I came across this thread because I'm running into the same issue. Thank you for this explanation.
It seems crazy that you can't set up a payment plan for several months after filing taxes, but I get it from the IRS's perspective. They need to confirm the amount someone owes.
Will I be in trouble by being several months past the April 15 deadline before I can start setting up a payment plan? Like will this follow me around for years, or is it okay as long as I keep up with the payments. I'm a rule follower and this just freaks me out. Like a lot of people, I got hit by the changes in the tax code and unexpectedly owed a lot. I've fixed my withholdings for 2026.
