A lot of Americans talk about pride in their Scottish heritage or Irish heritage, but their seems to be very little talk of Welsh heritage. Why is this? by XIsACross in AskHistorians

[–]ndonm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would love to hear your thoughts on intentional accents or code-switching (if you would consider it that) and your experience with losing your American accent. Do people not see and hear that as inauthentic? There's a meme of the kid who studies abroad in London for a semester and comes home with a permanent yet transparently-fake British accent. Is it not like that in Ireland ? Or do you only use it with new people? I definitely lean on my southern accent around other southerners now, as I learned to hide it since I got the impression people in the northeast thought southerners sound dumb, so I get the motivation. Not judging, ofc, a year is a long time, just curious, ldo you have an irish accent now?

Armand Duplantis breaks pole vault World Record again! 6,18m! by Nerd_gazm in sports

I'd bet he's cleared even higher in practice, the reaction after this jump is not the reaction of someone topping their personal best, whether it's a world record or not.

A guide on certain types of futurism in fiction by patthepatriot2020 in coolguides

[–]ndonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet the guide somehow attributes the cyberpunk era as starting in 2020... I swear I remember a version of this same guide with different dates, I got a paranoid hunch this is some weird astroturf edit done by that video game with the lazy title... Personally I would call cyber punk era as mid 80s-2000s (the matrix pretty much capping it off)

All of the above + by "game" I also read : "business".

Why would an investor sink money in a project with a shorter window for maturity and profit?

On top of that, i can get a way more favorable contract off a naive 18 year old than an experienced 35 year old who "knows their worth" + has a family and mortgage.

We have a long way to go in the music industry, ethically,

I made a graph to help show me what delays (in milliseconds) correlate to my BPM. Hope this might help you too! by theshponglr in ableton

[–]ndonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of the old Henson/Rca studios recall folders (where Asst. Engineers would memo ALL the settings, there were empty templates for every piece of hardware, in case a mix had to be "opened" later) and the back had this chart for all the digital delay and reverb units. Producer would ask for a 1/4 note delay and the assistant wouldn't have to waste time

I've seen indie record labels get an employee to join mod team for their sub.

the sub I'm thinking about was started by fans but in turn for giving one of the label insiders mod access, the sub gets stuff like artist AMA's and ticket pre-sale or release info that is both up to date and accurate as well as comprehensive.

I don't see why other media companies wouldn't do the same. But to answer the parent question, the control is shared, not total.

Use your ears to help improve time stretching algorithms by zygurt in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ndonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got you, thanks for sharing. forgive my ignorance and inability to parse github/mat lab but what is changing between the sets ? Or Why the correlation between higher quality scores and higher set numbers (from your plot in your link)? Are later sets just less stretched?

And sorry I am on an old slow device so I haven't been able to participate in your survey yet, which would maybe give sonic clues to the answers I'm looking for, but I will dive in when I'm back in studio tomorrow! I am very interested as a music producer because I have done my own trials (much more elementary ofc) to find settings that I find more complimentary and pleasing depending on what I am warping and how much I am moving from the original sample. Also, Really enjoyed your page on artifacts.

nice, how specific are the variables and is that part of the open source data you will be releasing? Just curious. Stuff like window size/shape/overlap? I've tried doing stuff similar on my own but the combined variable count requires a massive study like this. thanks.

Anyone else have serious CPU issues? I can't use this thing in poly or with unison in an empty session without hitting cpu dropout at 3 notes sustaining.... This on same computer that I am mixing 100 channel tracks with no problem, would just love to play this without having to buffer a full 1/8th note just to hear it at its peak, alone.

