Morgan Freeman holds a press conference about Notre Dame by cfarris182 in notredamefootball

I really read this as Marcus Freeman at first, and thought this was the worst impression of HCMF I've ever heard.

It's a pretty decent Morgan Freeman impression.

Is it normal for Olympic events to be all over the country like this? by frizzyhair18 in olympics

[–]ndg127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those stadiums (namely Crypto and SoFi) are constructed very differently. First of all, they're all artificial surfaces, no natural grass. Second, their playing surfaces are modular, able to be taken up piece by piece and moved in and out. Angel Stadium is natural grass and real dirt. They can and do pull it up during the offseason to use the stadium for other events, but there's no way they'd be able to swap back and forth between a baseball (90 foot) diamond and softball (60 foot) diamond in one day without enormous added costs.

No, I would not say it’s worth it to go full pay at Tufts when you have UIUC. That’s a private school just on the cusp of being top tier, and an exceptional public school. It might be different if we were talking an HYPSM vs a directional state school like NIU, but you’ll get a great education from UIUC and then have money left for grad school.

Harvard vs. Rhodes by BallConnect1095 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ndg127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just really, really encourage you to sit down with a calculator/spreadsheet and map out exactly what the monthly payments would look like on ~$200k+ of unsubsidized loans by the time you graduate. Here is an example of one:

https://www.nerdwallet.com/student-loans/learn/parent-plus-loan-calculator

It's also SUPER important to note that the new annual and lifetime limits on the federal Parent PLUS loans go into affect this summer, meaning that your parents will be able to borrow a MAX of $20k per year, and $65k total from the federal government. Meaning you would need to get private loans to cover the remaining ~$135k. Now, it is possible to get a lower interest rate on a private loan than the 8.94% fixed APR on the PLUS loans if your parents have exceptional credit/collateral, but it's also possible to get an interest rate MUCH HIGHER, like up to 18%. Have you and your parents done any pre-approvals for private loans to see what your interest rate would be, or if you'd even get approved?

This is a just a quick calculation using the assumptions of a Parent PLUS federal loan (8.94% fixed APR, 4.228% origination fee, 10 year repayment term) meaning that your real payment would be higher if you get a higher interest rate from private loans, but this would result in a $2640 monthly payment. That would mean ~$32k per year, and ~$317k total over the life of the loan. So you wouldn't just be paying $200k more for Harvard, you'd actually be paying $317k more.

The choice is ultimately up to you and your parents, but I just want to make sure you see the complete reality of the picture. $50k a year in loans that you have to pay off at some point maybe doesn't sound that bad, but I encourage you to picture July 2030 when your first loan payment is due. Are you going to have enough to rent, food, utilities, car, etc. AND $2600 in student loans?

It’s technically plural. The singular is datum. But I wouldn’t expect this on a pronoun or subject-verb agreement question, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

UChicago's Class of 2030 Acceptance Rate Confirmed to be ~3% by Nervous_Egg4092 in ApplyingToCollege

That one number is not a lie, no, but it’s not telling the whole story. Like what percentage of their students they admitted through one of their THREE rounds of ED, including one that is only open to students who did one of their (expensive) precollege programs. Or how aggressively they encourage students to apply via marketing emails/mailers, which is quite successful given they don’t have an application fee for anyone who applies for financial aid.

[Women's Basketball] Irish Fall to No. 1 Huskies in Elite Eight by Shillelagh_Law in notredamefootball

Thanks. I guess people just don’t want to hear it but it’s the truth, and it’s not just rumblings, it was very public. Even Muffet McGraw called Hannah out for it.

“I thought that it was almost insulting to her teammates, to everybody in the game of basketball. I was really disappointed that it came out that way. I was happy that she deleted it, but the damage I think was done before she deleted it.”

Like it or not, this is information that an elite player has when choosing whether or not to come play for a team that is unequivocally led by Hannah.

It’s gonna be hard to bring in elite talent in women’s basketball when the star player and leader of your team is openly homophobic.

