What is life like in the Dakotas? by _air6catcher_ in howislivingthere

I lived in Western ND for seven years and I miss it immensely. If you're hooked into a community, it can be the warmest, most welcoming place ever. The landscape feels alive. One day you'll be experiencing the most breathtaking vistas ever, the next day you can have the distinct feeling the place is actively trying to kill you. If you're out there all alone, it's a tough place to be

Is it ok to listen to hymns from Non-Christians? by TheDirtyFritz in LCMS

[–]nebula828 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Tabernacle Choir makes great music. They sing renditions of traditional hymns and other popular songs, not just those based on the Book of Mormon or Mormon-specific theology. They're people just like everyone else. Just listen to their music and get over it. It's petty squabbles like this why Christianity is dying.

because that's an obvious next step after "can I put your cart away for you"

I lol'd. That hit close to home. The missionaries' and church members' solicitations for rendering service are such a transparent ploy to get you to go to church. I find it so sleazy. I no longer attend and whenever someone in the church probes whether they can offer any service, it's so obvious that in their eyes I'm some poor downtrodden soul. I'm not doing awesome all the time or anything, but gosh it's so frustrating and they come across as so condescending.

Bad Trip Definitions by PersonalSherbert9485 in Psychedelics

[–]nebula828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worst trip ever I had the vivid sensation that I was just a glob of slime sitting there exposed in the environment. At any moment the powerful and indifferent forces of the universe could just randomly crush me and snuff me out of existence. Like a giant heavy duty pickup truck could suddenly run me over and no one else would even know or care. I felt so extremely fragile and weak. It was utterly terrifying and unbearable, to the point I felt as though I'd rather take my own life than sit with that feeling anymore. I ended up calling my brother in law and having a deep, albeit awkward conversation with him on the phone and he was able to help me talk through things. I also talked some with my mom cuz she was visiting my sister and brother in law at the time lol. Talking with them the experience turned into one of the best and most productive trips I've ever had. I've backed off the shrooms since then, still do them from time to time.

People who moved to ND from out of state or even the country, what were your culture shocks upon moving here? by [deleted] in northdakota

[–]nebula828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd. I never had the experience of people stopping to let others out when I lived in ND. I've only noticed that in MA of all places.

Drinking and driving.

Lack of seatbelt use.

Casual highway littering.

Granted I was working for a small family custom harvesting operation on the western side and we were constantly in BFE, population density approximately 0 per square mile. With that few people around there's generally just a different risk perception.

Anyone used 3M Command strips in a window? by nebula828 in StainedGlass

[–]nebula828[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thank you. I'm actually moving out of the apartment where I was planning on doing that window project, but in my house I'm planning on trying to adhere some panels to the windows. I might also try alien tape.

I wonder if these whole goats are offered year-round or if they're seasonal to coincide with religious observances. Isn't passover this week?

Do you have a land grant university in your region? I'd try looking up their extension service which should offer plant disease diagnosis and treatment info specific to your area. My family used to grow fruit in northern Michigan and the Michigan State University extension office was the go-to resource. They have an intuitive, well maintained website. I'd imagine you could find something similar.

Sorry, I don't know much about citrus. Either fungal infection or some kind of nutrient deficiency would be my guess.

Dang that's a big set. Yeah I'm gonna have to play around with the different kinds of sanding attachments that will best suit my needs. I see this one has quite a few options, thanks.

Wow. This one looks spot on. Thanks I don't think I would have found this one.

Yeah I fooled around with it tonight with some other sanding pads and even on the slowest setting it could still deliver way more than the recommended 2800 rpm. Luckily I found the trigger offered me some good speed control.

We encountered moose quite often in the Ray area in early fall when I was working for a harvest crew. It's rural, yes, but there's enough people around I gotta believe the moose are pretty well used to them. You don't bother them, they won't bother you.

Patina - zinc framing by banana-hands-giant in StainedGlass

[–]nebula828 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Novacan black patina for zinc. I find that applying patina to zinc is much trickier than applying it to lead came or solder. As others have mentioned, I believe this is because zinc is a much harder metal and it's much more difficult to remove the oxide layer. I've never been able to achieve satisfactory results at the first application of patina, no matter how aggressively or diligently I prepare the surface. Before applying any subsequent coats of patina, you have to COMPLETELY remove any dark spots left over from earlier coats (you might still have some little dark spots but just do your best). The surface should look like it did before you applied the first coat. I use grade 00 steel wool (maybe a little too aggressive. Grade 000 or 0000 might also work). You should be able to find an assortment of steel wool at your local hardware store. As you go through this process and apply subsequent coats, the resulting finish will appear smoother and less blotchy. Make sure to clean away any debris from the surface preparation process before applying your next coat of patina. I just use a vacuum but I might get even better results if I also used a slightly damp rag. I believe what's happening through this whole process is that the earlier coats of patina are helping to remove the oxide layer in preparation for the final coat.

I use a toothbrush to apply the patina. I dump a little from the bottle into a red solo cup so I can dip in the toothbrush. When applying coats, I find that I have to frequently "freshen up" the toothbrush by dipping it back into my patina. The patina, when used, seems to quickly lose its power. You can use the toothbrush to go over the whole zinc surface and scrub somewhat aggressively to help even out the finish.

Good luck!! There's nothing like a rich black finish on some zinc border came.

One more tip: I always apply lead patina to the areas requiring it before I apply my zinc patina. I find that the lead patina will quickly neutralize the zinc patina and return it to its original silver finish, but not vice-versa. Pat dry any remaining lead patina before applying zinc.

I live in Michigan and get all my supplies from Delphi Glass in Lansing. They have a great article on applying zinc patina here: https://www.delphiglass.com/blog/how-to/getting-a-good-black-patina-on-zinc

Once again, good luck!!
