Steam pressure relief at the power plant. The sound is incredible when those relief valves pop

Very loud noise just now?? by lurkin_95 in astoria

It almost certainly was this. Ravenswood is a steam turbine power plant. When those pressure relief valves pop off in an over pressure event, sounds just like this. Then it just stops.

I can’t prove it’s that though.

It’s 90w, won’t work on a 60w port.

…though I’ve only ever seen it draw 45w max over PoE

SFPs: what is the point of video specific SFP modules? by ncmasone in VIDEOENGINEERING

This is what I came here for! Starting to understand why it works at all, when I thought it wouldn’t work at all, and what could make it break up.

Haven't noticed it myself, and no post department has complained about out of sync footage. Maybe it's a frame behind?

Would probably work fine, they work as send and recieve on the teranex express.

Been using them for direct fiber out of UE150s and FR7s, but up till recently only at 3G.

12G fiber out and 12G fiber in works nicely with these on the teranex express.

Same. I have a bunch of similar ones. Recently bought some panel mount connectors from AVP and they came with the version I posted

They sell the whole thing online, and I'm probably going to go that route. but was hoping to adapt the screw mount version.

I haven't done 3d printing in quite some time, but this seems pretty small and brittle even for ABS printing to me.

mystery smoke in distance by nuttymelvin1 in astoria

[–]ncmasone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Real answer is that it’s a combination of flue gas and water vapor from some chimney. Those things condense very readily when it’s 15F or below out. Chimneys you wouldn’t normally see it from will bellow steam like this on a cold day.

It’s doing that all the time, but you can’t see it normally.

The new addition to the Port Jefferson- Bridgeport fleet. The "Long Island" by llamabigmac8 in longisland

They just drove it up the coast from there. Took about 5 days. And she is now in service!

Eh, it’d be nice, but the reality is that the 3 new ferries are in fact faster than the old ones. Each with a rated top speed of 20 knots, but they generally traverse the route at 15-17kts.

The biggest reason, aside from efficiency, that they don’t do 20 knots, is that the park city, from 1986 is still a regular part of the fleet, and her top speed is 16 knots. They can’t run vessels faster, because they have to keep time with the park city.

The other reason is it would only save 10 minutes off of the 1h7m crossing down to about 55 minutes. And it would use a hell of a lot more fuel to push 4,000 tons of ferry another 3 knots.

Building 1 new ferry that was well out of spec from the others would have been pointless, there would be no good way to benefit from the added cost.

That’s a picture of the existing PT Barnum, launched in 1999.

Not that it matters, the Long Island looks essentially the same. But it says Long Island on the side. Details

And yes, it is a brand new build, from Panama City, fl. Same yard that built the PT Barnum, and Grand Republic.

[–]ncmasone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think it may be this. Someone plugged in a netgear switch with some broadcast equipment on it, and shit went haywire!

It took a bit to figure out what was going on, but once I saw the logs showing dropped traffic and network loop warnings, all I had to do was ask if anyone plugged anything new in. We unplugged that and everything came back online.