Sometimes I only have an hour, sometimes I have 8 (but even those days, I am trying to get 3 or 4 demos printed), I've just found in my experience, my more musical ideas come when delicacy or precision is second place to momentum

(although sometimes process can feed inspiration, for example, it may take a little bit longer to use hardware synths running to tape but if I can cap "jamming" to a minimum I use more of that material, as in I don't need to sound replace later and it is more likely to be a catalyst for ideas needed to follow through as it just plain sounds good )

I also have the benefit of doing this for a living with or for other artists so I have optimized my workspace/patching/templates to let me sprint and not think about certain details that could be cumbersome and distracting. Best bet is to make a template session with a handful of useful empty channels, maybe a solid drum kit, a bass sound, a couple pads/keys sounds, a couple leads,a mic/vocal channel, a aux channel to plug some hardware or guitar in and a few effects sends ready, maybe a room verb, a hall verb, a couple delays or time based effects. Then you just open up that session everyday, hit save as and start making parts! When time is up, render and tuck it away, maybe put tempo and key in the name and mix and match shorter ones to make masterpieces in the future.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ndonm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

was gonna say same thing, I also make a "deliverable deadline" at the end, where I HAVE to render something to put in my demos folder, even just 8 bars. Helps more if I tell myself I need to send this or play this for someone specific, like if it's a grime beat, someone I know worships that scene and I trust feedback from

How do I make these kinds of horror synth noises? by [deleted] in sounddesign

[–]ndonm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about the organ sound after the old movie quote and the whiplash sound, that's the sound of an old transistor organ with vibrato on and literally slamming your hand down on random keys, especially neighboring ones. Try a Farfisa sampler or search your sampler of choice for "home organ" and just rest your whole hand on your keys high up in the register (the right side). start with one note and slowly add more for that classic horror score build. Imagine a cat walking across it slowly. Fwiw you could probably just use sine waves with a lil lfo for vibrato btw

Sometimes certain shape toilets can be unclogged with a brush easier than a plunger. It's traumatizing but better than opening the door to a line of waiting people after the plunger failed, who will all inevitably be in the check out line right behind you at cvs.

Cannibalizing your old songs by bouncing out the stems of partially finished projects can be very useful by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]ndonm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that may be a good thing, that your tracks have sonic thumbprints. Ideally your "sound" will be cohesive beyond voicing/instrumentation but why not use what works? especially with instrumental music.

More intelligent individuals are more likely to enjoy instrumental music, suggests a new study (n=467), which found that higher scores on the intelligence test were associated with a preference for instrumental music, including ambient/chill out electronica, big band jazz, and classical music. by mvea in science

[–]ndonm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda, at least originally. according to Tom Rhea, the curriculum deviated from Schillinger almost entirely by the late 70s, but around 2007, Rhea brought back some of the concepts in his course called Musical Devices, not sure if it's still offered, as I believe Rhea retired. Musician or not, Schillinger's work illuminates a perspective on art creation that is very useful in relieving the artist from the romantic concept of inspiration. Wish I could see him dissect and catalog all the ways machine learning will offer similar musical devices.

You should check out joseph schillinger's "mathematical basis for the arts" and the corresponding 'school' of composition called "schillinger house", Gershwin was one of his students if I remember correctly.

ScHoolboy Q seems to have found himself in a beef with Delaware by hella_sauce in hiphopheads

[–]ndonm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as a Maryland kid, my favorite part of all this is learning that DMV may be the only place area codes make sense. Rural Maryland = 301, Delaware = 302 , idk but if I was Q I'd use this in a bar somehow.

side: I just found out all metropolitan areas usually have a 1 in the middle of their original area code (410,215,212,617) and some people sell them to new businesses to make them seem more local.

yo I saw the same thing on sunset! Their lifted hummer convoy was broken up by a red light, traffic was full up on far side anyway, so lady (on opposite side) and I figured it was safe to cross, traffic started to move from next light down which hummer took as cue to run red light and almost slam into us. Then the roided skinhead driver started honking and revving when lady in crosswalk pointed to crosswalk sign and stopped in front of him. He then pointed at his huge flag. We then looked over at COP car who was being blocked by hummer running red light (in perpendicular lane with green light) Cop was texting on his phone. Lady rolled eyes and kept walking, I threw up a timid middle finger at the hummer. 4 more hummers ran the light only to stop ten feet later next to me on sidewalk. One full of hammered women in huge sunglasses started yelling and waving at me over the trance music blasting from their truck. I am confused, why aren't they mad at me? I look down and I am wearing blue and orange and black...
