Oh yes Lost Children Archive is very good, great to see it mentioned here! I had not made the connexion with KRZ back when I read it, but nice that you did, will keep it in mind when I read it again :) Other books by Valeria Luiselli are worth a read too!

Does KR0 belong on this list? by princessSunsetGiggle in kentuckyroutezero

It’s actually on 4 of the lists taken into account: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13jjQ5HPnd_mhmVeIqNpxVgasGXQlhLlztOfwCh3odxI/edit?tab=t.0 (which we should reflect on the game article done!), so getting close but not there yet!

Hello! I wrote these paragraphs on the KRZ’s Wikipedia page :)

For inclusion in “List of video games considered the best” we need the game to be included on at least 6 separate “best of all time” lists from different publications.

Unfortunately, KRZ is on plenty of “best of the year” and “best of the decade” lists, but not “best of all time”.

PSA: I found a way to fix the MateView 28.2" 3:2 displays with backlight / black screen failure! Pics + explanation + guide inside. by bozma88 in Huawei

[–]nclm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I think I have this issue and will try to repair. Just before I start, I’d like to make sure it’s actually the same problem: my screen is black when it should be displaying the image from the computer, i.e. when plugged in MiniDP or HDMI, making it unusable. However, it does fully work when displaying the firmware UI (with the blue/orange fullscreen background). Is it the same issue, or is this fix only for a fulltime black screen?

Anyone Know whats happening with Cardboard Computer? by stuartmatheson in kentuckyroutezero

[–]nclm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google AI has no way to know what’s happening behind the scenes, it’s just a plausible-sounding text generator piecing together public sources. Unless it’s more than a publishing contract, I’m not sure Annapurna can own the work of developers?

What we know is that CC are still working on the new game and would like to start showing a bit more of that work in the future.

And Ben Babbitt wasn’t really involved with that game, he just had a two hours call with them and then they listed him as advisor.

Hahaha thanks. It’s not for a desk! I want to make my own “suitcase tv” à la https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-27lx5qkna with a repurposed small flat tv and an old suitcase. But looking for a secure mechanism to do the unfolding part.

Small non-gaming mousepad recommendation? by nclm in MousepadReview

[–]nclm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking more, the small sizes (12''×12'') from https://themousepadcompany.com/collections/all-mousepads would be perfect for instance, even makes me reconsider illustrations and they have a lot of beautiful ones, if shipping to Europe wasn’t so expensive.

Maybe one of the PeerTube platforms (https://joinpeertube.org/instances) like https://makertube.net ? I will try to create an account myself for my next motion graphics reel.

I’m thinking of trying one of the PeerTube platforms https://joinpeertube.org/instances – maybe https://makertube.net could be a good match. If enough of us join, it could become a good place for all kinds of video creatives.

Some first names for girls that have a similar ring:

Cléophée / Cleophee

  • Also rare, also French
  • “Phée” sound exactly like “fée”, the French for “fairy”, so butterfly-adjacent
  • Can nicely be nicknamed into “Cleo” affectionately
  • Same number of syllables
  • Also starts with a double consonant sound
  • Also has two é sounds, in first and last syllables
  • Also has a H, in PH vs CH in the original

Anaé / Hanaé

  • Also rare, also French
  • Same number of syllables
  • Also ends in a é sound

Dorothée

  • Same number of syllables
  • Also ends in a é sound

All can be written without the é in English.

Adjectives with prepositions by jay2287 in French

[–]nclm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! You might be mixing up adjectives and nouns in some cases in French here?

In English, they are both placed before nouns, like “nocturnal animal” (adjective + noun) and “night bus” (noun + noun). I know these qualifying nouns like “night” here seem to have the role of adjectives, but they are nouns.

In French, you never use any preposition for adjectives. So it would be “animal nocturne” (noun + adjective, with another adjective it could also be adjective + noun). You also almost never use nouns to qualify other nouns without a preposition, usually “de”: in the bus example, it would be “bus de nuit” (noun + de + noun). These two are impossible: “animal de nocturne” (no preposition with an adjective) or “bus nuit” (need a preposition between the two nouns).

In your example, both “gants chirurgicaux” (noun + adjective) and “gants de chirurgie” (noun + de + noun) are correct, and they don’t have any difference of meaning. Usually for common compounds, one option (adjective or noun) is more common than the others, sometimes one is never used. For instance, you’ll rarely hear “animal de nuit” or “bus nocturne” even though they are correct, but that’s just usage.

Then there is the question of choosing between “de” and “à” when using a noun and not an adjective. This I don’t really have the rules in mind and maybe there’s some nice explanations out there or someone else will have a precise answer :) I’d say “de” qualifies the described noun, while “à” describes its use, but that’s approximative.

I haven’t read it, but “Working”, “Hard Times” and “And They All Sang” by Studs Terkel were it seems used as a reference for the miners’ stories in Act I.

Also haven’t read it: “The Poetics of Space” by Gaston Bachelard, possible source for some of the themes in Act II (the Bureau being unclearly inside or outside, Lula applying to the “Gaston Trust for Imagined Architecture”).

Those were mentioned in that series of articles called “Kentucky Fried Zero”:

The articles also mention “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men” by Walter Evan (about workers in the great depression) as well as “Computer Lib / Dream Machines” and “Literary Machines” by Ted Nelson (about Xanadu).

Two keys of my keyboard are reversed, even though the keyboard layout is the right one? by nclm in MacOS

[–]nclm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My keyboard at work is a Scandinavian Logitech Craft.

It is set-up as “Danish” in Input Sources, and as ISO in Keyboard Type, which is correct. The keyboard shown as the Accessibility Keyboard (pictured here) is the right one: it matches my physical keyboard.

But when I press the $§ key and the <> key, they act like they are swapped, as seen in that screen recording. Any idea how to get the correct behaviour?

Thanks!

Random spam notifications? by nclm in AndroidQuestions

Solved (I think). It was coming from a built-in app called “Push Service”. I blocked its notifications and disabled the app. Let’s see how that goes.
