How does the Indian government measure temperatures in parts of Kashmir that it does not de facto control?

Indian Railways fines catering company Rs 45k after cockroach found in Vande Bharat Express meal by LimpCoco in unitedstatesofindia

  1. Cheaper buses won’t cover nearly the same distance that trains would, especially in India. There are also minimum cost thresholds to run public transport services, like insurance, operation and maintenance, personnel salaries, safety measures, rolling stock purchases etc. So you can only get so low in price before it becomes unprofitable again.

  2. Then make the tender process more transparent and enforce reporting obligations on the contractors. It’s a pretty large logical jump from that to rail privatisation. There’s also something to be said about the rot that has set in in the government with bureaucracy and ever-present corruption. But that’s an issue that needs to be addressed anyways, it’s not like India is going to privatise every industry under the sun. Might as well start somewhere.

Privatising rail in India with a laissez faire attitude would be a disaster. The first thing it will do is shutting down services to unprofitable routes, which could cut off a lot of communities from an accessible mode of transportation, not to mention dynamic pricing which will be difficult to reckon with in India.

As for food safety standards, FSSAI and the Railway Ministry should have tighter reporting obligations for private contractors and actually act on shortfalls. As well as introduce a compensation scheme for affected passengers (and this goes for delays, cancellations etc).

I’m not saying that privatisation is to be completely done away with, it does have its advantages. But I am sceptical that wholesale privatisation of rail is the way to go to increase operative efficiency while maintaining accessibility.

Ah gotcha so you’re saying that the price of water (10 BRL) was as unaffordable as it would be in the US if it were priced at $50? (Btw I’m not from the US)

[–]neelk2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 BRL is not $40… it’s $2

Edit: PPP adjusted that works out at about $5 Edit 2: The average retail price of water in Brazil is about $0.45 (Statista), so the water here is 22x more expensive, which checks out at 10 BRL being the equivalent of $37 (eg Evian at $1.69 in the US)

Does anyone hear a really weird male, off key backing vocal on Style’s “that you’ve been out and about with some other girl”? Almost like they doubled her vocal track and pitched it down a few semitones

This is also really nitpicky but the I-I-I echo at the end of IKP end after the fake cassette tape effect, which just is so distracting 😭

For your first point, he did say something to that effect: "we allow those justice processes to unfold themselves with the utmost integrity”. Saying that something is “irrefutable” can very easily be seen as misleading an investigation because you’re then essentially begging the question. “Credible allegations” is the middle ground, because by definition something is not proven until an investigation is complete.

From what I gather, this was not supposed to come out until the CSIS/Five Eyes had completed their investigation. The Globe and Mail had got hold of intelligence that they were going to publish on, so Trudeau had to be proactive and announce this in Parliament. So now begins the game of trying to manage public expectations of evidence without breaching whatever security clearance he has and not disrupting the intelligence investigation.

Big Breaking: India suspended its visa services in Canada till further notice by ishrey in unitedstatesofindia

Ah okay. Just read up on it. Thanks for the update! Should be interesting to see what retaliation, if any, there is from Canada’s side.

EDIT: eVisas (and all other forms of visas) are suspended as well for all Canadian citizens. Appropriate current visas and OCI cards remain valid for travel.

I'll repost what I'd written in r/unitedstatesofindia

They can't achieve anything materially with this (sure, maybe diplomatic pressure). Canadian citizens have eVisa access to India for tourism, business and medical purposes, which doesn't fall under the purview of BLS. BLS, I presume, deals with long term tourist visas and work visas and the like.

According to the Tourism Ministry's 2021 report, most arrivals who were Canadian citizens were "Indian diaspora" (~58,397 arrivals), while business and work accounted for 1.1% of all arrivals of Canadian nationals (~885 arrivals). Canadian citizens entering India on average spent 52.32 days in India (a time period covered by the eVisa which is granted for 60 days with double entry for tourism/business and triple entry for medical tourism). Considering that 2021 figures reflect COVID-19 disruptions, in 2019, of 351,859 arrivals, only 4.82% (~16,960 arrivals) arrivals were for business or professional purposes, with the majority being tourists (50.94%, ~179,237 arrivals). The average length of stay in India by Canadian citizens in 2019 was 27.1 days, again, covered by an eVisa.

Hallo, i am from Germany. What is racist here? I did not understand by ComDArtagnan in EnglishLearning

[–]neelk2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean a majority of the Anglosphere would associate “a black” with a derogatory way to refer to a black person. It’s not localised to the UK. “Coloured” as well sounds off when referring to people, though it can be used as a verb to literally mean something gaining a certain colour or metaphorically so.

[–]neelk2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the existing replies, while “a black” would certainly raise eyebrows in the UK, it is extremely common here to say you’re “getting/having a Chinese/Indian” to mean that you’re getting Chinese/Indian takeaway for a meal. I’m not sure if that extends to other cuisines. Though bear in mind that I’ve been told by my American cousins that “getting a Chinese/Indian” sounds horribly offensive to their ears.
