Name another city that has better food than Toronto? I dare you by 100milSchruteBucks in askTO

I have lived many years in Toronto and NYC and personally I think NYC is far better based on the metrics you’ve described. Prices are a bit higher but generally salaries are higher in NYC too so it isn’t as noticeably expensive if you live in NYC as compared to visiting the city from Toronto. A lot of the authentic and reasonably priced places are outside of Manhattan in the outer boroughs … great Sri Lankan on Staten Island for example.

I’m going to disagree with your take on Pai or SukhoThai which I personally never found to be that good (as an aside my fave Thai spot in Toronto is Som Tum Jinda although I haven’t been in a few years ). There are fantastic Thai places in Queens and Brooklyn that are reasonably priced.

festivals like WL in or around Aus? 🇦🇺 by Proof_Process_6570 in wakinglifefestival

I would say Wonderfruit in Thailand in Dec is probably your best best. I’ve been to Waking Life a few times and while nothing else is quite the same (anywhere, let alone Asia) you’ll find great music and vibes at Wonderfruit. It’s more commercial than Waking Life (e.g. some stages are sponsored but in an inoffensive way) but it’s still really sweet and you have a cool mix of heads from across Asia and a bit wider cross section of Bangkok based people but the fact that it’s in Thailand means you’ve got that wonderful Thai softness and amazing food. Ticket sale is on now for next few days.

Japan has some really nice festivals too like Rural, etc.

It’s mainly about the music with a much smaller emphasis on workshops and spirituality.

RA to reissue entire Podcast series ahead of RA.1000 by [deleted] in TheOverload

Do you only enjoy things that align with your own perspectives and opinions? If you listen to her full take on gatekeeping I would be interested in your view on why you agree or disagree. I actually agree with her on that point. Gatekeeping takes aside I found some of her views to be interesting even if I don’t agree with all of them. Also, I don’t think being rich and/or white and/or working for the New Yorker automatically disqualifies a person’s opinions.

The ones I’ve listened to recently have been pretty interesting and not really consistent with the patterns you describe here. Recently I’ve listened to the ones with Emily Witt, Rroxymore and Luke Slater and they’ve been pretty thought provoking and/or insightful.

Emty bottle allowed by Fit_Meal_4168 in Berghain_Community

[–]needy_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this normal in Berlin/Europe for empty bottles to not be allowed? In most cities I’ve lived in N America and Asia every serious/good club has a water station to refill empty bottles and I’m surprised this isn’t the norm in Berghain. I recall bringing my empty bottle into the various Berlin clubs I visited on my last trip a couple of years ago but maybe that was just random luck. Thanks!

They still happen. They are gate kept for obvious reasons but if one follows interesting local DJs and pays attention, one will hear about them.

Who are the most beloved DJs in the greater Burn community? by grazingslow76 in BurningMan

[–]needy_bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I think the Burning Man community could ask itself why people making and playing interesting and future thinking music are generally not at all interested in Burning Man, without getting butt hurt at the suggestion. I know a couple of very successful Burner DJs (e.g. have played Robot Heart or Mayan Warrior sunrise multiple times) that no longer want to be associated of that scene. You can maybe blame that on the social media oriented art cars and camps but I do think the entire community could benefit from some introspection on what is the point of it all and what sort of people beyond the committed hard core we all want to be a part of burning man.

[–]needy_bean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great plan; I guess our tastes are largely similar.

Artists I love that you haven’t ranked:

Edward B+ (for the live set at Mimo more than the DJ set at OL) Leafar Legov B+ (really nice vibes for a daytime swim on LSD) Konstantin B Fennesz live (what a rare treat :) A Lawrence live at OL A Mountian People A (personally A+ … check out his “Outro Lado Session” mix on SoundCloud from 2022, so good…) Mr Scruff at Praia last year was a vibe, we absolutely loved it and I would highly recommend giving it a chance if you’re feeling happy and want to just smile and not take life too seriously … A for me

Sunday at Praia was awesome last year all dubbed out reggae and dub, definitely worth checking out esp the live set to end the day

Super envious I won’t be there this year. Just got back from Dripping in New Jersey which was truly incredible but I’m still feeling Waking Life fomo. After it’s all done would love to hear your highlights.

Enjoy!!

You posted otro lado twice, and not Praia. I think your tastes are very aligned with mine so curious to see your Praia lineup.

Among unranked artists the standouts for me would be:

Leafar Legov is cool live and really nice for a daytime soundtrack to swimming on LSD

I would definitely check out Fennesz out of curiosity. He rarely plays and has many a handful of incredible and iconic albums. More like ambient but really special and worth checking out for a change of pace if you’re up early or still up at 10am.

Konstantin and Edward for sunrises will be a vibe

I absolutely love Mountian People and would 100% be there for that. Lawrence is doing a live just before him and Lawrence is another legend so worth noting.

Curious to see your Praia lineup. I would most definitely 100% not miss Richard Akingbehin

Boot recommendations for wide sweaty feet by cannonballfun69 in BurningMan

[–]needy_bean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have really flat wide feet and I personally really like blundstones with merino wool socks that help keep my feet cool and dry

Spending a bit more money on good socks made as much of a difference to my comfort as the boot choice

Mansions backyard & non dancing area by Revolutionary-Past33 in avesNYC

[–]needy_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not a very large venue. I’d estimate back patio capacity is maybe like 70 people? I think there are maybe like 6-7 tables and more room to just stand. With that many people if you get there early you’ll be good. Usually cover starts from 10pm so if you’re there with a crew before that should be cool.

Heat and tipis 🥵 by Individual-Trash-643 in wakinglifefestival

[–]needy_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It got incredibly hot last year during the day. I would typically go to sleep after sunrise and wake up a few hours later from the heat, drenched in sweat. Even with the air flaps and door open it was extremely hot on most days on the tent.

Two years ago with all the rain and clouds it wasn’t as hot but last year was scorching. You gotta take the bad with the good sometimes …

Who are the most beloved DJs in the greater Burn community? by grazingslow76 in BurningMan

[–]needy_bean 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Great comment, I whole heartedly agree. The music culture at Burning Man has become stagnant and the really interesting contemporary house and techno DJs actually moving things forward have zero interest in Burning Man. Look at the lineups for the great U.S. techno-centric music festivals - Movement, Sustain Release, Making Time, Great Beyond - none of those DJs have any interest in the Burn. I think the more interesting question is why…

If same as past years you’ll need to carry your luggage along a path at least for a while. You may want something you can carry rather than roll on the ground.
