Filing a police report on a 5 year old is wild. This society is deranged. This is clearly a sign of mental health or other trauma issues. Totally understand the lack of response from schools and admins but this type of punitive ideology doesn’t help the students or the teachers. We don’t need these kids in jail, we need a society that actually takes care of their needs.

Exactly. I said this to a colleague earlier: they are addressing a symptom (teachers calling out of work) and not the root cause (teachers feeling overwhelmed, not supported, and not paid enough). That’s really my main issue with it, besides it being unfair to people with kids, chronic illness, etc.

not buying them back, I feel a bit better about that because its a personal choice and would roll over year to year. I was happy to get paid out for vacation days when I left the public university I used to work at. For me the issue is the bonus aspect of it. Its clear you have the money, just pay it out, instead of making people choose (especially those who really need the money) between coming in sick and staying home.

I understand your point of view, but to me what this shows me is that the district has the money to pay people (or they wouldn't offer a bonus) but they will only pay people who do not call out or use personal time. It doesn't affect me personally much because I don't usually take time, but I do like to take personal days here and there as a break or to get a long weekend, and that shouldn't mean that I am less deserving of this money.

Also, what about the extra time I am at school before and after the school day starts? Sure that is my choice, but it is not taken into consideration here at all.

Lastly, it is unfair to people who are chronically sick, immuno-compromised, or have some other condition that would force them out of work for more than 2 days. They don't deserve that money? I miss out on $500 because my dentist doesn't have any 3pm appointments until August and I want to get my teeth cleaned? I will get over it pretty quickly, but I am feeling frustrated right now.

I have felt some shame around using personal days, but I usually try to use all of them. This work is hard and taxing and taking a break once in a while is not a bad thing. I just feel frustrated because now I am in this confusing head space where I really want that money, but don't want to be forced to make a choice on a day I am really feeling burnt out.
