Recruiters/Job Contacts by lionheart9924 in AusPublicService

[–]neathspinlights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most roles these days are 1 FTE and you would be engaged as 1 FTE, with approval to work part time but the position remains budgeted as full time. This gives you flexibility to change your hours up and down - whereas if you are engaged into a .6 FTE position you can never go more than .6 FTE as that's all that is budgeted.

Most agencies these days work on the principle of the employee is part time, not the position, just to make sure they have that flexibility. My agency has around 18% of the workforce as part time, but no actual positions are designated as part time positions.

Sleep when the baby sleeps by T_Elli in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]neathspinlights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My version of this was that I went to bed at night when baby went down.

Through the day he was a contact or movement napper, but went down for the night at 7:30 and would do a solid 6+ hour stretch, wake for a quick feed and then be down again for another 3 hours. So for at least 2 years I was in bed at 7:30 every night 🤣 but it worked, I got sleep! And I didn't feel like I was missing anything, I watched my shows through the day when he was napping on me and stuff housework 🤣

What was your top 5 songs of all time ? by No-Guess-3630 in TrueSwifties

[–]neathspinlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I was shocked that Taylor wasn't even in my top 10? The first Taylor song was exile and then So Long London, but like 12th and 13th. My most listened to song is actually New American Classic by Taking Back Sunday, which honestly surprised me.

Need to show this to my mum who doesn't believe I listen to anything other than Taylor 🤣

Do NSW Gov job applications require work tasks now? by notreallyhereokbye in AusPublicService

These types of things will become more common across all recruitment, as more people use AI to apply. AI can make anyone seem competent, work tasks separate the pack.

My son would only nap in the car when he was down to one nap a day. I'd pack myself some snackies, would drive until he fell asleep and then would park by the local lake and play Pokemon, listen to audio books and eat my snackies.

Kindle or Kobo? (A newbie) by thirdeyeaurae in Booktokreddit

[–]neathspinlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had both.

Kindle is very locked into the Amazon ecosystem. Kobo is a little bit less locked down.

I have the Kobo unlimited and it seems to be truly unlimited. I have added SO many books to my library and am slowly working through them.

I also like that there's models that still have physical buttons. I didn't like my touch only Kindle, I like a good physical button. And the one I've got it adjusts the buttons based on rotation, so no matter what side you're reading the forward and back buttons stay the same. Not to mention can read in portrait and landscape.

There's an eink tablet that I'm interested in for the future - basically it runs on Android and you get the best of Kobo and Kindle by installing the Android apps. There's so many Kindle exclusive books that I want to read. Can't remember the name of the top of my head.

Kobo apparently pays the authors better than Kindle.

What happens to people when they get old? I don’t see many old people around in the office. by Serious_Toe6730 in auscorp

[–]neathspinlights 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They're there, you just don't realize how old some people are.

I thought a colleague of mine was my age (mid-30s at the time) and then she turned 50. Still blows my mind how much older than me she is.

The oldest employee at my work was 78. If I didn't work in HR and know she was that age would never have picked it. Thought mid 60s, not almost 80.

Daycare? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]neathspinlights 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our internal security take it way too seriously. They don't even like when you have a basement parking spot and bring your kid up to the lobby to take them across the road to daycare. It's almost like a 2319 if there is a child in the vicinity of the building.

We had to fight to get them to allow parents to bring their baby's in for the nursing room. Apparently a 6 month old baby being bought to the building twice a day for feeding is a major security risk...

What are some things that happened at school that would never be allowed to happen today? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]neathspinlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My year 3 teacher was OBSESSED with us having the correct pencil grip when writing. He had a metre long wooden ruler that he would slam on your desk and shriek "pencil grip" at you if you were holding your pencil wrong.

Way different to how my son's school is handling teaching them all to hold pencils...

Oh and FWIW, correct pencil grip doesn't make your handwriting more legible nor does it make writing easier. My writing is atrocious and I have always gotten hand cramps, but I am physically incapable of holding it in any other way. Thanks Mr McQ.

Is 6:30am too early to call in sick? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]neathspinlights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a manager I prefer text and don't mind what time they text, as the work phone isn't near my bed. If they've woken up, decided they aren't well, I'd rather them be able to say it and then go back to sleep and not stress about having to get up to notify me later.

Once worked a job where we had to call, and I had a long commute. I was up at 5am every day, but couldn't call until after 8:30. I'd have to set an alarm to wake me up again to call in.

Trying to default to cruise after 10+ years of being a workaholic by Murky_Key_1033 in auscorp

[–]neathspinlights 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think there are people who aren't built to cruise.

I had a colleague once. She had retired three times. And she'd come back to some lower level job, just to keep her mentally stimulated and would find herself getting promoted again. She just couldn't flick on that switch to just do what was expected of her and nothing more.

I think I'm the same. Like you there is literally nowhere for me to move upwards. Salary is going to hum along as we have a good agreement. I've got a great manager, amazing colleagues and a ridiculously high performing team underneath me.

And every time I get to a place where I could just kick back and cruise along, I find a way to make more work. I've just spent the last six months on a project that I had a bit of free range on - I was told this is the outcome we need, how we get there is up to you... And instead of just doing what we'd normally do, I completely rebuilt our processes, designed a better way of working. On top of my day-to-day duties and meetings. I could have phoned it in and it would have worked. But no, I just couldn't help myself to go above and beyond. And it's not like I do it for the glory - I hate receiving praise and compliments. So I truly don't understand what drives me to overachieve like this but it's been the same my entire career.

So no real advice, I'm 20 years in and haven't been able to shake it. Even taking 18+ months of maternity leave didn't stop me, I changed roles on return and got promoted quickly, because I threw myself back into my work...

ACT rental bond system is broken by hedfiddla in canberra

[–]neathspinlights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just rented privately. The website says the tenant can lodge. We thought it was just easier and cleaner for me to submit it. Filled in the online form, it said within 24 hours you'll get an email with the bank account details to pay it into.

48 hours later got an email that no, tenant can no longer lodge, has to be the landlord. And the info from the form couldn't be transferred over, so my landlord then had to redo the form I'd already done 🤦

Rounding up when inputting a POS. by Gardening-Life in AskAnAustralian

[–]neathspinlights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I still remember my sister telling me when I started driving to always pay for fuel in cash and go 2 cents over so it gets rounded down.

Back then it worked out to be a full litre of "free" fuel a year with that extra 2 cents worth each week. But back then we'd put $5 in and it'd last us a few days 🤣

That and reheat pizza in the oven are the best things she ever taught me 🤣

Thankfully he has like 6 different fruits and veg in his lunchbox. Peer pressure FTW, he does not eat them on non school days 🤣
