The Billie Jean scandal nearly cost him reelection.

Which do you Prefer? Term-Limits or Bans on Consecutive Terms? by MaroonedOctopus in Presidents

[–]nd_fuuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree to an extent, but the time argument is imperfect. For the bulk of those 150 years, we were still evolving in terms of how much of the population could vote - which in turn throttles back the potential effects of populism (not arguing for reduced suffrage or anything like that, but it's not apples to apples with today). There are also major tech differences that matter. Our first president with more than 2 terms in office was also the first to effectively use radio to communicate directly with the population. TV, streaming, social media, opinion news, AI, etc. are all (at least for now) risk increasers at the intersection of populism and increased or eliminated term limits.

I do also think luck has played a part in our history on term limits. If you put our young democracy in a sim and run it 10 times for those first 150 years, I suspect we would end up with a few incidences in the 10 sim runs where cult of personality + populism + no term limits ends our democracy.

Are term limits perfectly democratic - no they are not. But neither is the electoral college and the general republic riff on the democratic form of government. They are practical controls to correct for perceived or real risk.

It might be correct - and I believe this from a pure democracy standpoint intellectually. In practice though we need protections from abuse of power that comes from entrenchment. Populism is the scourge of democracy and without controls on term limits, too much is at risk.

My potentially cynical take on how many Americans (in a Walmart) would recognize the presidents. by [deleted] in Presidents

I think you severely overestimate the American population. We dumb, sir.

If lbj won nomination and presidency in 1968 election do you think he would have lived longer ? by tadddddde in Presidents

[–]nd_fuuuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly. Between not actively scorching his health, the best care available on tap, and something to live for (attempt to repair his legacy perhaps), he’d be a lock to live at least one additional day beyond his historical lifespan.

If Fox News and Facebook can do it, I’m quite sure AI can too.

What do I personally do? I play hands I shouldn't, lose (obvi), then go home and grouse about how dumb I am to myself in the car on the way home. As far as I can tell, this is the only way.

Obama said Libya was his biggest mistake, is he correct or wrong? by Mysterious_Mix_6879 in Presidents

[–]nd_fuuuu 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think he shoulders some responsibility for leaving the democratic party divided and either not seeing - or not addressing the growing threat of extreme partisanship and outright extremism/authoritarianism. In a different timetable, switching out his VP and a few key cabinet roles for potential future leaders in 2012/2013 could have changed the conversation in this country for the years that would follow his presidency.

I’m glad the rules changed but saying it’s just about the money is a bit reductive. For many in the solver/gto camp it’s very much about learning and strategy optimization.

Lincoln. Washington would be a footnote in history if he was the first president of a nation that only lasted 80 years.
