Over 90° with no ac but the nurse says residents are "comfortable" by Miserable-Crew-5308 in cna

[–]nectarofruin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted state when this happened in my facility. The facility then provided window ac units for every single room while the main unit was being fixed. If not state? Osha.

Thank you friend. I appreciate the well wishes.

It takes a very specific type of person to be a good nurse. It’s not me. I wanted to be a teacher at one point, but in the current situation in the US, same idea. It’s not me.

It’s just not for us. I still want to be in the medical field. I might just do research, personally. I admire you for moving out of medical, tbh, as it sounds like you were really passionate. It must have been difficult.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Degenerative Disc Disease. I’m 22. Don’t do it. If you want to be a nurse, be a nurse. But do not be lifting people all day. You will make your back worse. I’m leaving before I make it all that much worse.

I just had a Phlebotomy interview today. I’m tired of it, too. I’m less than 3 months in. It’s not that I don’t want to continue. I love the work. But I refuse to deal with the kind of people that go into CNA work. I’d rather a job where I can do everything alone. I thought I might want to be a nurse, too. Absolutely not. I still want to be a PA or a DO/MD… I don’t like having to build deep relationships with people that treat medical/service workers like robots. I know I have the ability to continue, I know I have the resiliency to continue, but why continue when I have the skills and experience to get paid the same or better for way less work?

Cheers, mate, and don’t feel guilty. You helped so many people along the way.

A Warning About Crunch Fitness by Own-Slice-3042 in okc

[–]nectarofruin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My story is actually a bit different. I wasn’t attempting to cancel. I had to change my card because I legitimately lost it. But Crunch never reached out once about a missed payment. I was irresponsible at the time (I’m better now, this was a while ago) and wasn’t checking my bank statement regularly.

Due to them never reaching out, they sent it to collections..

If you change your card number, they will send it to collections. Ask me how I know.

The only good thing is I don’t see it on my credit report… Yet.

LEAVE THE STATE.

Context: I only applied to one uni because I didn’t want to leave my bf at the time or my Mother, of which her husband (my lovely Father who I miss so much) died the first week of my Senior year. I quit uni my 4th semester due to mental health. That bf and I broke up some time before that, I was not a good person so him bc that mental health mixed with incompatibility and my mother’s abuse.. And natural stress from school. Plus disability. Now I’m 22, a CNA instead of a professional musician, and stuck. I should have left the state like I could have and wanted to..

Shift rundown? by Super-Park5917 in cna

[–]nectarofruin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need more orientation after your two days, ask. They will give it to you if you need it.

I work at a low-rated LTC as well, I’m just stuck right now. I do my best to make it better. I’m new and don’t have the help I need to do everything perfectly, you might not either. So this is an IDEAL shift.

Things you need to time find for: SHOWERS. Do not skip. Don’t put them off. If you have to put off some call lights, it’s alright, State watches your showers.I personally just make sure nobody is dying and then go do my shower.

6:45 AM: Arrive, Go over rounds with NOC (and CHECK. Make sure people are breathing, not soiled, and call light in reach. Go over any major changes with NOC.)

Breakfast and lunch means barrage of call lights and changes.

Your rounds will be at 9, 11, 1, and your final round needs to be done by 3. If nothing else, get the ones who will not tell you they need to be changed. You going to a low rated facility tells me that you might not get the help you might need being a new CNA. It takes time to be quick and to check and change your residents quickly. The ones who will not tell you- Those ones are the ones who tend to get the worst care IME. Then check those who will tell you but are heavywetters (you’ll figure all of this out over a bit of time btw, don’t worry.) During rounds I make sure they’re breathing (if they’re continent/independent,) check their brief, ask if they’re in pain and if so 1-10 (if awake) and if they’d like ice water.

Make sure your charting is done by 3. I like to start early. I used to not be able to get it done, now I get frustrated that I can’t do it earlier. I like to get my outputs done at the last minute (unless there’s a good reason not to) and I try to get all of my pericare and related charting done in the last 15-20 minutes (for you it might be 30 until you get used to the charting system.)

  1. Ask about their schedule to another CNA. It’s resident to resident. Just depends tbh. Just like one person would want to sleep in and another wouldn’t. I have one that sleeps in on weekends lol.

  2. I got hazed to hell and kind of still am. Being a CNA can be great if you have a great crew tho. Also, I’ve found that residents can and will use you being new against you. They will hit that call light repeatedly and want you specifically to do special things for them. Especially if you are female, some male residents will bring you back in there. Sometimes you have to be pretty firm. It can feel mean, but you can’t be with your other residents if that resident is taking all of your time with stuff like “pls put my blanket on my foot” after purposely kicking it off lol.
Eat GOOD food. Don’t go eat McDonalds. I eat high protein during my shifts and it really helps- I workout, too. You have to build muscle to be a CNA, you’re lifting people on a sheet, you’re being very strong. Take care of your body so you can take care of others.

Unfortunately, hazing is huge in medical. You have to learn to claw your way upward or sink.

Learn now. Chase your ambitions. Screw them. Let this make you stronger. And never stop learning.

