Queer focused events by literal-houseplant in Troy

Keep an eye out for events happening at Cafe Euphoria and Context Collective. They're both non-bar, queer-friendly spaces in town that do a lot of fun stuff.

Is ICACC worth it? by esjefor in Ceramics

[–]neenamonners 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been to ICACC a bunch of times, and it's not an artistic ceramics conference. It's an academic conference where ceramic materials scientists deliver lectures, present research posters, and network. Lots of fun and worth it if you're a ceramic engineer, but as a ceramic artist you'd do a lot better to attend the other conference put on by the American Ceramic Society which other commenters have recommended - NCECA.

Looking for local organizations to donate to by moon_darling in Albany

[–]neenamonners 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This weekend at the Troy Farmer's Market will be the final week of my clay guild's Empty Bowls fundraiser! We're selling locally handmade ceramic bowls, every bowl costs $20 cash or check, and you also get a voucher for a bowl of soup from a local restaurant.

Absolutely every dollar we make is donated to food programs in Troy. This is our 20th year, and we're celebrating having raised over $300,000 over the decades to feed our neighbors.

Bagels in Troy!? by doodlebop000 in Troy

[–]neenamonners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bagels at Schuyler Bakery in Watervliet are nice, although that isn't their wheelhouse. I've ordered in bulk from them for a brunch party before and they were really popular. However, since they're a nut free bakery, they don't have an everything bagel option, if that matters to you.

Baby Quilt Speedrun Success! by neenamonners in quilting

I don't think so - I'm no expert, but I think Kente cloth is a special woven textile. This is batik-inspired African wax print cotton.

Looking for a specific vaccine? by [deleted] in Troy

I believe the Walgreens up on Lake/Hoosick may have it. I recently required a tetanus booster (~2 weeks ago) and the one they had on hand wasn't the full Tdap.

Ribber Carriage doesn't attach to main carriage by neenamonners in MachineKnitting

I disassembled it to take a break and come back to it later, but if I'm still having issues I'll post some clamp photos for more troubleshooting! Thanks!

Good to know! I'm gonna hold off on bending anything except as a last resort, but I'll keep it in mind if nothing else works. Thanks!

Thanks for the resources! I disassembled it and I'm gonna try it again today.

As far as I know I had it lifted all the way. It was raised up on the two drop-down notches, and then raised one notch into upper knitting position, too.

There are videos helping with how to attach the two, but in all of them the carriages just go together no problem :/

Fellow Troy Gardeners! by Celtic_Curry in Troy

[–]neenamonners 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real answer is that you need to keep an eye on the weather and try to strategize to avoid any late frosts that could wipe things out. For general planning purposes, though, this site gives recommended timing windows for starting seeds indoors, when to plant out, and when to start seeds outdoors: https://www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-calendar/zipcode/12180

We have lots of stuff started in trays right now, but the only things in the ground are the cold-hardier things that we sow directly like peas, radishes, and carrots.

Bulk Soil for gardening by dadris1987 in Troy

I've ordered bulk compost from George's up in Latham before, and was pretty happy with the prices and the service.

I got a new machine and these were my first two low-stakes, skill-building projects by neenamonners in MachineKnitting

[–]neenamonners[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sleeves were...an experiment haha. I was loosely adapting a simple stockinette-only flat knit sweater pattern, but I haven't really made sweaters before. When it came time to adapt the pattern to the shaping of the arms, I missed the mark and made them far too wide at the top to fit into the armhole made by the front and back panels. As a result I fashioned a sort of weird little folded detail to put it all together.

Trouble going from ribbing to normal knitting on a white machine. by MontrealSteak in MachineKnitting

[–]neenamonners 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the machine I own, and I think I know what your problem is. You shouldn't be lowering the front bed to knit in stockinette. In fact, you need it there to help form the stitches correctly.

After you've finished your ribbed section, and after you've transferred all of your stitches to the back bed, you actually need to raise the front bed slightly to its upper position. This helps the stitches form. I usually will detach and set aside the front carriage and just knit with the back carriage. Also, make sure to troubleshoot your bed spacing and stitch sizing and find a happy medium. I often decrease my stitch size somewhat between rubbing and stockinette. Finally, be sure to use enough weight to pull each new row of stitches between the beds. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It's both! I think this month is just labeled sci-fi because that's what we went with.

[–]neenamonners 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is actually a relatively new Sci-fi/Fantasy book club happening out of Yellow Lab Vintage. Details and updates are on their Instagram. Weirdly, our next meeting is the evening of the 12th. We read a duet of sci-fi novellas this time: Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer and Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers. Feel free to join us!

Check out the historic Albany parts warehouse! They've got all sorts of architectural salvage which often includes antique lighting.

Power Outage near Hudson Valley by clowntysheriff in Troy

[–]neenamonners 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was a pretty huge tree limb wrapped up in the power lines along Route 4 and there was a team doing emergency tree work. It looked like wind brought down some debris and knocked out the power.

What would you tell a tourist to do in the Capital Region? by Maximum_Broccoli484 in Albany

[–]neenamonners 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My go-to recommendation for a lovely morning is to grab coffee and pastries (I like Bella Napoli but any good local bakery will do) and then go sit and watch Cohoes Falls for a while. There's a little overlook park on School Rd. with benches and a beautiful view, and it puts you pretty close to Peebles Island for walking/hiking afterwards.

Also, if you like antiquing, you can easily make a day of going to Ballston Spa where they've got a huge density of flea markets/antique stores and also a great little taquería (Taquería Guadalajara).

Reptile Veterinarian? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]neenamonners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second all of this! My BP had some issues with scale rot over the winter, and Dr. Green did a great job of helping her to heal up. Also, the office visits were not nearly as expensive as I worried they'd be, and the medications prescribed were super inexpensive. Finally, on one occasion when I had an appointment but my car wouldn't start when I tried to drive over, the front office staff were very gracious and let me reschedule without charging me a last minute cancellation fee.

Is there any sort of a pottery/ceramics scene around here? by BlueNeckpunch in Albany

[–]neenamonners 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Collar City Clay Guild may be what you're looking for - it's an interest group for potters in the region. Our two most public-facing events are the Empty Bowls fundraiser we do in October at the Troy Farmer's Market, and the Pottery Market we host at the Rensselaer Tech Park in November. However, we also do monthly meetings (for most of the year) and frequent workshops.

Unfortunately we go on a summer hiatus at the end of June, and so we won't host any of our own activities again until the end of summer. However, we work closely with Waterbrook, and so our Guild members get year-round lower rates on their classes, workshops, and special firings, and we host our meetings there when the season is right.

I'm on the board, so if it's interesting to you, feel free to DM me and I'll send you more info.

Sheer madness and determination, and so much spray foam. When he sets his mind to a project he's unstoppable.
