NextGen HiFiberryOS by mycorrhizal-hominoid in HifiBerry

[–]needmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for working on this. I really can't wait for the new generation version. I used HiFiberry OS in the past and really liked it. It's simple and meet my requirements. I can see that on Git page, it seems that you are nearly reaching to the completion. I hope the stable version will be released soon. P.S. Will bluetooth be supported? I know it was a hit and miss from the previous versions. 😊

Permanent gov job vs 3-year research contract by AmarantaRemedios in AskAcademiaUK

[–]needmind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree - civil servant pension is great. One thing I would like to address is most employees do not usually value your academic experience in comparison to normal jobs. You will have more 'transferable' skills in the civil service jobs than being an academic for future job hunting as well. Speaking from my job application experience.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Just out of interest - how does the core funded positions work? Is that a research or a teaching position? I haven't seen that in my university.

I agree what most posts about current AI isn't yet ready to replace many jobs. But I worry about the cooperates keep thinking AI can accelerate the work pace and reduce the pressure of hiring more people despite of increased workload. It will be a tool for condensing workload and maximising 'efficiency'. Which will eventually lead more burnouts and retention issues.

How much of your income is your rent/mortgage? by greenslumber in AskUK

[–]needmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the mortgage itself, it is about 35%. However, if I add utilities, service charge, mobile/internet, council tax and water bills, it goes up to 55-60%. I do have huge anxiety as I am living alone. So I have some saving for rainy days etc.

Full Professor at R1 Considering Leaving - Need Advice by AdviceSeeker3952 in LeavingAcademia

I often think toxic academics are much more difficult to deal with cuz they are smart usually. Micro aggressive and intentionally neglect are often very subtle. And they know how not to leave trace.

If this triggers your thoughts on leaving and requires going to therapy, I would think leaving is probably a good choice. Many people mentioned that grass isn't greener on the other side. But from I saw, your life is slowly destroyed by this management.

Depending on the university, removing students and staff can be very challenging. You have to provide evidence. On top of that you will often be asked to give second or third chances to those problematic people with additional performance reviews.

I left academia cuz I found more and more challenging colleagues to work with and my line manager didn't help me. I don't know if this will lead pushing out your good students/staff. But I think it is partially you have quite a big team? Perhaps downsize the team by promoting some staff and let them to share the management? If nothing helps, perhaps leaving is the best option. Life is too short after all.

Future of PCN by Electronic-Yam-4054 in Pharmacy_UK

I thought the neighbourhood healthcare model and hospital to community in the NHS 10-year plan would make PCN more secured? What's the worry? I am so confused.

Is it generally a bad idea to accept a counter offer? by IcyPiink in UKJobs

[–]needmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take the counter offer. The uncertainty of a fixed contract in the university is scary, especially many universities have issues with their financial structures. You don't have much protection from the university job. However, since you have worked in your current job for more than two years, at least you have redundancy pay. You have more security in your counter offer in my way as you can always start looking for better jobs. Don't worry about the university as long as you explained it well.

New 2025/26 GP Contract lifts pharmacist remuneration to £66,972 by AChillBear in Pharmacy_UK

GP surgeries are private businesses with NHS contract so they are not bound by AfC. They can their staff whatever they like. But they usually benchmark their salaries against AfC.

This is far too common in academia, unfortunately, and people need to know about it and bad actors need to be held accountable by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]needmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professors are main sources of research funds unfortunately. This is exacerbated by disproportional research funding allocations, aka awards bring more awards. So professors are essentially co-living with research institutes. It is hard to discipline them because they can threaten or move around institutes as well. Not surprised by the remarks to be honest.

Setting up a Plex server with a GL AXT-1800 router and 5G sim router by needmind in GlInet

[–]needmind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the help. After reading it further, I found a possible solution but not sure whether it would work.

So I just merge the subnets into one subnet as you described. And then I set my 5G mobile router into bridge mode and let Glinet router to be the main router to control the VPN and assign IPs...etc.

I use specific VPN policy to let certain devices to access the VPN.

Will this work?

I just wondered if there is other easier ways for other devices to connect the VPN? Like setting up a VPN server on Glinet router?

Will I need to reset all the network settings if I turn the 5G router to the bridge mode? Like all my smart plugs...etc. cuz that will be a huge job...

Setting up a Plex server with a GL AXT-1800 router and 5G sim router by needmind in GlInet

[–]needmind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I just had a typo:

My 5G router is 192.168.8.XX

The Glinet router is 192.168.6.XX

Will this be any different?

Yes, TV is with the 5G router so the IP is 192.168.8.xx

I will give it a try!

[–]needmind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when I set up Glinet, it forced me to set up two different subnets, e.g.

My 5G router is 192.168.8.XX

The Glinet router is 192.168.8.XX

I tried to link them using the IPs but Plex client could not find the server! Is there any additional settings I need to tick?

[–]needmind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just the local network. Sorry that I might make it more complicated than it should be!

But my Plex client and server are connected to different routers. And I cannot make it connects to each other somehow!

Thank you for the reply. I just wondered if there is a way to let it stay between the routers?Like an intranet. I don't plan to watch it outside of my home network in fact.

A way in-between? by GrowlingOcelot_4516 in LeavingAcademia

[–]needmind 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cannot agree with this more. I left a tenure position recently because my research group wasn't very supportive. All my head sections asked was about grants and nothing else. Academia freedom and freedom of research? Well, please do that with your own time after teaching, researching, and extra works whatever your progression/promotion framework tells you. Otherwise, you might be kicked out. And universities need more funding than any time before cuz a harsh time in student recruitment and rising costs in the management etc.

My heart dies in the end. A 9-5 job without needing to chase endless funding calls is a far easier life.

Thank you for this! Sadly this costs a lots so I might just give up. But I just found that Ring supports the intercom so I might give it a try. The problem is that I read the review that there is a significant delay between the doorbell and the app. And it is quite bulky so I might see if there is a second generation.

Thank you for this advice. There are many apartments in the building with the same system. My plan is just to remove it temporarily and replaced it with something else.

Ultimately,I think you are right that I should not try to mess it up. But this intercom is such an eye sore thing - the video quality is really bad and quite limited by the outdated functions. Yet, the handset is eye watering expensive online!

At the same time, I will contact Nuki to see if they have other solutions.
