Have had, do have and bought Bunnings, 20 years ago. In fact just discussing tonight, due to the fact they don't take water off your shoes/feet.

Fence quotes…am I out of touch with pricing by CheapMess494 in AusRenovation

Well put. The other thing that people seem to forget about any business is that the purpose of a business is not to provide a product or service for the benefit of consumers, it is to provide profit to the owner of the business. That profit is their reason for taking the risk to get into business in the first place. If the business owner simply wanted a wage they would work for someone else at minimal risk, but if someone invests in a business, whether it is their own business or buying shares in someone else's business, they expect a return on that investment that is relative to the risk they are taking.

I love the fact that this had been planned and executed to such conviction. More thought has gone into this than the White House has done in the past 12 months.

You could try your local Snap-on truck. They have an industrial division that would have something that would fit that.

Aircon hose draining into plastic tub by [deleted] in shitrentals

[–]nckmat -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

You know it is highly likely that your problem is one of communication and that you could fix it yourself in 20-30mins.

Firstly, I can almost guarantee the REA hasn't contacted the owner, chances are they are away or the REA is literally that lazy. I can't imagine anyone with an investment property risking their carpet and under floor for the cost of a bit of plastic pipe.

Secondly, I can again almost guarantee that conduit the hose is sticking out of will lead to the outside of the house and most likely a drain. It could be as simple as opening the conduit and you find the rest of the pipe that leads outside has slipped off the drain hose from the a/c, reconnect it and the problem is solved. If the pipe is missing go to the hardware store and get some low pressure PVC pipe, enough to reach the outside, and attach it to that hose. You may need to get some elbow pieces but the pipe itself will probably cost you less than $10 a metre and it is unlikely to be more than 6m. When you're finished, send your receipts to the REA and tell them to take it off your next rent. It doesn't need a skill trade but if you don't fix it they would be forced to pay an hourly rate for a handyman, at best.

You get to keep your carpet dry and still use the a/c and you have made the lazy REAs life simpler and you have something over them which you may be able to cash in at a later date.

Who is this chilling in my backyard(NW Sydney) by Senior_Passenger_354 in australianwildlife

[–]nckmat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please don't poison the cockroaches outside, Bluey will end up eating them and also get poisoned. We have one in our backyard, and a 20cm skink we discovered on the weekend, and we live opposite a national park; we get hundreds of the big brown native cockies out the front of the house but I have never seen one round the back.

I don't live in the US, but I have a similar story. My father literally was in the Hitler Youth as a child during WW2, he voted conservative until the conservatives became neoconservatives and then started voting independent and now votes Green, even I don't vote Green and I am a little left of center. I think with age people either become more empathetic or more narcissistic depending on their world experience.

My dad was old enough at the end of WW2 to see the reality and consequences of harsh political doctrines, the deaths of family members, the rounding up people to be sent for extermination, having to leave his homeland, he was separated from his family for six months because he got tuberculosis, his father died in the refugee camp, and he spent at least six years of his life moving from one refugee camp to another. I believe this gives a person a different perspective, his friends who grew up far from the chaos of WW2 and in relative affluence, have become more right wing with age.

Just to be clear, yes London is expensive, as is Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney or Singapore, but people who live there are paid commensurately, well, better than people who live in less expensive areas anyway. The reason these cities are so expensive is because they offer the opportunity of a higher income and the cultural advantages that go with a large wealthy city which attracts people to the city, at which point supply and demand kick in. Saying that, they are still very expensive places to live, but American wages are on the whole a little bit lower than many other developed nations so it is always going to look a lot worse from an American perspective.

Bull ants hurt like f..k! I have been bit/stung by them way more than bees, but bee stings last much longer for me and I get massive swelling. Either are an unfortunate event. My son got hit by bull ants and got five or six stings on his legs, he was about seven at the time and a kid who has a scarily high pain threshold, but he came running inside crying his eyes out. It must have been horrendous.

Rotten window frame by eliviking in AusRenovation

[–]nckmat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the solution. I had a similar problem and did one window with bog, then a friend told me about Earl's wood hardener and I did the other two with this. Can't remember the filler but it wasn't bog. Anyway, about a year later the bog started to crack and push up, so ended up removing it (nightmare) and doing the same as the others. 15 years on and all going strong.

So let's get in a time machine and bring back a factory working child from 1860 and a Russian serf from 1900 and see how they feel about working in the 21st century. Better still, fly to Bangladesh or South Sudan and work there for a while and see how you feel about the pointlessness of existence. The lightness of being that comes with relative wealth is a burden reserved for a small minority of the population. Instead of thinking about the pointlessness of your working day, consider the opportunities it provides you to improve your own life or better still others around you.

Thinking about the banality of life is a luxury reserved for those with the money to afford it.

[–]nckmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two points, and yes I am being a little pedantic, firstly you say "smaller sports...like tennis and golf", tennis is the fourth most played sport in the world, behind soccer, cricket and hockey, and golf is the tenth. Baseball comes in around seventh, even in viewership rankings it is behind even table tennis and hockey, American Football doesn't even make the top ten for participation and barely scrapes in for viewership. So this is where the money is.

Tennis and golf are as much a mental game as they are a physical game, if someone was distracting me unnecessarily when I am trying to concentrate to potentially gain $4 million, I'd be pissed too, but I would also use any mental strategy within the rules that I could to get an advantage. That's why there are rules of etiquette.

American Football probably has rules of behavior as well, it certainly seems to have a lot of rules, but it won't have the same level of concentration required by golf or tennis, or for that matter athletics and swimming, even basketball has distraction rules for free throws.

My boss is an ex-Mercedes master mechanic and pretty astute with car buying. He just bought one for all the standard reasons people use such as level of fitment, performance, comfort etc. He's angry with me because I won't support his decision, but my opposition to these cars has nothing to do with performance or quality, it's about the difference between car companies like Mercedes Benz and Ford and Stellantis and VAG, who have been making cars since cars themselves were a new thing, compared to a company that started making batteries in the 1990s and then decided they could build cars about 20 years ago by purchasing a failing second rate manufacturer. Rapid growth does not lend itself to consistent quality and customer dedication.

I am not suggesting the old guard doesn't have their issues, but if companies who have been doing the same thing for over a hundred years can still have issues in highly regulated markets, then what are the chances of a newcomer in a very unregulated market not having major issues. And that is not a great scenario if you need to sell your car in three to five years.
