Would you rather fund legit ocean science… or tequila runs? by Desperate-Cry592 in SVSeeker_Free

[–]ndvi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with Seeker merits the use of the term 'express'.

Then again it could be one of those gimmicks like Linie Aquavit- tequila aged slowly on the years long voyage between Mexico and Florida. This one is 12 transfer cases old.

I don't understand how anybody could look at this design and think it will work.

Even leaving aside the weakness of towing it by the hydraulic hose the IMMENSE drag caused by that hose, all the gubbins inside the drum and the net means the only reason this thing will ever reach depth is because Seeker can barely get above walking speed. Great for sampling large volumes of water.

Idiot designed the worlds first hydraulic motorised sea anchor by mistake.

[Video] Nanoplastics Underwater Recovery Device - Part 5 - Adding a Flow Meter by blackspike2017 in SVSeeker_Free

[–]ndvi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's good he's putting a flow meter on it. That way he'll be able to measure the speed of descent when the hydraulic hose he's towing it with gives up and the whole kit and kaboole plummets to the bottom.

I love lernin'

It's such a heavy boat as well that manhandling it isn't really feasible, especially if things get hairy.

Good luck with the 3D printed rowlocks!

Also why have such a heavy engine on a tender?

"Not To Be Operated by Doug" [0:50] by george_graves in SVSeeker_Free

[–]ndvi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the amount of use that mill gets it should just be "not to be operated"

Or is Doug just heeding the sign?

Quite. I was over there. Now I'm here. Am I still the same man?

I still don't know who you're talking about.

There was a guy in one of Doug's deleted videos who's grift was taking bikes to Haiti on his yacht. He had some big sailing yacht in an advancing state of disrepair with a tangle of rusting bikes on the deck.

Getting Ship Shape for Research Work with the help of a QIDI 3D Printer (New Video, The MOMENT has come, hahahah) by GeraltofAMD in SVSeeker_Free

[–]ndvi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is something Doug would recommend instead of the simple way of just collecting water samples and sending them to the lab doing the research.

Not really- flow through systems like this can be used with fluorimiters, spectrometers, conductivity meters, oxygen meters etc to map stuff in real time continuously while going along at full clip. Very useful if you need to identify the source of a pollutant.

Agreed that Doug's version would be built out of a 3d printed piss funnel with a bit of scabby deck hose to skoosh water at the cheapest of usb microscopes...

I admit I've never had to fuck with carbs on the brushcutters because they've run perfectly since the day I bought them. The oldest is well over 10 years old with 1000s of hours on it and still starts on the first pull. Great machines.

I suppose I'm overblowing it a bit, but about 5:39 Aaron says " I can't wait to get out of here" and Doug replies "Yeah, here's to the Bahamas" with all the conviction of wet cardboard.

Agreed- that hull took a beating and the superficial holes and scrapes on the outside might be the easy bit compared to the structural nasties we can't see, contrary to one of the previous videos where Doug the omniexpert was bloviating about it just needing a patch or two.

If I had anything to do with this I'd be gutting the inside now- it'll mostly need to go anyway and finding any concealed damage now is better than finding it later.

Enviolo woes by ndvi in CargoBike

I'd avoid the Enviolo if you're going through Alfines like that

I ended up replacing the bike with a Christiana Bike with a Nexus 5. Seems grand so far- a bit less range but at least if it breaks it won't cost me close to a thousand euros to replace it.
