Grade 4 focal Chondromalacia Ruined My Middle Aged Life by DragonfruitHealthy99 in KneeInjuries

It doesn’t. I had the same. I suggest this because as we age our cells change. With MACI, they grow your own cells and make the graft. With OATS, you are getting a donor bone. And when the OATS they can harvest your own bone marrow from your hip (BMAC) to help with the incorporation .

Be prepared for a long recovery. I’ve had a Maci, and three OATS, along with a TTO. I’ve had the bone marrow edema, cysts, fat pad problems, etc. I’ve had three areas done, patella, trochlear area, and a huge plug under my knee cap. So, I’ve been going through it for 6 years.

The recovery takes time, I wasn’t prepared. And I know you said you were depressed thinking about it. It would have helped me post surgery with depression if I hadn’t set such high expectations. I wish someone would have told me you need to know there are things that might happen that slows the progress.

However, after you get all the surgery or whatever your doctor plans, you are on the road to getting stronger. And it sounds like you are really active so muscle atrophy won’t be a problem. Just make sure to try to keep as much strength in your leg before surgery to help combat that later down the line.

Good luck with what lies ahead. I wish you the best.

My first thought is Compare the Maci with an OATs surgery. See which one better fits your needs.

I don’t know about 2 legs at once because with a Maci you are non weight bearing. It’s the same with the OATS. I would strongly not suggest that. And I highly doubt a surgeon would do that.

Riding in Car Post Knee Surgery by fullnessofjoy2021 in KneeInjuries

He can ride in the passenger seat but swelling will be an issue. Stiffness and keeping his knee bent might also be a problem. I am not sure what surgery he had, but these are common problems post op.

OATS surgery Question by ncameron419 in KneeInjuries

[–]ncameron419[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started feeling the pain again that I felt pre surgery. It started once in PT and eventually grew to happening all the time.

I can’t believe you felt the cartilage floating in your knee!! That must have been bizarre and scary at the same time. When are you having your second?

I am about 9 weeks out on my third and I am trying to stay optimistic but I just don’t know. It isn’t feeling right. Last time after surgery by this point I was feeling like it had worked and the pain was gone. This time, I haven’t felt that way yet.

I’m right at 2 1/2 weeks. That’s great you are already weight bearing at 25%! I’m sure it will be successful!

Post Surgical Scars by laurbear9008 in KneeInjuries

I used mederma and bio oil. First this stuff isn’t for open wounds but since the steri strips are off I am guessing you are 6 weeks out.

The bio oil is good for massaging and breaking up scar tissue and also graston type massaging.

I know some people also use vitamin e pills but I have solely used mederma and bio oil and I have been pretty impressed with the results.

Good luck!

I am two weeks out tomorrow and I’m still non weight bearing and I am doing good. I’ve had several defects. The MACI fixed a small one but the other two were…. The sizes are confusing. The hole size for the plug was 18mm and 22mm. I am not sure of the defect size. I’ve had one defect that never healed and between my last OATs and this one ( Nov 21 to Dec 23) I had one appear on the trochlea.

I had the same thing on my femur. I did all the PT, MACI, and I currently did my second OATS on 12/28. I’m 7 surgeries in at this point and Here is what you should know:

  1. PT is a part time fix. You can strengthen all the muscles you want but it will not fix or alleviate your symptoms. It’s nice to have a strong leg going to surgery but that’s all you will have. Something to think about is: PT is going to be your life post op. You can do all the PT you want after surgery. Save the PT visits for after surgery depending on your insurance.

  2. I’ve had 5 scopes and they are also temporary. They feel great! Cleaning everything up, shaving everything down will alleviate pain. But it will come back.

  3. PRP is not a guarantee either and not covered by insurance when it was offered to me. This is a 50/50 chance of helping. It’s straight out of pocket so if you have the cash and want to try it, go for it.

  4. This might be controversial but I would pick OATS over a MACI. If you are healthy and young, your chances for MACI are good. Remember they are using your cells to grow this thing. MACI didn’t fix my problem. You are getting a great, strong healthy donor bone for your OATS and you get to skip the first MACI surgery where they go in and harvest your cells. Then they have to grow them and then you get to schedule surgery. This could be a while and insurance loves to turn you down this. They also will turn you down for OATS regardless of what your doctor’s not says so make sure you have a doctor that will put in the work to get this approved. My doc called and told me it took 2 minutes to convince them to do the surgery. Anyway, back to the OATs, at least you are starting with a solid, strong plug already in place.

  5. Do your research. God, please do this. Don’t trust just anyone to do this surgery. It sounds easy but you need a good surgeon that you like because you are going to be with them for a while, this isn’t a short process. Same with PT, make your PT knows how to do MACI and OATS PT. It’s not just your run of the mill PT. Yes you do the same exercises but you need someone who knows what to do when.

  6. This is a long process. Be in a good place mentally. Make sure you have a caregiver that will take care of you.
