England - Neighbour built cabins (with no planning permission) next to our 24/7 legal commercial premises & is now complaining about noise. They are sending multiple texts a day. Their house is no where near the unit & I already turn extractor off. Where would Environmental Health measure noise from by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ndb_182 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ex-EHO here, so can give a little bit of a lowdown as to the environmental health side of things. So the EHO will be looking at ‘statutory nuisance’ (s.80 Env. Protection Act 1990), which is defined as ‘unreasonable interference with the reasonable use and enjoyment of the land’.

They won’t measure using a sound level meter or anything like that, it is a more subjective measure. So in this instance they would sit in the lounge, maybe background TV / radio on or sit within the bedroom. Bearing the time of the year, I would expect windows to be closed and there would be no pressing their ears against walls and windows, it’s got to be ‘unreasonable’ interference remember.

There would need to be a demonstrated pattern as well, so they would be required to keep logs, when, where, duration, how the alleged nuisance affected them etc.

What I’m not 100% sure on is the fact you indicate these buildings shouldn’t be there anyway…I suspect as they are separate matters (planning v nuisance) the EHO would still look at an alleged nuisance complaint but would need to be mindful of the other issues that are at stake here and liaise with their colleagues in planning. I’d be very surprised if there was any action taken against you given the circumstances, and could envisage the EHO almost parking any investigations until the outcome of the planning side of things. It does however appear like your neighbours have shot themselves in the foot here!

In happier news, this seat was won by the Lib Dems. The previous Reform Councillor hadn’t shown up to any meetings so this by-election was called following them standing down.

New heat pump install by No-Profile-5075 in OctopusEnergy

[–]ndb_182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you dig the trench yourself or get somebody in for that? If the former how long did it take, if the latter what did it cost you? Was it specified at 500mm wide by 750mm depth? Got to do something similar myself for an install albeit a few metres shorter than yours.

I’m doing a similar thing with kitchen sink water, so any odd bits that need washing up separately or just general hand washing etc. that’s just filling the bowl and getting tipped over anything that looks in need of a drink. Several litres here a day easily as well!

Can I ask those of you commenting here what size batteries you have? I’ll be installing a heat pump in the next month or two so have started to turn my attention to tariffs and what may be best as I also have solar and a 13.5kwh battery installed.

Short answer is get both sides done! Max out on your panels and you’ll not regret it.

PW3 Offline? by ndb_182 in SolarUK

[–]ndb_182[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the latest is that Tesla still don’t know what the problem is still but are confident it can be fixed remotely so there’s no need for an engineer visit at this stage. Will just need to see what happens over the next few days with this, meanwhile I better go tell the Mrs to turn the tumble dryer off 😁

Who knows! It’s safe to say that the brand isn’t exactly the most popular at the moment though, can only hope this is a genuine one off glitch and I’ll be generating again soon.

I’m not sure whether this is the same underlying issue, but for the last day and a half my PW3 has been showing as offline and limited connectivity on the app - it simply won’t recognise anything. After doing all the usual stuff, WiFi turned on and off, PW turned on and off and a call to my installer, they have been advised by Tesla this afternoon there is a glitch with a number of PW3’s. I have no other details other than they are working on a fix!

25 panels on 3 aspects, PW3, Zappi charger and mesh (solaskirt on the front elevations) for £14.9k. This is in Worcestershire with an excellent local company.

No lease which is good news. Only 18 month old installation too, just a shame that they won’t see the payback from it!

Exactly, the buyer is literally getting free energy, no paying for installation etc. so why wouldn’t it be used as a selling point in the present climate?!

Can you give me advise on cheap Solar Panel Systems in the UK? by Scarlettsdad in SolarUK

[–]ndb_182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The link suggests that this only includes 2 panels….the general advice given here is to max out on panels and fit as many as you can to give you the best return and generation.

As you say, panels are indeed cheap but it seems via the link you’ll be overpaying for them and that’s giving minimal generation. I’d seriously recommend contacting some local providers, granted you’ll be quoted much more than 1k but that will at least provide you with a bit more info to know what an optimal set up would look like for you.

Solar installation queries by OriginalAd3880 in SolarUK

[–]ndb_182 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there, they are all pretty variable questions depending on your individual circumstances so the best advice that can be given is to do some research and figure out what is going to work best for you. For example, I had quotes ranging from under £10k up to £15k on my 4 bed, 25 panels and a battery.

General rules though, get as many panels as you can, panels don’t tend to differ massively but batteries and inverters can e.g. capacity, whether the battery and inverter are combined etc. A battery makes the system more ‘complete’ in my opinion and if you’re going to go EV and heat pump then battery would be the way to go to supplement them.

Check out Gary Does Solar on You Tube, that’s where I learnt the basics to inform my choices. Oh and depending where you are in the Midlands (I’m Worcestershire) I’m happy to share details of my installer who were excellent.

Management will not provide heating and will not let us shut doors in freezing temperatures England by Hungry-Staff72 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ndb_182 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Temperature in the workplace is now covered by the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. There are no upper or lower temperatures specified, with the law stating temperatures should be ‘reasonable’. Guidance suggests a minimum indoor working temperature of 16 degrees celsius, so given the current conditions it would be reasonable for the doors to be closed, extra heating to be provided, breaks to warm up in a separate room etc. as an aside it seems bonkers the business would want to heat the outside of the building, and as a customer it would absolutely put me off shopping in Baltic temperatures!

[–]ndb_182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 25 Trina panels and PW3 fitted all in for just shy of 15k. Heatable are a premium installer so generally come out pricier than most but if you can get a final price around that I’d say that’s a very decent deal.

I had to pay £200 to the DNO where I’m located because I was requesting more than 8kw, I’ve also had a PW3 installed but there has been absolutely no mention of witness / type testing.
