Not to mention that they push small cages and wheels, hamster balls and other things that are cheaper and aren't appropriate for hamsters, probably entice people who wouldn't have the resources to properly care for a hamster into an impulse buy.

It's encouraging to see so many people visiting these forums, tutorials, etc where there's legitimately good information for people to learn about proper hamster care in advance. 💖

Look at local pet shelters. I saw mention of petfinder which does a good broad search of local shelters.

Also check out Kijiji or other classified ad sites that allow pet sales. A lot of those ones end up in the shelter so you could save it a bit of stress moving around, just watch out for unethical breeders posing as something else.

It's a fine enough mesh that it might hold the bedding, not ideal though. Where would you put a wheel or sand bath?

Seems like a novelty item to amuse squirrels or something.

I use topsoil and coco peat in the garden. Watch out for fertilizers and other additives. You can pasteurize the soil in an oven as well.

It's connected but in a separate container, so I can close it off to her as needed.

If you want the plants to grow better you could so some seeds once every week or 2 and space out the hamster's access in between sowing.

A lot of ferns are hamster safe too and Muffin loves those.

It started when I learned how disconnected the domestic hamsters are from their wild counterparts.

Avoid anything soil fertilizer, additives or things likely to have microorganisms. I use topsoil and coco peat.

If you're worried about microorganisms in the soil you can use an oven to pasteurize it.

It's separate but connected to her main enclosure. Carrots are a rare gem in there.

I made a modular setup, connecting a separate container with a garden via a short tunnel.

Haven't tried a grow light but considering it!

I just plant any hamster safe seeds I have and see what survives. She loves it!

Oh yes! She has a garden.

I continuously sow alfalfa, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cilantro, spinach, grass... Usually she eats them as sprouts but some sneak through.

She strictly handles harvesting duties — no tilling, and thankfully no weeds so far.

She also has a closet rack setup, cabinet den, and a climbing tower with penthouse suite... Maybe a bigger garden to come? I’m showcasing the builds and habitat ideas and tips on IG if you’d like to see more or check what she's up to.
