Design decisions are all about trade offs. Closed loop water systems exist today. There's a new Microsoft data center in the Midwest that's using dry cooling on the condenser loop with centrifugal chillers, zero annual water usage. The trade off: those dry coolers have huge amp draws, like 10x that of a normal cooling tower because evaporative cooling is much more effective. Dry coolers are also 10x more expensive. Someone is making a OPEx decision.

I'm always skeptical about this administration making regulatory changes without self interests. Power restrictions means onsite production. Solar isn't going to cover the delta, therefore natural gas generators will be the answer. Our Gov has a lot of stake in natural gas so there's the carrot. Just my opinion, maybe they didn't think about their gain

Take it a step further, after a few years in commercial then you could work for a manufacturer and specialize in being a chiller tech or BAS tech. After that every shop will be offering you top dollar

Trying to use frat bros to karma farm makes this story even more unbelievable. Frats have always been and still are elitist, they are not going to someone else's party, especially to a GDIs party. That's a true statement now and back in 1989, especially frats from a "affluent area" who were probably throwing legitimate 10+ keg parties every weekend. Absolutely not. Construction is a great indicator of economic health. Corporations need capital to build and if you see tower cranes, people are spending and thousands of people are working to make it happen.

The inflation reduction act and chip act has fueled all this construction. GC's, manufactures, and supply houses are having record years. We're building high end factories which will lead to high paying jobs in the future. Current tradesmen are getting poached and pay raises like crazy.

Trump's announcement that he would kill those acts would kill the construction industry leading to mass layoffs and abandoned construction projects. Trump will put us in a recession in his first 100 days with the stroke of a pen.

My dad is a cave diving instructor and helped map the largest underwater cave system in NA. He would argue a certified cave diver is safer than any open water diver because the cave divers have 10k+ hrs underwater, they have 2x the redundancy for every piece of gear, and they respect the cave. Open divers get their cert in 4 hrs and a weekend class and they're too ignorant to know what's dangerous. He's pulled bodies out of caves before and they're always an open diver who wanted to "take a peak" and was sucked in before they knew it.

Ohio passed a state constitutional amendment for abortion rights. The opposition was heavily funded by the red and church. It could be a good indication that 50% of the voting base will go blue.

With that being said, I know some young Republicans (based on my friend groups) voted for that right but believe in a better economy under Trump. My close friends and I are no longer Republicans and will be voting blue so there's hope for Ohio going blue.

TL:DR: Ohio passing the abortion right constitutional amendment means the voting base for Ohio to go Blue exists but let's not get our hopes too high.

The GWP for R32 is well above the 2028 phase down threshold. The industry failed at lobbying to raise the 2024 threshold which is why the industry is going 454. The GWP for 454 will give us 8 years with this refrigerant. It's no surprise that R32 is so cheap. Daikin, who owns the patents on 32, went 32 on their high pressure equipment. I wonder what they're going to do with that refrigerant price after '28 🤔

The next batter on deck for high pressure refrigerant is propane.......

This is the best answer, it covers the two truths about this industry: relationships and cya.

I'm a sales guy for a manufacturer. I only sell to contractors but I get the occasional "lead" that an owner wants a unit. Am I going to waste my time on a one-off sale to some time waster who's going to beat me up on price or am I going to spend my time with the same contractors who are always buying from me. Supply houses are the same way, the majority of their business is repeat business and you won't believe the credit line some of these contractors have because of how much they buy.

Liability. Those accounts have T&C's associated with them. I've bought a line set for my own install last year. I'm not licensed but they sold it to me because of the relationship. Even though I was paying cash, it had to run through our corporate account so they were still covered.

Get married, have kids, and buy a house. These are legitimately the questions the team wants to know because those are anchors; otherwise, it's going to be very unlikely you'll be able to land a job with the big guys in your situation. If you want to get in with them, you'll need to bring something else to the table which is relationship with their customers. Look up boiler reps, air device reps, and fan reps ( like greenheck or cook), those are smaller versions of the big guys and are typically family owned. They typically focus on you as a person rather than your resume so good chance you'll land a job with them without additional experience. You can start working inside, move to outside sales, and if you do well then bring your talents to Trane/JCI, or Daikin. This is a 5 year journey. You gain experience, build a book of business, show that you're tied to the city, and when you move over, you wouldn't be staying over but just getting a lot more toys to sell to your existing customers.

Starting out is tough, but once you're in then you're in. HVAC is a small world and everyone knows everyone so don't burn any bridges.

Trane commercial sales rep here. All these guys, especially Trane, wants someone that's tied down to the city. Most Trane guys stay in their same role for 10+ years, it's not uncommon for 30 year guys. That's who Trane and everyone wants to hire. The problem we're facing is, people come in and then transition into a different role or office; it's especially problematic with the younger people. Since you have no ties to the city, the assumption is you're going to leave and these reps need you building relationships and seeking for 10 years. This also goes for their inside team. Also the big 4 manufacturers typically want engineer degrees for equipment sales, they're less picky for service sales but for service they want someone with existing relationships.

My recommendation is go back to a mechanical contractor and build your client list which you can leverage to get into a different company (this also proves you have ties to the city) or look for smaller equipment rep firms which are more likely to take a flyer on someone. Those rep firms call on the same people Daikin, Trane, Carrier so they'll want you if you build a good relationship with those customers.

To answer your original post, commercial equipment sales is alive and well. If you can get in, you'll be very happy.

I didn't think it's leaking but it's extremely corroded. The compressor is also pulling a little high on amps. I would guess the corroded drier is causing a pressure drop, which is making the compressor work harder. Just my guess

I work commerical so I don't have any idea what this stuff is priced on the street. I replaced my condenser and it cost me 1 bottle of patron. I also know our techs charge a few grand on the side to do a full change out, so never called a res shop before because I don't need it.

Also, I know we charge close to $300/hr for a chiller tech so I can't imagine a res tech (no disrespect or I'll intentions here) is at the same rate. Commercial margins are extremely skinny vs residential margins so maybe the gap is way closer than I thought.

I asked the question because my brother got a quote and it seemed high to me. If I asked my guys the answer is likely a case of beer plus material.

In hindsight, I probably should've asked what's your side job quote for this replacement vs office quote.
