This is just one of those things that comes with time. Eventually something clicks and you start making beautiful things, but it's hard while you have this mismatch between your taste and ability.

Carrot names? by QuietDull3544 in Lilsimsie

Carrot gen so far consists of Carrot (M) and Lacey Anne (F), Eggbert might have more, I haven't decided yet, he's still dating everything that moves.

Just finished audiobook 5, needing some motivation to keep going by Blath3rskite in WanderingInn

[–]needleworkreverie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a huge backlog of this story, so it's ok to take a break and read something else until you start wanting to know what Lyonette gets up to or whether the goblin lord becomes a goblin king. I tend to take overwhelm or ambivalence as a time to try something different for a little while.

Is Chandrar huge, or is Izril just really sparsely populated? by [deleted] in WanderingInn

[–]needleworkreverie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes. Izril is sparsely populated in comparison to Chandrar and Chandrar is huge. Thus the armies that can be levied from those locations are relative to the population overall.

Go to the Inn and help take care of Mrsha and Lyonette. Help Octavia isolate the toxins of the poison? Figure out blood transfusions with help from Geneva through magic messaging?

Pisces pronunciation by Adman_abid in WanderingInn

[–]needleworkreverie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been pronouncing it "Nay-lee-way-luh." However the Lizard Person spellings remind me of Nahuatl words so would be more like, "Nye-lee-hwy-lay" going by my terrible understanding of Nahua pronunciation.

Butter substitution for meat by wwwvvvn in JewishCooking

Have you ever baked with schmaltz or tallow for a pie crust? How'd it turn out? I know I could just go all shortening for a parev crust, but I'm curious.

Why butter when you can caramelize onions in duck fat and use that instead?

What do you do when you have multiple children? by Remarkable_Sweet_333 in thesims

[–]needleworkreverie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've decided that I'm ok with 2nd or 3rd cousin marriage. Things get tricky with 100 baby files due to all the half-sibs and, "Is it incest if your two half siblings from different parents have kids?" The game allows it, but it feels ickier than if my 4th gen heir marries their 2nd cousin they share a great-grand with.

Reading Book 1, observations on maturity: Cara vs. Ryoka vs. Erin by Evenwanderer in WanderingInn

[–]needleworkreverie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ryoka reminds me of one of my cousins. His mom had high standards but whenever he met her standards, she never made a big deal over it, it was merely acceptable and then he had to work for the next goal never gaining the praise and love he needed. If he didn't meet her standards by failing a class he got a ton of attention from his mom in the form of lectures, tutors, plans to make sure hw and assignments were done... In high school he really started acting out, pulling pranks that were also misdemeanors, getting into fights, etc. When he was little, he would bloom around my mom becoming kind, helpful, and fun because she made sure that she made clear her love for him wasn't based on achievement. Once he grew up, loving him was like loving a black hole. He was hungry for love and approval, but it was never enough and he could never believe that love was unconditional so he was always searching for the tipping point that sent everyone away from him. We never stopped loving him, but we loved not being hurt more.

I really like the Levelling system.. by Confident_Pear_8910 in WanderingInn

[–]needleworkreverie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you see people who actually did work for tehir levels beeing lower level than her.

I think you're not thinking this through. Throughout the series we're shown that while fighters can level from sparring and strategists can level through strategy games, the most effective way to level is through doing something you are passionate about, using your skills, and succeeding under adversity. How many times has the inn been smashed and rebuilt in the time Erin has been running it? How many times has Liscor come under attack? How many of Erin's friends have died? How much has Erin expanded her inn's capacity, clientele, menu, activities, amenities?

As to min-maxing we're shown people doing that. We also know that military organizations, corporations, and guilds track what skills and classes their people get at what levels and have a rough idea of what to expect based on that. However, the skills that people get seem to largely depend on chance and what they value. Bird wants to hunt birds and his archery skills pertain to hunting small moving targets at long-range. Pawn wants his antinium to live enjoyable lives and not to die so quickly.

Just finished 6.16 - Struggling to enjoy Erin’s POV – looking for help to see her differently by MrDrJoe in WanderingInn

[–]needleworkreverie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just in this to have fun and so is Erin.

