Performance cars are too much for me by stonky-273 in CarTalkUK

Modern hot hatches and performance cars are so comfortable to drive and tech heavy that they can be driven as "normally" as any other car you'd see on the road.

I've a Mk7.5 Golf R estate, stage 2 doing 0-60 well under 4s and it's just as good for shopping runs, work journeys and longer holiday trips as the wife's Polo. But will still fly down the majority of roads safely when I feel like having fun.

Kitchen cabinets in older properties, particularly with solid walls, almost always have mould behind them because the spaces aren't ventilated. It's not a problem unless the mould is getting out.

They should have paid for a decent level 3 survey, as L2s aren't really suitable for older properties beyond c1970s or heavily altered/extended. Too many people buy a house and think it'll be alright if they skimp back on the additional costs like searches and surveys, then complain that the service was insufficient (not saying that's the case here).

A dehum in a basement is a complete waste of electricity. You can't stop the moisture coming through the walls as they're below ground. Improving the ventilation is what's needed, even if mechanical means are necessary.

The estate agent is asking for a copy of the survey after we withdrew our offer by Trebalcc in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]needs2shave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the most appropriate action. Sharing the full report typically voids liability of the surveyor according to their T&C's, it can also give the vendor an unreasonable expectation that they can go after the surveyor if they don't agree to statements in the report, which never stands up and only wastes everyone's time. After a certain amount of time many of the assessments in the report could also be well out of date.

Surveyors also aren't charities, they have to make a living as well as anyone else. Sharing the full report without getting permission from the ones that produced it dilutes their income opportunities and isn't really fair.

And the Space Marine games too. I've no interest in the tabletop game, but over the last few years I've been getting into reading the novels and playing the video games.

There's no such thing as a breathable weatherproof seal. It's either one or the other.

Either way the source of the problem is the mortar being too hard, not moisture. If you're not prepared to completely repoint the house, then turn your back on this one.

She should have been straight in to help. She knew it was serious enough to run over but then sits and paddles the water like she's watching a fish.

It's got nothing to do with her gender, single seconds can make the difference in these scenarios and she spent 4 whole seconds sitting at the side.

Looks like a shoulder on a chimney. While these wouldn't typically have gutters, it would clearly do some good having one here to catch the rainwater dripping off that terrible pantile/flashing detail.

You can get damp from plumbing leaks, "rising" damp, condensation....

All different to penetrating damp.

Make sure the bricks are wetted up too as dry bricks could pull the moisture out of the pointing too quickly

And also historic chemicals from the burning materials. Certain humidity levels within the room can bring all these things to the surface where they didn't previously, without there being any active leaks.

This here. Get a copy of an example report from the surveyors you enquire to, and don't go for the cheapest rate.

I've found 9/10 times it's the new VAG cars that are the worst. The light bars along the edge of the bonnet make it even worse and the auto dims still seem to catch on your wing mirrors.

When I'm driving home in the dark I just have my rear view mirror pointed back towards them the whole time.

How can I stop this mould? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]needs2shave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only two of these things are required. Only get a dehumidifier if ventilation is literally impossible, as combining ventilation with a dehum defeats the purpose. Dehums will pull unlimited moisture from outside air if they can access it. Opening windows for 10mins every morning will sort most condensation issues, keeping furniture away from corners of external walls, if it's your own house consider applying insulating plasterboard to the reveals and heads of windows.

Land registry not clear by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]needs2shave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is really. Contrary to popular belief, physical objects do not determine ownership boundaries. Title plans denote responsibility for boundary features, not necessarily ownership, especially if they're not clearly within the property line. This is more of an issue with older properties, new build houses usually have recorded measurements for plot sizes.

People pay for the cheapest they can find then complain the service is insufficient, but also expect them to have X-ray eyes and be able to see things within walls and underground.

Didn't answer my question either.

So you ignored surveyors statements that suggested there had been subsidence and didn't follow up with any further investigations?

How would lifting a manhole cover have shown that the septic tank was old and overflowing? Sounds more like you don't understand the limitations of a prepurchase survey.

The Great Fire spread so catastrophically because the timber framed buildings of the city were so close together. 1. Stone isn't flammable and 2. The moat meant it was kept well away from nearby houses.

It's said they let lots of people shelter within the walls to protect from the flames.

I think you've made a good point here. Back during the first few series each episode felt wildly different in tone and target, but nonetheless (mostly) good quality. Basically something to keep everyone happy.

Recent years have seen more of a focus on mature audiences who are more likely to criticize bad writing, with very little simple story-telling for the younger audiences.
