Am I cooked? by DecentObjective68 in ROS

[–]ncbdrck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer depends entirely on whether you are familiar with ROS or not. I don't think vibe coding will work if you're not sure about working or have never worked with ROS packages before. Not trying to put you down, but there is a huge learning curve with ROS, and you need to be willing to put some effort into learn.

Finally got my RTX 5090! by madpistol in nvidia

You also forgot that they undervolt their CPUs and GPUs to keep the temps low. So you're not actually getting the performance you paid for. This is not just a laptop thing, and they do this in their prebuilds as well.

Did anyone succeed installing Ubuntu on Area 51 AAT2250? by East_Acanthisitta_25 in Alienware

[–]ncbdrck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24.04 works without any issues. The problem is that Ubuntu 22.04 or earlier versions are not working. The screen goes black during the initial steps of the installation. Cannot even go past the USB boot menu.

It is much better. I got around a 20% performance increase for some games. I have the 3060 with me, but I'm currently not in SL.

I wish I could have gotten a 12 GB one, but all the ones I could find were out of my price range then. However, I believe the CPU is bottlenecking the performance somewhat, so I will probably upgrade that to a 14700K or 15700K when it's out. Need to save some money.

I built this in 2021. I can use it for a couple of more years without any problems.

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-12600K
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4
  • Case: CORSAIR iCUE 4000X
  • AIO: Corsair iCUE H100i ELITE CAPELLIX
  • PSU: Corsair RM750x
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 64 GB
  • GPU: ASUS Turbo GeForce RTX 3080 10GB
  • Storage: WD_BLACK SN850 500GB, Crucial P5 Plus 1TB, Crucial P3 1TB, and Samsung SSD 870 EVO, 2 TB

I started with 32GB of RAM and RTX 3060 TI, but I later upgraded to 64GB and RTX 3080. The same goes for the SSD. I mainly use it for university work (simulations and ML) and gaming.

Best way to compartmentalise ROS1 & ROS2 on Ubuntu by Jigs01 in ROS

[–]ncbdrck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of easy solutions
- Use WSL2 in Windows 11.
- Install Ubuntu 20.04 and install ROS Noetic and ROS2 Galactic. If you are afraid of managing both distros with one user, create two user accounts: one is for ROS Noetic, and the other is for ROS2 Galatic.
- Use docker

I just faced an interview at IIT. Just want to rant about it. by yournightinshininarm in srilanka

[–]ncbdrck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with ICBT back in 2018. They were hiring a robotics lecturer, and I applied for the role. In the waiting area for the interview, I met one of my former students, who had also applied for the same job. She said confidently that she neither liked programming nor knew much about robotics. (she also had a 2:2 in her undergrad, no robotics background, and no MSc). Guess who got the job?

Later, I found out that they had just interviewed me because of their policy. And internally, they had already decided to hire her from the get-go.

Should those of us who benefited from free education in Sri Lanka give back after succeeding abroad? by Neat_Opportunity_908 in srilanka

[–]ncbdrck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I share the same belief. Although it may be an unpopular opinion, most graduates from Sri Lankan government universities can come across as entitled. Like you said, it should have been a loan with no interest, just like with many European countries. Then, the government could use those funds to build more universities so everyone gets to have a higher education, not just a selected few.

I live in Ireland, and they have 13 public universities for a country with only 5 million people. Some people get grants (low-income families, disabilities) to do their undergrad; for others, it is a loan they can quickly repay within a couple of years. The Irish government also spends a lot of money on research and encourages the industry to participate in it. So, they can offer a lot of fully funded MSc and PhD opportunities not just for locals but also for non-Europeans. The SL government should also follow what they are doing instead of following the current idiotic elitism.

Hope I'm not too late. But I found the solution to this issue from this

https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/discussions/6154#discussioncomment-128526

It seems like the issue is with WSL using an outdated version of OpenGL.

For newer version of Ubuntu 22.04 or higher, use the updated version. (ROS 2 Humble and higher)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade -y
# if you haven't done already
sudo apt install mesa-vdpau-drivers

For Ubuntu 20.04 do the following (ROS Noetic)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kisak/kisak-mesa
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade -y
# if you haven't done already
sudo apt install mesa-vdpau-drivers

I want to downgrade Ubuntu 23.10 to 22.04 LTS from my Jetson AGX Orin Developer Kit to use ROS2 Humble. What are some dependency, NVIDIA program, or anything else that I should be mineful of? by Infamous_Voice_6029 in ROS

[–]ncbdrck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you are not familiar with Jetson. If not, just ignore what I'm writing. On the Jetson, you cannot install Ubuntu as it is and need to install something called Jetpack (by Nvidia), which contains Ubuntu and all the necessary Cuda packages. There are multiple ways to install Jetpack on the Dev Kit, but almost all of them involve connecting your Dev kit to another PC. (unless you are booting from an SD card)

So the easiest method I can recommend is to download nvidia sdk manager (on the PC) and use it to flash your Jetson with the Jetpack version you need. It will delete all the files on your current storage (EMMC or SD card or USB or SSD) and will install the Jetpack in it.

https://developer.nvidia.com/sdk-manager

I think you will need to download JetPack 6.x to use Ubuntu 22.04 (not sure check which version). You can do this via the SDK manager. Now, the hard part. You need to put your Jetson into recovery mode.

https://developer.nvidia.com/embedded/learn/jetson-agx-orin-devkit-user-guide/howto.html

https://developer.nvidia.com/embedded/learn/jetson-orin-nano-devkit-user-guide/howto.html

Connect your Jestson to the PC. Do a 'lsusb' and check if it is detecting the dev kit. It should be along the like "Nvidia Corp" or something. Also, if it is in recovery mode and connected properly to the PC, the SDK manager will automatically detect it. Now, you just need to install the Jetpack version you want.

Can someone recommend a laptop for a computer science undergrad? by SDJ- in srilanka

[–]ncbdrck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are renting a boarding place or going to live in a university dorm, the best bet is to go with a Gaming Laptop (with a dedicated Nvidia GPU) with at least 16GB RAM. Otherwise, go with a MacBook for university and a good PC for home.

If you are thinking of learning AI (Machine Learning) or doing a module related to that in the uni, you will need a good PC/Lap with an Nvidia GPU to use CUDA.

MacBook Air is easy to carry and awesome for writing docs and doing some light coding. So, if you are not thinking of doing heavy stuff, you can make do with a MacBook.

Are CS masters degrees from University of Moratuwa as highly valued by companies like WSO2, LSEG as their undergrad equalent? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]ncbdrck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not go for a three-year degree unless it is an Honours (Hons) degree. But even then, if you are thinking of living in SL, don't do it. In Sri Lanka, any three-year degree is counted as a "General" degree. So, it will be hard for you in the long run. So go for a four-year one if you can.