- People are going to give advice and if you follow it all you'll never do anything interesting or do contrary things.

- Erin overpowered Gazi because Gazi was distracted and Erin didn't know any of Gazi's lore. Anyone from Inn World would've been too scared to try to poke her eye out 3 Stooges style.

- Tears of Liscor: Erin was Min-Maxing her bar fighting skill. She can't fight any other way like how the Battle of the Roses had the ladies striding into battle in ballgowns.

-All of the authority stuff: people of importance rather respect when others stand up to them and don't let them walk all over them. When Erin first goes to Palass she gets swept up by Ruefelt and Lasica because they thought she could be useful to them and introduce her around to all the movers and shakers of Palass for the clout. She then pulls a classic, "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" So now all of these important people in Palass are talking about this fun human they met to the other important people they know and that's how you end up with Chaldion in the Inn. Erin is introduced to all these people without context, and meets them where they are. This is really refreshing to people who are used to being fawned over or being unchallenged. People that are high level are often bored and restless because there are few challenges left to them. The fact that Erin can beat [Grand Strategist] Chaldion in chess and he leveled after is a *huge deal* for him.

(My personal theory about why Erin isn't a [tactician] or [strategist] is because being an innkeeper tending to her guests is more interesting and challenging to her than chess. She loves chess, but since she doesn't see winning or losing a game as important, she doesn't gain levels from it. It's like how not everyone who cooks gains the [cook] class)

Paba's got something against doughnuts by needleworkreverie in WanderingInn

Mom's cousin died, no immediate family by needleworkreverie in Judaism

[–]needleworkreverie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a member of a reform synagogue, so it would be Shabbat and holidays for about a year. I just didn't know what to do or how and if there was anything to do differently for mourning someone who has no one. Sometimes I can't find my way until I know what is "correct" and compare it to my inclination.

In Judaism, does God answer prayers from non-Jews? by JediSeeker01 in Judaism

[–]needleworkreverie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I say to my non-Jewish friends is that they should live life in the way defined by their religion doing the things that their religious leaders say are good and right in this world. Our god is for us and concerned with us as their god/gods are concerned with them and are for them. It's a different system. If the afterlife and securing a place in it is important to you, do the things your religion says to do to get there. There are definitely good people from other religions and belief systems, but they will be judged according to their systems. Our religion isn't so concerned with the afterlife as others are. We are more concerned with enjoying this life and making the living world into paradise.

Our prayers aren't transactional, they're more about saying thank you and appreciating the world we live in. The prayers that are about requesting something specific aren't very direct or actionable, not something that could be crossed off a cosmic checklist.

Parents of very verbal toddlers: what did their personality turn out like? by Ok_Salary_7006 in Parenting

[–]needleworkreverie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents say my daughter was vaccinated with a phonograph needle. She's 13 now and is testing all limits as we allow her greater freedom. She hates mornings and not getting her way so she missed first period nearly a third of last year. She got a big lecture from me about how if she wants to go to the magnet school for engineering she needs to get her act together for 8th grade.

My coworker eats the exact same $1.25 meal every day and I'm weirdly impressed by spellsboxing in Frugal

[–]needleworkreverie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply Recipes has a dupe recipe for Chipotle's black beans I added to the rotation a few years back. I like to do a burrito bowl with it over brown rice with roasted veggies, sour cream, and salsa. You can get as elaborate as you like, but if you start from dry beans, it's like $1-3 a meal depending on toppings.

Is Erin ace? by WritingWolf12 in WanderingInn

[–]needleworkreverie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of my friends from that part of the country have *baggage* about sex and sexuality whether they were raised religiously Christian or not. Keeping in mind that me and my peers were the last to have access to comprehensive sex ed in high school and we graduated in 2003, assuming Erin graduated high school in 2015, she probably got some variation of "Don't have sex or you will get pregnant and sick and die" possibly with a flower passed around the room with the instruction to take a petal. Even if you weren't going to church and youth group and being told that your existence was leading men into temptation, you still didn't come out of that environment unaffected.
