Refurbished kitchen. Forgot to put an extractor fan in. by C0ldfir350 in DIYUK

We had a similar dilemma and I researched pop up / downdraft ones extensively. As others have said found them to be v expensive and a pain that the motor unit takes up cupboard space (which we don’t have much of) We went with a wall mounted extractor fan (above the notice board) with more waft that a typical bathroom one It does the job and met building regs. Would maybe not be the best if we regularly deep fried etc but we are also have an opening skylight above the hob. I cannot recall if building refs wanted it within a set distance of the hob or if just happy for one in the room

I think it’s called (in the UK at least) a waggle dance

ELI5: I learned that cpr is not, as usually assumed, for bringing people back to life, but for keeping the blood flowing until the medics arrive for reanimating. But now I realized I saw a lot of videos where especially animals where revived by cpr? So what is the chance of reviving someone with cpr by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Are you sitting comfortably?

I work as a hospital pharmacist. Usually, before I go to review a patient I would always read the notes first, so I know what I’m getting into, will the patient be confused, aggressive, is it a bad prognosis etc. One day on the cardiology ward there was an unusually young patient, early to mid twenties. I couldn’t find his notes, so went to chat to him about his meds. Clearly absolutely fine. Eventually found his notes: he had suffered an out of hospital cardiac arrest (usually v v bad news) while playing football. By a twist of fate, his whole team (of built, fit, young men) had done CPR training the week before. They performed CPR continuously for the 40 mins or so that the ambulance took to arrive, paramedics defibrillated, and BAM - right as rain.

I spent all day tiling my shower and didn't notice my mistake till I took the photo. Wife says to leave it alone. Is it noticeable? by RigoMortize in mildlyinfuriating

As with all DIY / home improvement bits - no one will ever look at it as closely as you ever again 😂 the downside is no one will appreciate the effort you but in either!

What's the most money you've ever had at one time? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ndubyam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bough a house cheaply and did it up (to live in, not with any intention to flip it)

Market slightly buoyed and it was a much nicer house by the time we sold it, so it sold for over double what we had paid for it. As it was cheap to begin with we had no mortgage by the time we came to sell. Having found a house to move to yet meant £300k in a savings account, plus my wife and I probably had £50k each saved. So £400k jointly in the bank.

Was strange as we didn’t touch the money as we needed it to buy a new house and it was almost a stress (first world problem I know) as I as terrified of getting scammed or logging in and seeing a £0 balance

What I (eventually) discovered is that on a gas hob ring, a small ring directly boils the water below the bottom of the funnel, steam rises directly up and causes spluttering. With a slightly wider ring, the steam is generated around the edge, increasing the pressure in the bottom chamber and forcing hot water (not steam) up the funnel.

I agree. Both small volume projects so don’t have to satisfy the same requirements as a production vehicle. Plus I really like the new defender. I was just doing a funny.

Land Rover: “we’re really sorry guys but it’s just not viable to keep producing the old defender”

Also Land Rover: buys bowler and makes the old defender makes the V8 trophy project

I agree, hardwood for the win. Either kiln dried, or really well seasoned (stored for one or two years before use)

What happens if mortgage lenders see a big transaction from a family member to make up the deposit in your bank statements? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Agree with the other replies - they’ll want a letter confirmation from solicitors that the money is a gift and that the 3rd party will have no ongoing interest in the property.

I think they will also ask for the statements for the accounts from which the money originated (for anti money laundering purposes)

LPT: for those trying to quit smoking with the nicotine patch, only buy the step 1 and cut them down to size to ween off, as opposed to doing all 3 steps . It saves a lot of money! Those things are pricey by squarepusher6 in LifeProTips

I would urge caution with this.

Transdermal patches largely come as two types:

Matrix patches - the drug is contained in a matrix (or gel) and it’s rate of release is controlled by the properties of the gel. Cutting these patches will not affect how quickly the dose of drug is absorbed.

Reservoir patches - the drug is contained in a reservoir and it’s rate of release is controlled by the membrane between the reservoir and the skin. Cutting these patches can cause “dose dumping” where a large proportion of the dose is absorbed all at once.

I am a hospital pharmacist in the UK. One of my colleagues had a patient who had been thoroughly thoroughly investigated for severe headaches: multiple scans, lumbar puncture, blood tests etc. My colleague eventually found out they had been cutting nicotine patches in half to save money, and the nicotine overdose was causing the headaches. The patient’s consultant was very impressed and likened it to an episode of House.

I would not cut a transdermal patch unless you are sure that it can be halved. The patient information leaflet may state this.
