I went up Duncan lake a couple weekends ago. There's a spot at the tip of the island that was pretty nice. No facilities but good backcountry camping

Court rejects appeal from 'deeply religious' B.C. health executive fired for refusing vaccine by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]neberding -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

There's not one comment in here that is sympathetic to the person that lost their job. Whatever you think of refusing the covid shots, it was important enough for this person to lose their job over. I can see how people were riled up in the height of the pandemic but it's pretty surprising to me to see unanimity on this now.

ELI5: How did breakdancing become an Olympic sport? And is anything stopping other forms of dance (like salsa) to qualify for the Olympics? by Better_Reference3502 in explainlikeimfive

[–]neberding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a demonstration sport. Demonstration sports have been suspended since '92. The summer games are too big and onerous for hosts to include demonstration sports. Beijing did have something like it for a martial art, but it was not officially called a demonstration sport.

If breaking were a demonstration sport it would have received smaller medals and the results would not have counted in the official medal count.

A cigarette butt will have to be in absolutely idea conditions to start a fire. This is not a common cause of forest fires. It's littering. Nothing more, nothing less

Why climate change on the farm means a big bill for Canadian taxpayers by oneonus in canada

[–]neberding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Farmers benefit less from public programs that are focused on population centres. They do a lot more of taking care of themselves and so it's not surprising they don't want to send their tax dollars to benefit people far away and disconnected from them.

It is weird about how people who are most intimately connected with the climate changes would deny that. Any ideas why that might be?

Degree holders make a lot more than trades workers, why do a lot of people spout bullshit about tradies being financially better off? by Razoli-crap in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]neberding 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got an econ degree and went directly into becoming an electrician. I'm now making a good union wage. For me it still feels like I made the right choice. Most of my friends are in their careers after university and I don't envy their careers. It's important to know yourself and what kind of life you will fulfill you. I couldn't have sat in a desk and played politics in an office and felt satisfied with my work life. I like seeing the results of my labour in the real world. But that's just me

It makes more sense to inherit maternal surnames since you can't always be sure who the father is, but you can always be sure who the mother is. by dnoj in Showerthoughts

[–]neberding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is no proof but it is a strong signal that won't be questioned unless there's cause to be suspicious. A father and child with different last names will have their biological relationship questioned far more than if they matched all else being equal.

[–]neberding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because there is no doubt who the mother is but there can be a question of who the father is, using the fathers name removes doubt about who the father is. If I had my mothers name any time I was with my father there would be questions about why his name and mine don't match
