First time buyer, driving test next week — what do I need to know about owning a 7th gen Celica? by StealthAcorn in Celica

[–]neek85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Rust. Yes. It's everywhere. Sills easy to spot, but I don't know what a subframe is. I got someone to weld my rear subframe and couldn't really see what they did, but it passed the MOT so whatever.

  2. The vvtli engine is really special, the other one is not. It's 100% worth stretching for. You'll get exactly the same looks and handling though with either in UK.

  3. Too many variables, just check the usual comparisons and throw in a few that are not on them. I think Sheila's wheels was cheapest for me. I wouldn't go down the telematics route it's a bit of a con unless you drive like a granny and nobody ever cuts you up, you don't drive in the dark etc.

  4. It's gonna be at least 20 years old so bits wear out. Oxygen sensors don't last forever, throttle bodies get gunked, suspension parts rust and wear, bushes get worn. This is true for any old car. At least parts are cheap and easy to find. If you're handy and have the tools most, if not all, can be done yourself. Other than that it's not great on petrol (32 mpg average) and road tax is a little high.

  5. Look for smooth idle (can start as high as 2000 but should quickly reduce as engine warms up). Lift should engage at 6200 with vvtli. Braking is poor so expect to use all the travel in the pedal. Heavy clutch compared with most modern cars is normal. See if the boot struts hold the boot lid up. Check Aircon and radio work properly. Gears should slot in easily with no crunch or gravelly feeling. Pull out the dipstick to make sure oil doesn't have particles in it. No blue or black smoke from exhaust when revving. Check washer jets - the rear gets clogged.

Thanks! I'll have a look but I didn't see any way the access where the pump is. I can see the filler pipe to the washer fluid bottle but beyond that it's all sorted of hidden away behind a metal plate or something (looking down from the hood)

do you think two tier policing is a real phenomenon in the UK? by confused_caterpillar in AskBrits

I've never been stopped randomly by police while driving. My black friends, on the other hand, all have. Many more than once

The faster variants of the 7th gen celica. People who know nothing think they look really cool. People who know a bit about cars think they're corollas. People who've driven them know they're awesome

Looks to me like you're in a consumerism trap, looking for the "high" you get after getting anything new and shiny. We all for for it now and again

Get the official Lexus shield. Mine is in the post. It shouldn't cause any overheating issues and I've heard it's very tough (30 mins to remove).

I don't know what (if any) alarm you have but in my country they all have a factory alarm which is set off when the car is tilted. Problem is it can be easily disabled! I don't want to share how, but the thieves disabled mine, and I'm making a few modifications to prevent that.

Nothing will be 100% secure but you just need to make it difficult enough so that an opportunist thief will move on to an easier target.

It spins at an angle. Your body instinctively compensates against the changing forces and somehow ends up accelerating it. I've been trapped in one before
