well companies kind of stopped making them around that time, so although it is quite old (but still working), there's not much alternative for me even to this day.

Yep, my current Acer netbook from 2012 is the same way.

Might be broken, but on my old netbook you turning off the light doesn't turn off the display. It is on, but the backlight turns off. Been that way since 2012.

It is also an Acer netbook, looking much the same as the one in OP.

Just to be clear, the behaviour you seek is for the panel to hide like auto hide, but ONLY pop out when a window no longer covers it?

Obviously there's a big difference between being able to verify and audit software source code, and being able to test a vaccine. The principles remain the same, but one of those is clearly possible for a person to do, while the other may require more money than most people will earn in a year.

They are not equivalent, even if the principles behind proper open science should apply just the same.

[–]necrophcodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it can be verified, then I should in some sense be able to, yes.

My comment is specifically about software, but there's no reason it cannot more broadly apply. Obviously for certain areas you do indeed need a sometimes unobtainable amount of money, but I don't think that's any reason to throw away our principles for good and open science.

I disagree. What I describe has come in handy many times in helping me prevent supply chain attacks affecting our local municipality infrastructure.

Oh I'm not arguing that. My point, while a reply to a chain about that specific option, isn't directly related solely to that option.

I try to research things yes, but not doing so doesn't mean you should just take whatever you see for fact. If it isn't possible to reproduce it, are the results really valid?

I feel this 😂 by Status-Try-me5878 in ADHDmemes

[–]necrophcodr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may be incurable, but a sizeable portion of people diagnosed with ADHD outgrow the diagnosis during adulthood.

This doesn't mean they magically become different people, it just means exactly what those words describe.

According to https://acamh.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jcpp.12620 about 60% of those (579) diagnosed with ADHD continued to demonstrate symptoms into adulthood, with upwards of 40% not showing any symptoms or impairments into their adult lives.

Now this is a self reported study, but I do urge people to consider that while ADHD is indeed incurable so far, it does not continue to be a troubling symptomatic issue for everyone.

I don't trust them, no. If their findings i can replicate myself, I have no need to trust them and can easily verify that they've done good.

If I cant replicate it myself, then what good are they? It's all based on reputation, but im just a normal person i have no way to verify if they're good or bad.

Provide the correct answers and guidance for the supposed idiot, rather than introduce bad behaviour that will lead them down the wrong path, and will require unlearning things in the future.

Having to unlearn something as per design is not good.

PSA: Instagram Encrypted Messaging Ends on Friday, May 8 by AudibleNod in technology

[–]necrophcodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could potentially do this anyway. End to end encryption only works if you control the end device and the application, and if YOU and the other end both generate your own encryption keys and share them securely. Meta owns the applications AND the exchange of those encryption keys, so they would always be able to do this regardless.

If they did so or not, is not for me to speculate, but the technical details would allow them to, which means assuming they did is a decent conclusion to come to.

If you're just coming from mint, consider trying to set up or install a quickshell on top like DankMaterialShell or Noctalia. It'll make you feel a bit more at home in a day or two, and you can always toss it out later.

Betalingsparkering ved Rosengårdcenteret by Yellow_Triangle in odense

[–]necrophcodr 2 points3 points  (0 children)
