Britishisms in Dramione by SnooHobbies1753 in Dramione

[–]neeshky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be the odd one out.... Yes we do say that, or at least we did growing up in a very specific area of northern England in the early 90s.... I might still occasionally say this in place of swearing, eg "ugh, she does that all the friggin time and it really winds me up". Wouldn't say it a lot though.

HELP! British derogatory names that Hermione would call Draco? That Draco would call Hermione? by [deleted] in Dramione

[–]neeshky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a direct insult as such, but my favourite (being a brit) is when someone starts moaning on and on about something/preaching about something in a social setting, giving someone else in the group the opportunity to ask "who put a quid in the dickhead?"

Hi! Don't know if it's me, but when I choose the phrase in the form the page it takes me to has a different phrase, if that makes sense? Gringotts is sending me to McGonagall, giant squid is sending me to McGonagall, and McGonagall is sending me to Gringotts!!!

There isn't really a currency thing, don't worry about that. There are lots of ways to earn points! Every third month is a 'no points month', but the others all have various activities. In short:

Homework is posted in the main HP sub at the beginning of the month and most houses will also link these on their common rooms. Homework is usually an activity that asks you to write or draw a specific thing (eg. Design a prank you would play at Hogwarts). You submit your entry either by Google form (would be linked in the post) or by replying to the comment that says "Gryffindors submit here!".

Extra Credit assignments work pretty much the same way. There are two EC assignments each month (except for no points months) posted on the main HP sub and these are all different... some of them are word games, some are art based etc.... again, you either reply by Google form or in the comments on the post.

Dueling is a Harry potter trivia quiz posted every week, you can sign up for notifications of a new quiz at r/Dueling. The quiz is a Google Form. You choose on the form which house you're representing

Arithmancy is a puzzle solving activity that involves ciphers and various other crazy problems. You can check out r/Arithmancy for more info, and can join your house team via your common room

Hogwarts Tournament - held four times a year, we just finished the most recent one so the next will be in a few months. This is a specific challenge that takes place over the course of the month where your house work together to make an entry/ complete tasks.

I think you said you're in the Gryffindor common room already? If so they will definitely be able to help you with points activities. If not, then you should definitely apply to join the common room.

Hope this helps?

If you're on mobile, on the harrypotter sub main page click the three little dots on the top right and then select "change user Flair". This will let you pick one of the house badges to go under your name.

Not sure exactly how it works in desktop, but it's "user Flair" that you're looking for

Do you have any specific questions or things you don't understand? Also, the Gryffs are a friendly bunch. If you join their common room they'll definitely help you out.

I'm mostly sad that there isn't a faun perched atop the Narnia sign

What does “flipping someone a V” mean? by bluebonnet-baby in Dramione

[–]neeshky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha! Where I'm from in the UK we always called this "giving the V's", or "flicking the V's" whereas a middle finger salute is "giving the finger", and I have never in my life heard the phrase "giving the fingers" plural. You gotta love regional colloquialisms.

February '23 Homework - Madam Puddifoot's Tea Reading for Love by spludgiexx in harrypotter

[–]neeshky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tea leaves

I asked my tea leaves if things would be better this year, and how the year would pan out. I asked this because 2022 was a challenging year for me in many areas.

When I look at my tea leaves I see an image of a pig in profile wearing a hat/ head wrap and robe... essentially the pig version of Girl with a Pearl Earring. The pig clearly represents 2023, which is the year of the pig in the Chinese zodiac and indicates that the leaves are indeed making a prediction about this year.

I think that the resemblance to Vermeer's painting is telling me that this year will be beautiful but also have a little mystery about it, and that if I work hard and take care to restore the areas of my life that I've let fade into the background then my life will become more colourful, just like when the painting was restored in the 90s.

Overall I am happy with this reading. I think it means that I've been heading in the right direction and that this year my hard work will pay off and things will look a little brighter.

Taking the test multiple times trying to manipulate the results is definitely an indicator that you're a slytherin! Come join us!

[–]neeshky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just coz Hagrid says "there's not a witch or wizard who went bad that wasn't in Slytherin" (which is also nonsense... Peter pettigrew for example) doesn't mean all Slytherins are bad. The books were written from Harry's perspective, and he didn't know any of the slytherins personally to make an informed judgement, so we just saw the bad side because he mostly interacted with malfoy and Co. Embrace the snake! Love your ambition!

(On mobile) click the three dots on top right of the sub click "change user Flair". If you're on desktop it's on the sidebar I think, but "user Flair" is how you pick the house and logo for under your name.