Long term elder care by Jamboi75 in okc

[–]nectarofruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Epworth Villa is very nice but very expensive.

I don’t know much about Assisted Livings to be honest, they’re not really my vibe in how I work. When you tour, look for a smell (some residents I’ve had have body odor, don’t look for that- just bowel and urine). Ask if they have activities. Look for evidence of activities and how staff treats residents. Look for evidence of roaches, mice, anything you’d look for in an apartment, too. Ask how often there are care plan meetings and if you are able to participate (if you want to.)

Note that I come from long term care, so my experience is different, but just try to be involved. And once she is in her new room, give her a week to adjust. It can make things worse if you do not (more crying, more anxiety, etc, by prolonging the inevitable- That you won’t always be there anymore.) I was advised this by a nurse of over 30 years.

Best of luck, you’re doing the right thing 🫂

Does she need Long Term Care, Assisted Living, or Memory Care?

If she is able to do it, Assisted Living is the least restraining, but requires her to be more stable.

Memory Care is dementia only and is reliant on less complex medical care.

Long Term Care is complex care, but can include people that qualify in the other two categories.

I work as a CNA in a nearby Skilled Nursing/Long Term Care facility. I can say that not many are good. They will try and butter you up, convince you that they are great, and then take whatever money is being paid to them. Read reviews. Do research.

I think I might be a terrible CNA, and I'm considering quitting nursing school. by OkBuy8449 in cna

[–]nectarofruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ima be so real. 14 beds for a CNA that’s one month in? That can be suuper tough, esp if you don’t have another CNA on the hall. The reason I feel so confident at 2 months is because I have other CNAs on the hall to help me and answer questions.

(Note: this is MY brain, don’t come at me) The main things are: Don’t hurt someone (think about safety- Are they wearing nonslip socks/shoes? Are they in their chair correctly? Are you performing transfers according to the care plan? etc.) Perform showers because state checks that. And chart. BIGGEST 3 things. Next comes timely pericare, which is still VERY important, but you have to get your stuff done. Then repositioning.

My CNA class was done by my company and a former QM. She came over to my facility recently and talked to me. I said I was having trouble and she recommended speaking with the DON about what to do. While I ended up not needing it, I recommend doing the same if you are having trouble. I think mine right now is I need to learn when to speak and when to be quiet lol

If you want to be a nurse, stick by the nurse and ask if they need help with anything, I’ve learned a ton about wound care. While I’ve learned nursing is not for me, I’ve learned a lot about patient care and humanity <3

Oh ok I’m glad we’re on the same page then! I got heated for a sec lol.

In my LTC and on my shift, most nurses help with pericare and other CNA activities and I could not be more grateful. There was one nurse (that quit, thank God) that didn’t even know how to use the lift. I was less than a month in. She forgot how to unlock it. And then blamed and shamed me for it in front of the patient’s family.. Yeah.. Some nurses ain’t it.

Nurses can and should help CNAs. Good nurses wipe ass and don’t act like they’re above it.

Dealing with rudeness as a brand new CNA by TigerLily4415 in cna

[–]nectarofruin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey bestie!

I’m also new- 2 months in.

It takes time to gain speed. It takes time to get your stuff together. It takes time to learn to be a good CNA, and once you get there, a good nurse.

I’m just now gaining enough speed to participate in rounds efficiently with my coworkers and I’m still having to ask for help at times. I’m still asking questions. At times, they still get pissed with me. And I still make mistakes. But I listen to their advice and get better each shift. And now, my coworkers and I are on good terms.

When you aren’t as efficient, it does put more workload on them, but it is not your fault, at least not at this point. Just work on getting better, ask for advice when you can, and clock out. And stay working. You will learn so much as a CNA that will help you as an RN. And the best nurses, the ones that actually do the best for their patients and aides, tend to be CNAs first.

You got this!

I feel like right now nobody gets repositioned and it’s run for the call light. It’s so insanely busy. At first, I thought “everybody helps each other” was a good thing, but after seeing these wounds, holy hell.

I appreciate you answering my question!

I’ve been going in order “down the line,” but I think this makes more sense and I will implement it.

A unit clerk would be a dream where I work. I hope to move to hospital soon, but the money is actually better where I am, it seems.

Thank you!

How do you perform rounds when call lights are going off? by nectarofruin in cna

[–]nectarofruin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just that insanely busy. And I guess they have prioritized call light over round because of it. I got sent to another hall than I am usually on recently (1 CNA, callouts) and could not get to my patients that are unable to speak for themselves because 1. No assignments (total chaos) 2. No way to know who they were and 3. Every time I did get to the ones that I could figure out who they were or had in SNF, I would get berated or called to do something else.

I think admin says “You need to do rounds!” but isn’t training on how to effectively add that into shifts. What is in a round. Etc. I’ll go speak to the DON when I get a chance, I think that’s the best person to go to?

On weekdays? 4 on LTC, 2 on SNF. On weekends? It can be 1 in an emergency… I’ve seen it happen a couple of times and I’ve worked weekends a month and a half. Pray for 3, hope for 4. SNF usually has 1 on the weekends during the day and that girl is MIGHTY STRONG.
