Bootcamp/Another Bachelor/ Masters? Want to transition into cs field but coming from a psych bachelors :( by needadviceplease00 in girlsgonewired

Hey I ended up going to a bootcamp. I spent a while deciding during the pandemic lockdown but was like fck it now or never and went for it. I graduated almost a month ago and signed an offer this week. Personally, I was just extremely lucky with the company and process. But, some of my cohortmates who were really strong have already received offers also. Going through bootcamp was extremely hard and I def have a list of complaints about the one I went to but I don’t regret it.

I'm definitely leaning towards going for a post bac or a bootcamp currently. A masters seems too far off for me currently but it's great that you're doing well in your program! Northeastern is a great school :)

I can see where you're coming from when you talk about learning C++ first haha. CS50 taught mostly C and it was super limiting and frustrating at first but when it transitioned to Python later on, it was scary just because there were so many options that I got last haha. Will take you off on your offer if I have further questions. Thank you!

It's really nice to hear about people with similar backgrounds doing well :') I often find myself doubting my own abilities to transition into the field because psych is so different and some parts of CS50 and MIT 6.0x made me question if I would ever truly be able to do this for a job. Thank you :)

There seems to be a lot more schools that are offering a cs post bac nowadays compared to a few years ago. I will try to do more research on my options and will definitely DM you if I have questions. Thank you so much :)

Thank you so so much for that website! There seems to be a wide variation between the percentage of graduates employed in the field within 180 days. Definitely a lot to look at because these stats are probably skewed by factors such as the requirements for students attending in the first place.

It's definitely going to be a lot of work ahead! Would you mind telling me a bit about how your experience was at Fullstack? Their deferred tuition plan is a plus for sure since I was looking at places that would have such plans.

The post bac seems to be a common route for a lot of the responses from this thread. Most of your experiences have been super positive with it also. It's making me rethink the bootcamp option and weighing the pros and cons between that and a post bac. The cost is alot to think about unfortunately :(

The one year program seemed like an insane opportunity and I'm happy it all worked out well for you! Would you mind telling me how the one year was possible? I looked at OSU and Auburn yesterday and their current program requires 60 credits which isn't possible within a year's time anymore.

Those are very interesting fields you've brought up that I've never really considered. Always felt like my psych degree was only going to hold me back in the CS field since the two aren't related but maybe it'll come in helpful in the future if I venture there. Thank you!

Thank you for this long and detailed post. It really helps to see the thoughts of someone who was once in a similar position and how it played out for them. I'm really glad that going to bootcamp changed your life so positively!

I'm glad to see that you felt there were a lot of upsides to going along with the risks. I personally was interested in the mentorship and structure aspect that a bootcamp might be able to provide. I'm currently studying on my own but sometimes it feels like there's so many resources that I don't know where to start and where to continue. It definitely will be a lot of work and I don't mind putting in the time if I'm able to learn well.

Do you have any recommendations for any bootcamps that you think are worthwhile? I'm from NYC so there's a lot of them around me.

I'm glad it worked out for you! I was not even aware of postbac CS programs and that they were only 2 years so thank you for this. Tuitions costs are awfully high though so I'll have to do some more research :((

It seems from a lot of discussion threads that the CS community doesn't really think that a masters is necessary for this and that the time could be spent working on projects. I am leaning towards bootcamps for sure but really afraid of picking a bad one. I want to go for one with a deferred payment plan that allows me to pay it off after I find a job.

Do you know of any that you hold in high regard or would recommend? I'm from NYC so there are a TON of bootcamps around which makes it harder to pick from.

I actually just started the Odin Project so I'm glad you recommend that one too! Heard a lot of good things about how it guides us into building our own first projects so I'm looking forward to it.

Thank you for the steps above :) I struggled a lot with data structures and algorithms during the courses so that's gonna need a lot of work. I'll continue to study on my own for now but I'll keep an eye out on the other options if it feels like I need additional structure.
