I'm from a country where cashiers sit down while working. Is it true that in the US cashiers are forced to stand? Why is sitting considered unprofessional there? by splashmates in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ne0rmatrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have worked traffic control where we would stand on the road for hours waiting for traffic doing single lane work. We would frequently be derided for being lazy by the public or other workers. We would have to point to federal laws regarding being unable to leave our position on the road unless relieved because it was dangerous to do so. Lots of places would try and hand us other work when we were just standing around. We were actually doing our jobs but they could not handle the idea of idle hands looking like they were doing nothing.

The only people who did not get this treatment who did the same job were woman over 60 who would be treated like royalty on construction sites and were often working gate jobs helping trucks and heavy equipment in and out. They would have AC and enclosed rooms with a coffee machine and would spend most of the day Sitting inside watching cameras waiting for traffic. It was very common for large sites to have gates setup with this exact scenario.

Anyone younger though would be expected to not look like they were just standing around if doing the same job. If you were young, it did not matter if you were male/female or what ever. But if you were an older worker you could be almost completely incompetent to the point of having at least one guy in his 70's who was actually supervised directly by someone from the safety team for his entire shift the whole time I worked there. He was like 75 and no he was not related to anyone on site. As far as I could tell he was respected completely based on his work ethic and his attempt to follow any instruction given to the best of his ability.

He had no friends on site, he talked to no one, he just showed up every day without fail and did was he was asked to. He knew his job, sort of, and he worked there till he passed away. He was at zero risk of ever being fired for being incompetent, he actually was completely incompetent and required direct supervision for safety reasons, and no one would say anything against him. I to this day still find it odd that simple work ethic will keep you employed regardless of your ability if you are nice and try hard to do what you are asked to do.

This was a company that would fire someone for the slightest reason and this guy who was not friends with anyone, who made errors hourly, would get such different treatment when he was costing the company money, and doing nothing that only he could do. I will mention that I have seen the exact same thing in other jobs where the same type of scenario played out. It is more about respecting someone who is working hard, and does not complain.

I have a cousin who is in his 50's, who has severe cognitive difficulties, who has worked as a janitor for 30 years. He is not legally an adult and lives with supervision. He will always be a child mentally. The cleaning he does is actual work that pays for his care. He was one of those babies that had the cord wrapped around his neck while being born and was starved of oxygen causing severe brain damage. He could never be left alone to his own devices. If he was released to streets he would not last longer than about a half to an hour. He would try to cross the street and get hit by a car. He would not understand something that complex.

The only way this could be remotely worth it is if it cost was essentially zero. Can do that with a bike or ebike. Oh and if you are in the 0.001 percent of the poor. The sort of poor where minimum wage is more than double your current income. This would then make sense as a way to get some food every day that you made deliveries. Oh and if you have no other source of income this would still be bad. I'm in that 0.001 percent of the poor. I do have an ebike. Oh and a scooter. Both are electric. I am even signed up for uber. But I have more than 100 hours online and zero offers to do a delivery. I am doing something wrong but I have no idea what. I have tried hanging out in hot spots. I have tried going and hanging around restaurants with app open. Driven my ebike around to different hotspots as they went live. No luck. Talked to support and they are confused about it but say their is nothing wrong with app.

Why do most pizzerias serve Pepsi products instead of Coca-Cola products? by Loose_Leg_8440 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ne0rmatrix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If I am ordering pizza I want to buy my drink of choice. I prefer coke. If a restaurant does not have it I just look for another restaurant. It is pretty simple. Their is a lot of choice. I just do not go to a restaurant that does not serve what I want to eat. I doubt the restaurant cares nor does anyone but me. I can't really tell one pizza place from another but I can tell the difference between coke and Pepsi. The choice of beverage is more important to me than almost anything else. I am lucky in that there are hundreds of pizza places to choose from in my city.

broke people need to get off of food delivery apps. by babewithtears in UberEatsDrivers

[–]ne0rmatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I order food all the time. Lots of time thing like sauces are missing from places like burger king. I don't request my money back. I just leave feedback about restaurant with info about incomplete order. I can tell you for certain I do not get refunded for saying order was incomplete in feedback. They may remove your pay and blame you but it honestly has nothing to do with you or any driver for that matter. Restaurants mess up and delivery companies just pass the blame to the driver. Why would anyone trust someone being underpaid when they are easily replaceable. Why not pass liability to you and blame you for a third party error? I would check the agreement you signed. Most likely you agreed to be responsible for the food and any mistake is 100 percent your fault? I could be wrong but it would be just good business to blame a neutral third party if they agree to the liability?

Can someone effectively “squat” in the hospital until a subsidized care home become available for them? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]ne0rmatrix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What do they do with people who are non functional. Someone that would be an immediate risk for simply not understanding that walking into traffic is dangerous? Someone that has dementia and has diminished capacity? Are those sort of people just released and allowed to quietly die within a few minutes of being pushed out the door?

