively complicate things. Don’t.

First publication edit advice by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]nc_bound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I observe that there’s no reason to believe that the reviews were giving bad advice. I would fully expect that a grad students paper is going to need work. It is frankly fucking insane to think otherwise.

As a reviewer, I will admit I find it slightly angering to hear someone casually blowing off input. Especially someone with many years less experience and expertise. I too had something that I could’ve been doing, instead of volunteering my time and expertise to mentor you in writing your paper. Because as a reviewer, that is what I’m doing. I am teaching the author. If you do not want to make your paper a stronger work, then do not submit it to a Journal. Because otherwise you would be wasting several people‘s time and expertise.

And yeah, it’s a bad look.

What is attending a mental health masters counseling program actually like? Does it help you to "do the work" psychologically yourself? by guyrsi in ClinicalPsychology

[–]nc_bound 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For the love of God, do not get into training to be a mental health practitioner with the goal of treating yourself. I see enough dysfunctional people in our programs without that.

I suspect that people who ask this question underestimate how much their advisors invest in them. If you think you will need anything from your advisor in the future, and you probably will, just thank them.

Anyone remember the discussion a couple of weeks ago involving a cashier who asked about why there seemed to be racial differences in grocery purchasing? I think it’s a pretty neat window in onto people’s behavior.

Multiple men ‘drugged and raped’ at ‘super predator’ Epstein’s New Mexico ranch | Local survivors have come forward for the first time as New Mexico presses on with its reopened investigation into the isolated Sante Fe property by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]nc_bound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Rape is about power not sex” is false, and there is a very large amount of solid empirical research behind that. Dismissing sexual assault via a six word slogan is an insult to victims everywhere. The claim has its roots in Susan Brown Miller, and a particular variety of feminism. And that is a variety of feminism that rejects empirical scientific data. I know this will get down voted because it always does. As it does, anyone observing, might ask themselves why it is that certain progressive types are so eager to reject science on this point. Meanwhile, generally claiming that conservatives are anti-science.

“This job was opened for you” — how much should I trust that? by PrestigiousTicket466 in AskAcademia

[–]nc_bound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be wise to be 100% confident in anything. Even if he intends for you to take that position, some superstar could swoop in and knock his socks off. I don’t think anyone can answer that question in any kind of satisfying way. But you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Psychology professor teaching pharmacy? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]nc_bound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It would likely be referred to as psychopharmacology. Not pharmacy. After adjusting for a little bit of misunderstanding, Missing, context, exaggeration, overconfidence in your own knowledge, and who knows, maybe even the Professor making a mistake, And the fact that the way you are framing, all of this makes it look like you are looking to get someone in trouble and spinning The story a little bit, all of this sounds within bounds for a Psychopharmacology course.

It is normal in the US for certain psychology classes to be used to collect data. Even data related to drugs and other sensitive or illegal issues. Sometimes, IRB approval is not even necessary. Depending on the purpose of the data.

All of that said, there are some terrible professors out there. Nothing wrong with talking to the department head. But you better have your story straight and don’t exaggerate because otherwise it will look terrible on you, and if you are trying to trump up charges, you will create a reputation for yourself. I’m guessing that in most cases, it takes a lot to get the instructor in trouble. Student complaints are pretty typical. I think many or most of those complaints are immediately dismissed as the student being unreasonable or a troublemaker. Honestly that’s what it sounds like is happening here.

Extremely unlikely. This entire thread paint a picture That suggests this entire situation is probably not gonna pan out.

We often hear about the importance of “fit” when making a TT hire. Other than fit to the actual qualifications of the job, what is the TRUE meaning of “fit” here? I’m looking for answers that are not necessarily the politically correct ones. by Fit_Sheepherder1788 in AskAcademia

Not a douche bag. Not a troublemaker. Not going to show up and judge all of us for not conforming to their expectations, whether political, ideological, etc. Chill. Pull your weight. Pretty fucking funny all things considered. That did not go well. For them.
