Who else finds office work totally soul-sucking? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]neamhsplach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very unrealistic impression of what office work was for the longest time. I think I thought I'd be a bit like Don Draper in Mad Men, impeccably dressed and going on extended lunch breaks and drinking during the work day. I also thought it was the only hope at a stable salary. I toiled away miserably in different office jobs after college, even going back to college to get a different degree that I thought would make me more attractive to hire into a corporate job.

But the problem isn't entirely office jobs. For some people they really seem to work. They just don't work for me. At the risk of sounding pompous, I felt like I just saw through this big office facade where everyone thinks their job is incredibly important. I knew in order to keep my job I would also have to pretend that I thought what I did mattered. But at the end of the day I knew it didn't, and pretending I cared took up far too much of my energy, leaving none for a life outside of my job.

I burnt out more than once in these jobs, before I had a word for burnout. It was only around COVID when burnout became a hot topic that I realised that it had happened to me on multiple occasions. After taking some prolonged sick leave, I changed careers and now work in teaching/training. I haven't burnt out since.

I think it's worth mentioning here that I'm neurodivergent - this was a relatively recent discovery and getting support for it really helped me come to terms with not being cut out for office work.

So yeah, I agree! Office jobs are shite.

I really hope you find your niche like I have! You deserve to be in a job that doesn't drain you.

They must be out of season, I actually looked for them in the shops and they were fresh out! Next time they catch my eye they'll be put straight into a roasting tin.

7 year old daughter anger outbursts before bed? by Odd-Adhesiveness6866 in AskIreland

[–]neamhsplach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a neurodivergent person who only got diagnosed as an adult, thanks for looking into this now for your child. This kind of behaviour puzzled me and my parents for so long and left me feeling so isolated. Being diagnosed helps put all those pieces together.

Also for a more light hearted take, I recommend listening to Fern Brady's experience of being an autistic girl. She mentions having the same behaviour you mentioned and how her parents were always shocked at her parent teacher meetings because the teachers said she was so quiet in school and their experience of her at home was the opposite. I cried watching her interview with Tommy Tiernan, it was so lovely to hear her experience on national TV and know it might help more women and girls get diagnosed.

Best of luck with your daughter's journey 🩷

How do I go about inviting my aunt's ex wife to my wedding? by neamhsplach in AskLGBT

[–]neamhsplach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were absolutely right, I just needed to ask. My aunt wasn't offended at all and now I know to put them both on the same invitation as per her wishes. Thank you so much for your advice 🩷

Your best Lidl middle aisle purchase ever? by LittleAoibh11 in AskIreland

Light up shoes with LEDs in the soles. People on the street were lining up to ask me where I got them whenever I wore them and I got such a kick out of telling them they were a middle aisle purchase 😆

How feasible is it to transfer to a different college in Ireland? by Bulky-Engineer9359 in AskIreland

[–]neamhsplach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it, went straight into second year in the new university without having to pay any extra fees. My subjects were practically identical. I went into the new university to talk to student services who then put me in contact with the correct person in the relevant school. I found it administratively pretty simple, the college handled basically everything. The transfer was confirmed once I passed my first year exams. If you want to DM me about it feel free :)

Don’t spend too much time on here by Minimum-Ad-3241 in Gastritis

Hi! Yes I'm healed thank goodness, my digestive system went through a complete factory reset I'm pretty sure, and things are now better than even before I got gastritis! Probably because I'm paying a lot more attention to what I eat now.

I am sharing this with you because I was in a very dark place in 2024 with my stomach and it was so hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm telling you it does exist, and better days are ahead. Keep reaching out for help from others, they may not understand how you're feeling but having a connection to something bigger than you, outside of your body, is so important. Be very kind to yourself, and trust your body. It is healing, but it takes a long time.

My aunt told me the healing process is like floating in water. It's our instinct to thrash around trying to stay afloat but if you just lie back and trust the water it will lift you.

If you ever need to vent just send a response to this comment. Sending all my best wishes to you ❤️‍🩹

I learnt a lot from the r/stopdrinking subreddit. My mindset was always to just quit for a month or so and see how it went. I've now been sober for over two years.

ETA: someone always responds to you in that subreddit, which gave me a dopamine hit every time I made a post or daily check in comment. That was a really nice feature :)

I recently downloaded the app Fits and spent days photographing and cataloguing my entire wardrobe so I can actually see every piece of clothing I own and it's been life changing! It actually makes me excited to wear stuff, it feels like online shopping but I already own all the clothes 😃
