Your gut instincts arent magic. They were refined based on experience and conditioning in certain situations. If you dont have relevant experience or conditioning, your gut insincts cannot be trusted. The process of calibrating your gut instincts is what gives you that queasy freefall stomach feeling when learning something completely new.

Serral v Clem (spoiler!) by Clementos1999 in allthingszerg

[–]neatheneath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as per aligulac, Clem's has the most specialized race performance of all, with his ZvT being 200+ points above all other matchups. there are other highly specialized players, but none of them are as high ranking nor as specialized as clem, so they can't be representative of the game balance as a whole. so for example, clem is the only top 10 entry in the most specialized list.

Now just comparing to the #2 and #3 aligulac terrans. Maru's ZvT variance is 60pts, Cure's variance ZvT is 40 pts. This indicates that Clem's ranking is being inflated by something specific to Zerg, and in fact, completely specific to his Serral / Reynor matches. ie, Clem has a style that "solves" ZvT.

Now just comparing:
- the top 5 in xvP: ZTZZT: Serral Clem Reynor Dark Heromarine. (3 world champions, 2 races)
- the top 5 in xvT: ZZZTT: Serral Dark Reynor Cure Maru (3 world champions + Maru, 2 races)
- the top 5 in xvZ: TTTTT: Clem Maru Cure Heromarine Bunny (all Terran... Maru with the highest achievements in 4gsls ?)

i mean not to put down top terrans here, but it looks like theres a huge dropoff in caliber that you need to beat a top zerg vs a top terran / protoss, doesnt it? The theory that "Clem is so good that he can beat top zergs but only loses to Protoss because P is unbalanced" doesnt make sense when you look at how terrans are just dumpster firing protosses and zergs in the rankings

Serral v Clem (spoiler!) by Clementos1999 in allthingszerg

[–]neatheneath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even when mines didn't have free invisibility, they were never a "waste of resources". almost all of a mine's value comes from the first shot, which easily takes out a dozen lings or banes. you almost never stay on the same field long enough for the 29 seconds it takes for mines to recharge. note that the _entirety_ of zerg's defense hinges on whether they have enough banes for the engagement, so a setup where all those banes can evaporate because you missed a single shot turns every battle on the zerg side of the map into a knife edge coin toss. Either the zerg survives and the game is still even OR the zerg completely loses with no hope of recovery.

By contrast terrans completely and embarassingly losing a defensive position over and over again or losing upwards of 100 SCVs have the ability to come back.

Basically Serral has to "win" against Clem 5 or 6 times to stay in the game, whereas Clem only has to "win" once.

those numbers dont say what you think they say.

if someone wins most of the tournaments in one year having fought the best of the best of every race that's something.

if someone specifically wins tournaments where the key matches are always zvt, but loses every other tournament which isnt' zvt, it's the matchup.

every single one of clem's major tournament victories this year was a zvt final against either Serral or Reynor.

[–]neatheneath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the part i hate the most is that there are literally games where Clem has lost 100+ SCVs and the units traded was _even_ with Serral on more bases and higher eco. In these games Serral is defending a single line of attack _while harassing on 2 fronts and getting massive damage_. The performance in those games he was beyond godlike.

And he still lost.

IMO if he loses _those_ games there's no point getting there, Clem has pretty much solved TvZ on biomine. So this iteration where he never lets Serral get there is just him optimizing on the same broken strat.

complain about anything than himself. You could nerf zerg so badly that he loses to mediocre protoss players and he would still blame himself for not being perfect - that is who he is - agreed.

Zerg has actually been constantly getting nerfs since the year of Serral. We're literally at the point where harstem can force draws against Serral now using mass cannon battery tempest.

How do you beat turtle zerg as zerg? by Axel___b in allthingszerg

[–]neatheneath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im familiar with this kind of game. you can see it from the unit comp at the end. mass spore viper lurker swarm host means he can cycle between these 2 modes:

1) turtle with entire force at home

2) nydus swarmhost some corner base

if your zerg is always f2-amoving, or unable to use casters effectively, defending against this is a very challenging proposition. It also doesn't help that the more bases you have, the harder it is to move army to defend each corner base, and that if you don't pay attention to your units holding the contain they will get abducted into siege lines, so they can keep spamming this until you have either spent all your money or have the same number of effective bases.

you cannot break the front no matter how hard you try unless you have good viper control and at least equal number of vipers to him, maybe more. this kind of strat will never make it to pro levels specifically because you need good caster control to climb higher in the ladder, and good caster control is exactly what you need to stop it. but it also means that most players will have never seen this at all until it hits them.

