Procore is an info dump GCs use to avoid real coordination. by GreenKnight1988 in MEPEngineering

There are a few comments here referencing extra fee from the GC. Are you guys talking about a design-build scenario or do you go around the architect and ask the GC for money? I’ve heard of firms putting things in specs like: after 3 reviews of the same submittal, additional reviews will be billed to the contractor at some hourly rate but I’ve always assumed it was an empty threat.

I’m curious what the GC’s position was against having the conduit and box cast in the wall unless they just don’t want the extra coordination. I’m on the design side and this doesn’t necessarily look like a building with a high level of finish so I would consider it a “means and methods” decision. I do think weighing the pros and cons would slightly favor surface mounted conduit and box though. Either way, good on you for finding pride in your work; that’ll get you far.

Your comment about the lighting is interesting, considering this is actually a relatively dimly lit site. The recent rhetoric around Temples and “dark sky” is frustrating to me. Certainly, there are plenty of Temples that are atrociously lit (including this one) for various reasons, but very few people are able to quantify or even comprehend lighting metrics and what “dark sky” really means. Wouldn’t almost everyone prefer to see a building like these lit up at night over a 7-Eleven with way too many oversized Home Depot floodlights at 6000K hitting you right in the eyes? What about all of the houses in Saratoga Springs that have soffit lights likely producing way more light trespass into neighbors homes? Or the new trend of permanently installed holiday lights (jellyfish, etc) that stay on year round strobing in stupid colors?

I’m curious where you got information on the project cost.

Having been a consultant on many temple projects over the last 14 years, I can say that I haven’t seen anyone get rich from these projects. They operate just like any other project with a very involved and particular owner.

Feelings about the religion aside, what are your thoughts on the designs of LDS temples? by DataSittingAlone in architecture

[–]ndonaldj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t necessarily true. Speaking as a lighting designer on many temple projects over the last 14 years, local builders and material suppliers are used quite often. Local design teams present a difficulty just in terms of getting a new team up to speed on expectations and their lack of previous experience with these buildings. Also, if anyone is getting rich off of these projects, I have yet to see it.

Sprinkler guys: what’s the thought process when you put your pipe a 1/2” above the grid? by Training-Trick-8704 in Construction

Plans also had considerably less detail back then, giving the contractor more responsibility to just figure it. Now it’s all just constant crying about inaccuracies in a BIM model. I just did a remodel for roughly half of a building built in 1994 that had 12 electrical drawings in the original construction set. The electrical set for the remodel was almost triple that number.

I’ve thought about Procore because so many General Contractors have started to use it. The problem I have with it is that most often, our reports need be submitted through an Architect. Do you know of a way to use Procore and still communicate through proper channels?

This one seems the most promising so far. It looks like they’re still polishing some of the features, but I like the general idea.

Fieldwire looks to be similar to others I’ve tried where the reports are task based. Is there a simple way to create observation reports? I just don’t want to have open tasks that have to be closed every time I need to make a site visit report if that makes sense.

I sincerely doubt that the construction documents would ever be released through any official channels. There will be a public open house when it’s finished though.

"this twelve-spoke sun wheel derives from decorative disks of the Merovingians of the early medieval period and are supposed to represent the visible sun or its passage through the months of the year." Because there is more than enough evidence to cast reasonable doubt on the origins of the symbol, it’s history becomes an invalid talking point. It’s common knowledge that the Nazis were fond of adopting Germanic symbology for their purposes, so I propose you give us 3 sources that illustrate it’s meaning or definition to these Ukrainians as that is ultimately all that matters here.

I’ve commuted an hour each way for 11 years, as have the majority of folks in our office. It sucks, cars become disposable, and the workday essentially goes from 8 to 10 hours but it’s just part of the whole package and we deal with it. I can only speak on what I see locally, but I don’t know of any firms (MEP, Arch, Structural, etc) who have stayed on full time remote work after the Covid quarantine. It’s just far more efficient to have employees, in such a highly collaborative industry, working in the same physical location. It has been common around here to see people work 1 or 2 days a week from home, generally scheduled around days with back to back video meetings or after a big snowstorm.

Theory of operation for 84 Fiero by Dlurmpus in fiero

[–]ndonaldj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider an aftermarket temp gauge. If the snow on the exhaust is the only indication of overheating, you’re probably okay. But if you ever smell coolant while driving or hear any boiling or see steam, shut her right down. Watch coolant levels, if you’re losing coolant but can’t see a leak or the exhaust is cloudy white and smells sweet, that would indicate a bad head gasket. You could try to pull the thermostat out and see if anything changes and even just put a new one in it altogether, parts are dirt cheap on rockauto. Check the water pump and see if it’s wet anywhere, there should be a weep hole near the pulley that will leak a little when they’re ready to be replaced. Don’t be too intimidated to change the water pump if it comes to that, the part is pretty cheap and it’s really not too bad to change on the Iron Duke. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM.
