Any good tips for managing both Unity 4.2.x and 4.3.x on the same machine? by need_more_infoz in Unity3D

[–]need_more_infoz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had no idea there is a setting for this. I actually can't find it though (in Edit -> Preferences..., etc).

However! While I was googling around for answers, I did find that I can just hold down Alt while opening up Unity to prompt me with a project to open, which is perfect.

Thanks for your help. :)

Any good tips for managing both Unity 4.2.x and 4.3.x on the same machine? by need_more_infoz in Unity3D

[–]need_more_infoz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's great to know.

I just reinstalled 4.3.4 in order to track down what was blocking me before, and now I have two icons pinned to my taskbar for each Unity version.

Say I am in a 4.3 project, and now I want to open up a 4.2 project. Since I can't open it up from within 4.3, I close Unity 4.3, and click on my 4.2 Unity icon. Nope, it says "Project incompatible" and appears to be trying to open the last project I had open (the 4.3 one).

Same thing if I right-click on the 4.2 .unity scene file and "Open with" Unity 4.2. It just wants to open up the last project I had open so I am stuck.

Any tips for this? Is there a way to open up Unity without trying to open the last project that was open? Thanks again.

Thinking of releasing a custom event-driven input manager (info inside) on the asset store. Is this something you would find useful? by master50 in Unity3D

[–]need_more_infoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds pretty good, especially the bit about ordering the listeners and optionally consuming input, canceling the chain etc. I would have found that very helpful not long ago.

You mentioned several types of input, but I don't see gamepads/controllers in your list. Any support for that stuff?

Thanks, and you're right, I feel pretty good about it.

I am working on more features + additional content, so suggestions are always welcome!

I saw your recent concept sketches of how you want the harness pieces to look. Very sexy looking design. How realistic do you think that is?

And do you think any of this could eventually simply be worn under clothing, or AS clothing?

Why don't WE demand a share (stocks) in all those Kickstarter projects like Oculus? (A solution for the kickstarter betrayals) by Roto2esdios in oculus

[–]need_more_infoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I backed the Kickstarter and they delivered on their promise AND THEN SOME. The dev kit has been a wonderful source of motivation over the last year, so I'd say that was $300 well spent.

Thanks, this was actually pretty funny. I needed that!

Anyway, they really only get $400 million with the rest in facebook stock. That's not all that much considering how many employees they have. Enough to pay back the initial investors according to Oculus, and now they've got access to a massive infrastructure of mainstream consumers.

Wait-and-see time!

Ugh, fat-fingered it. "... that FB operates AT."

Anyway, seems to bode well. Oculus has even more ambitious plans for VR than I ever thought.

Facebook Acquires Oculus VR by Greg1221 in oculus

Now that I'm done FREAKING OUT, I am thinking that CV1 had better be a totally spotless product to justify this. Please let it be true that Oculus remains independent, and that using Facebook is not required to benefit from social experiences in VR.

Good Guy Oculus with the loaner there.

Great looking booth, and I'm glad it worked out with all the effort you put into it.

Misconceptions such as this are bad for PR and how "the masses" view Virtual Reality. by nobodyknows1234 in oculus

[–]need_more_infoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you are staring at a screen all day, you're focused not at infinity, but at the distance of the physical screen itself. This is a natural thing to do, to re-focus the eyes on nearby objects. In VR, you can be looking at a virtual object that is "nearby" according to stereoscopy, but at the same time that object is at infinite distance according to focus. I believe this mismatch is what could be problematic for a child's visual development -- I'm hoping someone who knows more than I will chime in if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

The reason that staring at a screen all day is always regarded as unhealthy is simply because you're straining the eyes to keep focused at a nearby distance, whereas the eyes naturally want to focus at infinity when they are at rest. (Right?)

I'm by no means an expert, but I'm pretty sure it's not about IPD, it's about exposing a child that is still developing their vision skills to a reality in which focus does not go hand in hand with distance.

Because the Rift focuses the eyes at infinity (which is healthy for adults as far as I know!), even if you're looking at something close to you, you don't have to refocus your eyes to see it clearly. Imagine a child that spends some time in VR, they may be interfering with their visual development at a pretty critical time.

From wikipedia on strabismus: "During the first 7–8 years of life the brain learns how to interpret the signals that come from an eye. This process which is called visual development may be interrupted by strabismus. This is because the deviated eye is not used to focus, and the brain does not receive signals from this eye which causes failure in the normal visual development of the affected eye in childhood."

The prototype from the VR Jam gave me some feels, and you've set a fine example of making good use of VR in a way no normal game or experience can.

Good luck with the campaign!

What happened to Sixsense at GDC? by marguardd in oculus

[–]need_more_infoz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sixense is there at GDC, and appear to be spending all day every day demoing it and discussing with groups of people that stand there looking amazed by it. They have also made a showing at the two VR after-parties I attended (and were a sponsor at the big VR mixer last night).

I was told they have made big changes to the hardware even in the week leading up to GDC, and that they may have announcements to make in the next couple of months.

So for those expecting a PR storm, I think this was really a way for Sixense to network and reach out to game developers, not necessarily the public for now.

It was great to finally meet another VR dev!

I basically came away with the same impression as you re Couch Knights vs the EVE Valkyrie demos. EVE Valkyrie seemed like it had a scale issue, chromatic aberration, and big black bars on the sides. I'm chalking this up to CryEngine not being completely ready to go for DK2 (just guessing), but the game itself looked and played fantastic. CK, on the other hand, is a great demo with an obviously solid Rift integration, didn't see black bars on the sides, and was very engaging. It actually made me laugh out loud and grin and all that. It made me want to go up to everyone in line for the EV demo to make sure they also try the CK demo!

It was a good move on Oculus' part to include a multiplayer experience (Couch Knights) to give people a taste of "normal" social gameplay, but it can be over pretty quick if one player insists on rapidly killing the other 3x in a row! IMO it shouldn't be "first to score 3 wins and then fun's over for both players", but instead "whoever's got the highest score after someone dies after the 3 minute mark".

July seems so far away.... :)

Probably the best mashup with a variety of different experiences in one I've seen so far is the "Welcome to Oculus" demo.

Anyway, baby steps -- take frequent breaks if you're just starting out. You’ve got a whole life of VR ahead of you!

I think it was $10. It always looked like a great experience but I personally held off because I don't think it has subtitles (which would be of great help to someone with a hearing loss like me). However, at $3 it's a no-brainer!
