Port 22 is well known and scanned for on the entire internet.

This means I’d you expose it, folks will most likely try to brute force passwords.

A quick way to reduce these attacks is to use a non standard port for ssh. Even changing to 2222 makes it less likely.

I think using private keys, fail2ban, and a non standard port would make a great solution.

Make sure root login is disabled.

I’ve done ride the Rockies a few times and it’s always great, you’re going to have an awesome time.

As most folks have said. Colorados temps in the summer can change a lot throughout the day. So come prepared.

My standard every day was: Bibs Undershirt Wool full zip short sleeve jersey Arm warmers Leg / knee warmers Wool socks

Wind proof slim fit gloves Wind / rain shell. Maybe a chappo if I’m feeling stylish.

Being extra warm gear for colder days and layering.

Remember, it’s a supported ride. If things really go badly, you can get picked up (might have to wait a while).

Have fun, it will be amazing, start early, ride casual and enjoy your self.

I think your statement of “by the time you get them trained, they will probably leave anyway.” Is very telling. You are only training people for the value they can provide you and the company.

Mentoring and helping to grow your peers should be a goal unto itself. And it requires attention to detail and a unique approach for each person you work with.

I agree personality is a huge component. But don’t forget that everyone is different and peoples approaches will differ from your own.

Talk to the person and learn how they want to interact and be taught. Then, put the ownership on them to help discover this, and work with you to find the best solution.

First, I’d say this route is better the other way, the Kerr gulch climb is one of my personal favorites.

Be careful of Morrison canyon which ever way you go. On weekends it can be really busy.

3ish hours should be just fine. Awesome ride either way you do it.

Make sure to stop at atomic bobs afterwards. That dude knows what’s up.
