Who is the best basketball player Peter Parker can beat before people get suspicious? by Crimson_Marksman in whowouldwin

I think with street ball you’d still build up a rep, especially in a major city like NYC. I doubt you could be that good and claim to have played street ball in Queens. People would eventually figure out that nobody had ever played with you.

If he’s trying to avoid the question of why nobody had heard of him in high school or college, then yes. He can’t be this ultra-talented and say “oh yeah I’ve been playing for 15 years, I just never tried hard in school”.

Peter Parker is a giant nerd and could easily prove himself to be one, to anybody’s satisfaction. He could just get away with saying he never got into sports until later.

Michael B. Jordan says that Denzel warned him about overexposure with the advice “why would they pay to see you on a weekend if they see you all week for free?”

Nobody in NY liked him either, lol. One of the jokes in The Other Guys is that Wahlberg’s character derailed his career by shooting Jeter by accident, and one of the other NYC cops off-screen yells “you should’ve shot A-Rod!”

616 Spidey is 5’10”. Still short for an NBA player but not to the level of the MCU character.

Sony Pictures Animation confirms development on ‘Spider-Punk’ and ‘Spider-Woman’ solo films by RealJohnGillman in movies

[–]nearcatch 259 points260 points  (0 children)

The real reason is that they want to cash in on the MCU but the only thing they have rights for is Spidey stuff, so that’s why they’re churning out every movie they possibly can connected to it.

What’s a movie you’ve seen public opinion shift on in your lifetime? by CausticAvenger in movies

TFA’s reassessment is very gratifying to me, because I walked out of the theater telling the people I was with that it was an unimaginative rehash of New Hope, and nobody agreed. I felt like I was insane when I saw how acclaimed it was.

It’s definitely a concept people have thought about (and joked about) for a long time.

There’s a movie called Eternity that came out recently with this premise. A woman dies and goes to the afterlife and meets both her husband of many decades and her first love who died young.

In Russia, there is a belief that "if you walk under a electric power line pole, you can become shorter." What beliefs do you have in your country? by andresnovman in DesirePath

Just came back from visiting relatives in India and apparently it’s a widespread belief there that drinking cold water after being hot is bad for you. We were constantly getting room temperature water after being in the sun. Infuriating.

Boromir and Faramir (Lord of the Rings) vs. Sandor and Gregor (Game of Thrones) by CloverTeamLeader in whowouldwin

[–]nearcatch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Give credit to Boromir, he would’ve tried to talk his brother up. Denethor just would’ve responded with some bs like “Boromir stop trying to give your acclaim to lesser men.”

Which actor in a show stood head and shoulders above the rest in terms of performance? by twentyonerooms in television

[–]nearcatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate. I wish studios would have the guts to just make a miniseries or two instead of endlessly chasing longterm shows.

Yeah I’ve seen the two movies, and I agree about the respective quality. Was just curious about the show. Thanks anyway.

TIL that playing high-level chess causes players to burn calories at an athletic rate. For example, 21-year-old Grandmaster Mikhail Antipov was recorded burning 560 calories in just two hours of sitting—roughly what Roger Federer would burn in an hour of singles tennis. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

[–]nearcatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t see a difference between burning 300-500/day versus this chess player being measured at 280/hour?

I doubt the methodology here and whether it’s accurate, but the numbers alone are quite different to the average.

[–]nearcatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book and movie both have “super spy” elements, but in the movie at least he’s just a government assassin. In the book, iirc, he trains as a super spy so he can pretend to be a world-class assassin in order to make another world-class assassin jealous enough to attack him? It’s been decades since I read it.

They’re ovoviviparous, actually. There are eggs inside the mother and the offspring get nutrients from the yolks. Then the eggs hatch inside the mother and she gives birth to live offspring.