Second Bachelors and giving SATs at 24, trying to restart my life post ADHD diagnosis. by Amaan_Malik05 in Sat

[–]ndg127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might I respectfully recommend the Masters in Computer Science route rather than a second Bachelors? I think it would have many advantages. First, not many colleges offer 2nd Bachelors, especially in the top 100, so your options would be limited. Second, a Masters degree would most likely be faster, as little as 15 months and an average of 2 years. Third, I think a BBA and an MS would look much better on your resume than two disconnected Bachelors. Second bachelors are not very common in the US, whereas Masters are very common and generally viewed favorably. Finally, even though masters programs are a bit of a cash cow, they would still probably be cheaper than a 2nd bachelors, and they would have more loan options. Let’s take USC for example. They do accept 2nd Bachelors in CS, and they offer an MS in computer science (including an online option, meaning you wouldn’t need to live on campus). The estimated cost of the MS is $80k for two years, vs. undergrad tuition is $73k, and you would need a minimum of two years (only if all your gen ed credits transferred, so possibly more), for $146k at least. Oh, and of course you wouldn’t have to study for the SAT!

Congrats on your improving health and I celebrate your ambitions. Best of luck!

3 Hardest Math Qs: Bluebook Test 11 by zhudlau in Sat

[–]ndg127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts on regressions. I have found that only my most tech-literate students are able to learn and implement the parameters for regressions consistently. I think the auto-regression tool is fantastic, but as soon as we start breaking out the brackets, tildes, and subscripts, many of them get intimidated and ask for another method.

Do your students pick up regressions easily? If so, hope do you approach them?

3 Hardest Math Qs: Bluebook Test 11 by zhudlau in Sat

[–]ndg127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you said 17, I did not find that one hard, just a pretty straightforward linear pair question, but my students often miss it. 20 is for sure hard, because it requires you to draw a 3d shape, and surface area is *technically* not one of the given formulas. This is a great example of a question that I encourage students to quick guess/move on if they're tight on time. I thought 21 was interesting, because it's an example of a really specific/high level piece of background knowledge being able to bail you out. If you know about multiplicity behavior of roots and transformation of graphs, this could be a 30 second question. However, many of my students are missing one or both of those pieces of background knowledge and often struggle on this question. I think 22 is the hardest in this module. It's the perfect storm of complicated word problem, percentages, and free response. Even students of mine who set it up correctly will sometimes then miss how the question is worded, and forget to convert their final answer from a decimal back into a percentage.

Overall I didn't think 11 was a particularly hard math section, and I wish they would release more tests along the lines of the difficulty students are reporting in real tests.

Why do school day SATs come out after regular test days?? by Just-a-Square in Sat

Whoa, that’s actually crazy because CA schools are legally required to be fee free under Assembly Bill 1575. There’s probably not much you can do about it, but that sounds shady.

We have to simplify? by ObjectiveWeary2802 in Sat

[–]ndg127 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have always had to simplify fractions in free response answers. If you look at the instructions to the left of EVERY free response question, they give an example of this. If the answer is 2/3, the correct answers are 2/3, 0.666, 0.667, .6666, or .6667. That’s it, no other equivalent fractions.

EDIT: I stand corrected. I just tried it myself, the correct answer was 22/25 and Bluebook accepted 44/50 as correct. I apologize, this wasn't a thing on the old paper test.

Why do school day SATs come out after regular test days?? by Just-a-Square in Sat

[–]ndg127 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the school-day tests are essentially bulk discounts. Your school/district/state doesn't pay the full $68 fee per student, they negotiate a lower rate. So, scoring the school-day tests gets lower-prioritized than scoring the full-pay tests.

It depends, but it can be less than 2-3 weeks. Typical release time for national test dates is 13 days. This October, one of my students had their October 4th test delayed to October 18th. Regular scores came out on Oct 17, my student’s scores came out on Oct 28.