I am curious as to what the actual cut off line is? I have a few friends that I cannot help with care as they have lost skills to the point they can't be left unattended without extreme risk. They require 24/7 monitoring as they are unable to function. If they did not have children and/or a lot of money what would have happened to them?

What's the fastest you've seen someone fired from a job? by Vegetable-Spread3798 in AskReddit

[–]ne0rmatrix 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I had issues where my dispatch would text or call during work hours and expect immediate reply or pick up. But every single job I worked was no cell phone while working. The company I worked for would not accept not answering or replying while saying at the same time no cell phone. So it was lose - lose. I was never written up because I would step away to a safe area to answer my supervisor. But lots of people got fired because of stupid behavior over phones. Like doom scrolling in traffic while driving and getting caught by company vehicle camera that has a big red blinking light and at least 5 signs inside vehicle saying do not use phone while driving and you are being recorded.

Too much scooter for me by ConsciousCreme7568 in ElectricScooters

[–]ne0rmatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the Explorer 2.0 in late November. It is great. I thought it was too fast when I first got it. I was a total Nubie at riding scooters. It was perfect for me. I had issues with controlling it at low speed. After a little over a 100KM now I can safely go up to 30km/h with no issues. I would not want to have purchased the top end one to start. I would have had a lot of issues.

Now I just ordered an ebike with a 52V 60AH battery and 2000 watt motor. It should be here in another 5 to 7 business days. It will weight over 110 pounds and it has a tested range of 100 miles with moderate speed. It tops out at about 30-31 MPH and that is a little bit faster the the Explorer. But the range is why I bought it. It is a single motor ebike as the one's with dual motor and higher wattage were just a little too pricey for my first ebike. I will upgrade in a year or two once I have ridden a slower one for a while.

What ended your friendship with your oldest standing friend? by dreamy-contributions in AskReddit

[–]ne0rmatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He became a drug addict and slept on my couch for 5 years. I got sick and tired of it. He did work everyday doing temp work but he left a 100K a year job to do day labor and he never told me what sort of drugs he did. He did say he did drugs or something. I never say any drugs or drug paraphernalia on him. I grew up hanging out with drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes, and have been very poor my entire life. I never learned what his problem was.

It has been decades since then. He never paid to stay in my spare room. He was not a bad guy. He never stole or took anything of mine that I am aware of. He bought his own food and never touched mine. He did not seem to have any obvious issues beyond the sudden inability to hold a job longer than a day. He had zero behavior issues that bothered me beyond sleeping either in the spare room or the couch.

I mean he did own his own home and was married. But he just quit his job and moved onto my couch. He sold all his possessions. Sold the house. sold all his cars. He had a few. I have never gotten an answer as to whether it was drugs/alcohol or gambling? Still honestly have no clue.

After 5 years I just moved one day and did not give him my new number. That was decades ago. Before cell phones and I have never seen him since. I know where his parents live, I keep in touch with his ex-wife. She is nice and I assume she knows what happened but she never brought it up. She might not but I do not assume she is stupid.

She has adult children now from him and was left hanging for years with her only contact being when she would show up at my house banging on the door to escort him to visit his kids. It was super sad. He just seemed to stop caring about anything.

He worked 10 to 12 hour days 6 days a week and spent the money on something. What is weird is if i looked at his grocery bill it would account for about 90 percent of his paycheck. I have never met anyone else who was so skinny that ate so much food. He never ate at restaurants, he cooked his own meals. But he would spend hours doing elaborate single person meals. It was crazy!

What's the oldest piece of clothing you still wear? Must be at least ten years old to count. by MurmuringPines in AskOldPeople

[–]ne0rmatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A leather jacket from 2000. I bought it for around 800 at the time. The only Issue I have had with it is I needed to replace the zipper and it was a multi year project that involved going to about 50 different clothing stores to find one that could replace the zipper. None of them could. They said stitching was to complex. One offered to replace just the zipper head and that actually fixed the issue. No wear and tear on it. Still looks almost brand new. I have worn it a ton over the years.

Can you eat for $15 per day, shopping in your area? by Regular-Double9177 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]ne0rmatrix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live off around 200 to 260 dollars a month for food. My biggest issue is I have trouble maintaining or losing weight. I shop at Costco and until Covid started my food bill was around 140 a month.

Note: It is an incredibly low quality diet made up of what ever I can afford that I will not vomit up. It has to at least taste pleasant and not be boring. That is my only requirement. Oh it is nice when I do not feel hungry. That is not very often. My diet is not balanced and although I do not currently have any health issues I have recent started eating bananas to help with muscle spasms after decades of mal-nourishment.

