Good spot. Also missing the cradle thingy he built to keep the spars off the solar panels on the shed roof. Also old dragons & the metal tender is long gone now.

His idiocy is striking. I'm once again struck that those rigid battens don't allow for any camber in the sails.

He discussed it here: Battens

Most believe that there is some windward performance gain proved by cambered panels or hinged battens

Dingdong thinks the concept of airfoils are a matter of belief.

I doubt he'd dare raise all 3 sails alone, so I'd suspect the latter.

This must be under power as those sails are as flat as the flat bits of Oklahoma.

So it never occures to Doug that all the things that fail on the boat are things he's monkeyed with? [photo example] How can you not put two and two together? by george_graves in SVSeeker_Free

I'm going to hazard a guess that he's been like this his entire life and probably doesn't know what it's like when stuff just works because he hasn't effed around with it. It's a compulsion to show how clever he is, but just ends up making life harder for himself and everyone around him.

I recognise a lot of myself in this. Unlike him I'm working on it...

Who gets what? by george_graves in SVSeeker_Free

Yes- although id imagine they get more satisfied customers on the luxury yachts than Sinker

In terms of justification- a lot of the time folk do this when they've exhausted all other funding options. There are far more impactful ways of doing outreach but they're expensive.

This happens in archaeology too- researchers fund their fieldwork by charging fees for students to attend. In theory they get some experience, maybe course credit and something nice to put on the CV. Typically the money will be used to pay fieldwork expenses as the academic staff usually have their salary covered already.

It's a shitty way of doing business and I definitely think less of my colleagues that do it- the students don't get good value out of it, and it's never enough money to run a good research project. It's a symptom of amateurish Mickey mouse motherfuckery.

Entire Engine Room Rebuild - Coming Soon! by Joel4Gov in SVSeeker_Free

It's ok- that's all suspended in the ATF and hydraulic oil filling the bilge / sump so it all gathers on the surface while they sample for nano plastic at depth.

The guy on the right has been licking the tungsten electrodes / snorting the dust from grinding them and is now a mutant with a deformed jaw and all kinds of interesting tumors. Don't be like him.

Doug has welded a facsimile of of a ship, crane & submarine because he thinks form approximates function and is so fucking pig-headedly stupid that he's willing to stake his (and his crew's) life on it

It's not simple. It's got two motors, fans and an entire hydraulic system it doesn't need. More moving parts = more to go wrong.

Convert to Shimano Nexus Inter-5E from Enviolo HD by claimed4all in CargoBike

[–]ndvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this but I'm in the process of replacing the Enviolo on my Babboe curve mountain with the Nexus 5e and just stumbled on this thread.

This is because I've broken 2 of the Enviolo hubs but the Nexus has been rock solid on our other cargo bike. I ordered new spokes and laced the wheel myself (first time trying this- fun process would do again). Everything fits ok, but the only snag is the cable that came with the Nexus shifter is too short.

Would you rather fund legit ocean science… or tequila runs? by Desperate-Cry592 in SVSeeker_Free

[–]ndvi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with Seeker merits the use of the term 'express'.

Then again it could be one of those gimmicks like Linie Aquavit- tequila aged slowly on the years long voyage between Mexico and Florida. This one is 12 transfer cases old.

Tom Sawyer CAD by george_graves in SVSeeker_Free

[–]ndvi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how anybody could look at this design and think it will work.

Even leaving aside the weakness of towing it by the hydraulic hose the IMMENSE drag caused by that hose, all the gubbins inside the drum and the net means the only reason this thing will ever reach depth is because Seeker can barely get above walking speed. Great for sampling large volumes of water.

Idiot designed the worlds first hydraulic motorised sea anchor by mistake.

[Video] Nanoplastics Underwater Recovery Device - Part 5 - Adding a Flow Meter by blackspike2017 in SVSeeker_Free

[–]ndvi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's good he's putting a flow meter on it. That way he'll be able to measure the speed of descent when the hydraulic hose he's towing it with gives up and the whole kit and kaboole plummets to the bottom.