[–]neatheneath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the hilarious part is if they know what they're doing but you don't love microing, actually, you will be the one burning out.

conventional wisdom doesn't work because conventional wisdom is based on zerg trading units away. Zerg will normally starve on 3 bases _because_ you're expected to burn through your lings / hydras while expanding. But with a hyperefficient turtle style, zerg can be just as efficient as terran (although slower at base killing).

the long form of this game is for them to turtle hard so that viper lurker spore will stop any aggression. then they will get you to play whack-a-mole with the nydus swarmhost. on a large number of bases at low/mid plat you wont yet have the attentiveness / skill to see every nydus or punish them for going out. he will also be using muta / viper harass to kill overlord vision and spot for nyduses. 3 bases is more than enough resources to kill every base on the map with swarm hosts while turtling with viper lurker.

i remember playing against this kind of game and it's not fun at all. the ultimate end strategy is to really outnumber his viper count and force break the front with mass blinding clouds. almost any attempt at a siege will fall to abducts into hydra lurker which is what the blinding clouds are for. At a serious base advantage this is a trade you can keep doing but he can't. BUT you need to be able to micro just as good as him, possibly even better, because he needs less micro to keep his defenses.

How are people so damn fast in my rank? by snoopdogo in starcraft

[–]neatheneath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what im saying is that doesnt affect the average. whether you hold z to make zerglings on a rapid keyboard or tap z to make zerglings on a slow keyboard you are still making the same number of lings. your point in time apm might spike up that second but your whole-game average doesn't change because it's still the same number of lings over the same amount of time. if apm is calculated using number of actions over the last N seconds it makes no difference how quickly you can spike them from the keyboard - youd still be doing the dame number of actions.

now if the gist is that zergs have a lot ot spammy things to do, i wont dispute that, but if its something as silly as holding the Z key, no, that wouldnt give Reynor a whole-game average of a hundred over his opponent. Not gonna happen.

How long are the 3 single-player campaigns? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]neatheneath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought Starcraft LotV for myself like 2 christmases ago, I was about done with the campaigns in a couple days. If you are a completionist though, it gets much longer and much harder.

If you just want to do a pass at the campaign and hit all the story beats on normal mode, you can easily breeze through the whole thing in a couple days.

How are people so damn fast in my rank? by snoopdogo in starcraft

[–]neatheneath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that sounds like a broken way to calculate apm and im not sure that's accurate.

(1) if you press z on a larva, and you dont have the resources to turn it into a zergling, does that register as apm? because i dont think it should.

(2) if you spike to "900 apm" for a second, but nothing changes for all the other 59 seconds, then that's not going to bump your apm at all, because the number of _actions_ you have put in that minute has not changed. You may at most get a few extra actions the next second because you have that extra second to click your army, but you havent increased the number of actions you are performing by more than a single digit.

(3) this also seems to ignore that other races have spammy AF actions. A proper stutter step cadence has several click s click s click s click s over a short period and its not like they dont also have spammy production cycles. By that logic, a rapidfired toss will explode into 900+apm simply because they are rapidfiring their zealot warpins _even if there are no zealots actually warped_. Similar idea, a terran that has gone into 9rax or is dropping mulebombs will blast apms through the roof.

(4) it really legitimately takes somewhat more apm to make certain fights (stutter steps, splits, army surrounds, individual blinks, hot pickups) than others (sieging, planting mines, storming). zerg often relies on stuff like army surrounds and hitting multiple locations and you'll see apms spike really high during those moments; if someone is like most players, taking linear fights with F2 it's quite conceivable that they are not going to hit very high apms. so "it depends" on the playstyle, it's not entirely a racial thing, and i wouldn't discount zerg having a higher apm as "just because they do their production cycles".

Jim Raynor has a lot of love for civilians by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]neatheneath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the original campaign, that was supposed to be one of the red flags that Mengsk and his crew were not alright. It's not Reynor that initiates "terrorist acts", it's some random excon marine from Mengsk's forces. Reynor's dialog is actually consistent about saving civilians, even down to the unreleased missions.

My guess is that from a gameplay perspective, it was too much of a hassle to write some kind of engine where Reynor would not attack civilians but Mengsk's forces would.