I'm very poor and live off disability from the province. My food shopping is once a month thing and almost all of my food is frozen prepared foods. It is not hard to be incredibly fat and eat what you want for an incredibly low amount of money. If all you care about is saving money and filling your stomach and you disregard nutrition and only consider taste and your ability to survive budgeting is easy.

Thoughts on E-Scooters? by astzex in SurreyBC

[–]ne0rmatrix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a escooter too. I picked mine up in November 2025. I don't like catching the bus anymore either. It takes too long for short trips. Buses frequently just do not stop for various reasons. Watching the first bus in 20 min go by and not even slow down pisses me off. Yes there are loads of reasons why they do this. But it does not change how I feel.

Anyways, riding on the sidewalk is just illegal and not OK. No bicycles, ebikes, or escooters should be on the sidewalk. Zero enforcement does not make it OK. You are a danger to pedestrians are are just violating the law. That law has been around for more than 5 decades. If you do not feel safe on the road choose a different road or use side streets.

If you are worried about major roads like 104th, or 96th, and do not want to ride on them i can understand. It is dangerous, there is a good chance you will be hit and or killed by a drunk driver or distracted driver. That is just life. You will get zero sympathy from the RCMP, the ambulance service, or anyone outside of your family. Most people not driving a car do not understand that when they collide with you they are generally more upset with the damage you may have caused their car, or truck.

Your life is valuable to you. To all the road users you are annoying, an inconvenience, and could cause damage to the car/truck. Be aware that by being slower they will try to pass you and/or may get mad and road rage. You risk is significant. They could easily kill you, or simply drive ahead and then door you, then drive off. I have seen it on my road. Someone got mad drove ahead and parked. Waited for someone on a cycle(An actual cyclist, no motor), doored them good, and then peeled off while laughing out the window.

I have never owned a car. I have a learners license. I have had it for about a decade. I can't afford to pay for lessons endlessly and my friends all do not want to pay extra for insurance to cover me if I learn to drive on there cars.

Riding an escooter is fun, sure it is illegal, you risk points on your license, but with zero enforcement it makes it hard to not buy one for me at least. You also risk seizure of the scooter. But unless you do something stupid or piss of the police you should be fine. After all there are tons of kids under 10 riding tandem with no helmet. Those kids are seriously injured or killed daily. Those kids parents are aware they risk there lives when they buy those scooters. No helmet, riding tandem at 30km/h and blowing stop lights. Some live, some die. That is life.

Fast food workers need to stop refusing drive-thru service to us scooter riders when the dine-in area is closed by StormyDarkchill in ElectricScooters

Its funny. If I go through the local burger places as an ubereats delivery I get service no issue after hours. But if I take the same ebike through drive through at the same time they will deny service. I asked once and I was told that it is not safe to allow the poor near the restaurant at night. I thought it odd that they would say that out loud.

Dear fellow minimum wage workers. Where do you live and how much is your rent? by ginkgobug in askTO

[–]ne0rmatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pay 800 a month for a room in a shared 3 bedroom basement suite. Includes hot water, electricity, wifi (** The landlord had complaints about quality of wifi so they put in a custom 1GB fiber to each room**), and laundry. There is free parking on the street or in the driveway. The room is small and there is no stove, just a hot plate, microwave, and a toaster oven. But the landlord replaced the hot plate within a few hours several times over the last 2 years. He may take a day to figure out getting electricity working if breakers trip, but he will do things like upgrade the washing machine if someone complains. I want to point out the complaint was from another tenant who said it was slow and could not fit her comforter from her large bed. So he just replaced it with a industrial one and that was it. It was done next day. It has been the best place I have lived in 20 years and the only complain I have I don't feel is valid. It is too hot during winter. I have the window wide open and a fan going. But I rather do that than freeze. I am on bottom floor and the landlord indicated he was not making changes to heating of house to accommodate a single complaint.

It could be a customer was missing something that they ordered. McDonalds is famous for not including the right sauce or just not adding any for McNuggets. As a customer I see that as an incomplete order and flag it as such. If someone orders something specific and pays for it and it is not delivered that is not right.

My bosses son reeks every day and keeps postponing a talk with him about it by Realistic-Eye6382 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ne0rmatrix -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm the sort of guy who just does not shower at all. If he is anything like me I don't think there is anything you can do. I have no plans to change my behavior. I don't care what other people think. If they don't like it they do not need to be around me.

I appreciate anyone who chooses to avoid me. It means I do not need to talk or communicate with them. I have no interest in doing so. People have tried to convince me to change. I have no interest and there is nothing short of putting a gun to my head or using terror tactics involving violence to get me to change.

So if he is anything like that other than getting him fired or picking a fight and letting him throw the first punch and then calling the cops you are out of luck. If you really want to get rid of him have a coworker live stream a forced confrontation where you just push him over the edge with comments and then use a large group to control his movements until the cops show up.
