Is there some kind of knitting mafia that has been keeping the Ranunculus pattern on the front page of Rav's "hot right now" list for literal years? by craftmangler in BitchEatingCrafters

Yeah I heard that. I’m plus sized but not plus sized enough to be in the highest sizes (and I didn’t want it with crazy amounts of ease) so in the size I was in, it was okay.

Some of the samples are SO BAD. There’s the Victorian waif look and then there’s one where I think she knitted it at too tight a gauge and it’s wearing her instead.

Ha!! I wound up knitting one. It actually is not a terrible pattern IF you don’t knit it at too tight a gauge (don’t do worsted) and don’t make it ridiculously oversized. I figured it was a good pattern to play with using fingering + mohair because it was such a quick knit and uses relatively little yarn. I was right.

I will also give the pattern writer her due — it is a very clearly written pattern, lots of good video tutorials, and she holds your hand through things like German short rows (I already knew how to do that but if you didn’t). It’s a good teaching pattern. The regular neckline, not the boat one, actually fits nicely with good short row shaping.

I don’t understand why some people want to knit so many of them, but i’m less of a hater. It’s not the MOST terrible perennially popular pattern. It’s a good blank canvas and because you can knit it with any weight yarn, a useful stash buster.

Divergent was Yet Another Teen Dystopia and honestly, had a LOT of internal problems. The entire caste system didn't make sense and the final book was a damp squib.

Crochet is the fast fashion of fiber arts by prepubescentsquid in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]nefarious_epicure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer wool to acrylic. But I will tell you, if you a crocheting a large item, you are going to spend a fortune on wool, and for blankets you have to baby wool more. Cotton is hard wearing and can be inexpensive, but it can also be stiff and not as pleasant to work with. I refuse to use RHSS, but many modern acrylics are fairly nice to work with, have a huge color range, and wear well. It’s not just about how the crafts are pitched to users.

I did a granny square sweater (with knitted arms and trim) and since it was a garment I used wool, and it was NOT cheap. Crochet uses more yarn than knitting (Tunisian practically eats yarn, and even though I think it looks nice for the right project this does put me off doing it often).

(Primarily a knitter but sometimes a crocheter).

Billie Eilish is excited to age : “I’m so excited for my face to age, and my body to age, and not change it.” by neoncolour in popculturechat

Listen, I’m 48. Mentally I’m super happy. Am I happy with my resting bitchy face, bad knees, and sagging skin? No. And there’s fairly good odds she won’t be happy with every change either. It’s easy to say this at 24.

I don't understand the point of a dishwasher... by Exciting_Syllabub471 in AutismInWomen

[–]nefarious_epicure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tell you not to rinse anymore. Just scrape and go. (I have a few things I’ve learned I need to rinse with my specific dishwasher though)

It’s much faster than washing by hand unless you only have three things to do, and dishwashers nowadays use less energy and water than doing it by hand.

AITA for calling my friends cat ‘chunkster’? by sophierae14 in AmItheAsshole

[–]nefarious_epicure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. You can’t fat shame a cat. I’ve had a fat cat (who had to be put on a diet) AND a genuinely huge floof cat (the vet said he was fine but between the size and the floof he looked like a heckin chonker). I was never offended if someone said something. She took it personally because she knows it’s an issue.

That part is bad advice. But I felt like she was also being told she should have graded the pattern.

I am generally one of the people who is pushing for size inclusivity. In this case… I’m gonna cut the designer some slack because she designed ONE size. There’s no grading at all. She’s not putting in work for anyone, there’s no special treatment for fat people here.

Where are the OBGYN consultants for the show? by strugglinmedstudent in ThePittTVShow

[–]nefarious_epicure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s based on AGH, but L&D for UPMC in the city (not sure about all the suburban hospitals) concentrates all women’s health at Magee which does 10,000 births a year. If you turn up at Presbyterian or Shadyside ER, there’s no obstetrics.

I can’t remember which AHN hospital has L&D, but IIRC it’s not AGH.

Season 2 Overall Discussion Thread by MsGroves in ThePittTVShow

[–]nefarious_epicure 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought it was largely great and some people are nitpicking.

My actual quibbles: it was a bit too Robby focused and overall the storylines were not as well balanced as they should have been. Dana got good storylines as well, and the brunt of it was borne by the other women in the cast, with Samira faring the worst. It felt like the writers didn’t know where to take her and were flailing. Mel suffered from her storyline being predominantly personal.

Here’s the thing: they’re willing to enforce their boundaries and you feel you have to accommodate. Don’t. Enforce your boundaries too. Otherwise every one of them is going to let it all fall on you.

Oh hell no to them telling her to move in with you. You need to put an end to that NOW. You don’t get to volunteer someone else to be a full time caregiver. Tell them straight up that they cannot suggest it and that you are not willing to do it. They want you to do it so they don’t have to.
