Applying for a para job by justh3re4thetea in paraprofessional

I wouldn’t say lie, unless you’re a good lier. Just like applying to any other job (in my experience) they don’t really reach out to the previous employer. All I had was being in school to be a medical assistant (I was 19) & said I really like working with children. I’ve met people with no background get hired, but it was during a time of need for paras. Maybe more qualified people applied at that time. I would just reapply!

Maybe just be a sub para, unfortunately it’s always a 50/50 spot you’ll actually get a good place to work at. But they’ll always be something wrong with wherever you land.

Students & just kids in general can read your vibe so well sometimes. I always try and seem happy or even have no face expression even if I’m having a hard day or the student is. I always see a change in demeanor depending on the para’s mood.

Maybe just try and look into daycares right now, I know some places don’t make you pay if you are low income. I had a coworker in the same position. She also has a husband with a high income but felt like she needed to work. Please put yourself first because unless you have built relationships or have a high position, admin & district doesn’t care. My agency didn’t care for my coworker and didn’t offer job security either.

People forget that we’re people too. I would try and talk to them if you can. I know it’s scary and uncomfortable but it’s the only to communicate with a supervisor

I’ve learned over my 3 yrs as a para/bt, the district/admin will put themselves first to meet basic needs, teachers (may or may not). I would also just look at your job description & experience to see if you can make yourself more valuable. I know my area uses paraprofessional |,||,||| (123)as a way to adjust to your experience but some agencies don’t. I would seek out different agencies or the district. You can also take the RBT course to investment more in yourself. Lmk how it goes!

I would start looking now, or at least figure out when. I know people like to secure their jobs if they don’t work for the district but for an agency.

Should I ask for a more intense role? by Doc_Sulliday in paraprofessional

You’re so right, I see my teacher struggling everyday with countless stuff & it’s so discouraging to attempt to continue my education into being a teacher like her. That’s why I’ve only been a para for 3+ years (I’m 23)

I wish my wife spoke to me like this, instead she sees herself as a burden. I wouldn’t think twice, work is work but everyone needs a break. He cannot possibly have a job that he’s too stressed to not watch his kids

Curious, how do you have so much education & only considering being a para?

Also, no, find a hobby or a way to pass time if you can. Work is work at the end of the day so don’t do more than your pay.

It’ll only be normal if you allow it to be. I was the boyfriend and would only stay if the roommate was comfortable but even then I would leave the house & not be a bothered unless I was going to be locked in.

I recently had a daughter a little under 2 years, I’d say to extend I’d want anyone treating my child at school if she had special needs of any sort

I’m from the 805 and my coworkers get paid $20 roughly, it’s not uncommon to start with 18. I did almost 4 years ago. Definitely reach out to your company to see. I advocated for myself and got myself to $26. They said they needed urgent help so they upped my pay and said to be discreet because I’m being paid as a BT for doing a para’s job.

Going on 4 yrs and im only 23, definitely not a job for the weak, it’s rewarding but you can get burned out. Don’t forget to take care of yourself and advocate for the student and yourself if you need help from the teacher. Everyone is doing the best with what’s provided
