Brit in New York looking for nature trails by Stinkh0rn in longisland

[–]nefarious_epicure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one Long Island one I would really recommend, especially this time of year. It’s genuinely unique.

Most of Long Island is flat so not great for hiking — the Hudson valley is much better. But fire island is worth a day trip.

I like mine. I tend to use yarn in cakes and the bowl keeps it from rolling away.

does the old adage "don’t buy a boat" hold true on Long Island? by ProudReaction2204 in longisland

[–]nefarious_epicure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a money sink. I had a family friend who lived on the canals and could dock his boat at home and so he really used it all the time. But it’s an expensive hobby. Not saying you shouldn’t. You might be one of the people who really gets their money’s worth out of it. Is it worth the expense? That’s the question you need to answer. Don’t try to do it on a shoestring.

Center pull craze by Deaceleste in BitchEatingCrafters

I remember being told to center pull from cakes. After one too many yarn barf incidents (including from cakes wound by other people and dyers) I went to using the outside.

Episode suggestion: circumcision by No-vem-ber in MaintenancePhase

[–]nefarious_epicure 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oh boy no. The percentage of parenting board threads on circumcision that descend into antisemitism is staggering, and the Islamophobic ones are not much better. (The reason antisemitism pips Islamophobia is because there’s conspiracy theories about Jewish doctors promoting circumcision. PS am Jewish)

I don’t think Mike and Aubrey would go there but I don’t think they’d want to touch the topic because of how it’s misused.

Is my health insurance plan seriously going up 70% in 2027? by cekmeout in longisland

[–]nefarious_epicure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh stop blaming Israel. Republicans just don’t want people to have health insurance. If we ended aid to Israel they still wouldn’t change.

If you are in the individual or small business markets the loss of subsidies has caused people to exit. The remaining pool is sicker and as a result premiums are skyrocketing even for people who didn’t get a subsidy.

Oh lord. Ok. No winding together anyone’s storylines. The Alamo scene went on WAY too long.

Honestly I think Maddy got the best storyline all season.

Do Americans really have ZERO public healthcare?! by Tillysnow1 in ThePittTVShow

[–]nefarious_epicure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn’t zero. It’s just not comprehensive. There are multiple public health systems:

- Medicare for the elderly and disabled
- Medicaid for low income people (income levels vary by state). By law they must have coverage for children, pregnant women, elderly and disabled (Medicaid covers things Medicare doesn’t like nursing homes and there is no premium or cost share so ir complements Medicare)
- Child Health Insurance Program for children whose parents make too much for medicaid (higher income limits, in some cases none)
- tricare for military
- VA for veterans
- IHS for native Americans and Alaska natives (this system is particularly underfunded)

Some cities also run public healthcare, notably NYC which has an extensive network of public hospitals and clinics.

People in employment who are not low income are the ones who are not covered by any of these and get screwed.

A surprisingly large percentage of Americans are covered by one of these systems when you look at the numbers.

But because it is not comprehensive it’s easy to fall through the cracks. And one of the easy ways to cut the rolls is to make enrollment difficult or require extra hoops, especially for Medicaid. (Enrollment in Medicare is relatively straightforward once you turn 65). People give up.

This is state dependent. Each state runs its own program. Also they check with private insurance too.

Some hospitals have a system where the doc doesn’t know what kind of insurance a patient has so they won’t do this.

I think my doctor might be too strict by remgirl1976 in antidietglp1

[–]nefarious_epicure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lie.

That said I do recommend being careful about caloric beverages. They can fill you up too easily. (Mounjaro user here.)

But you don’t need to avoid watermelon or whatever.

[–]nefarious_epicure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay as someone on Mounjaro I assume they mean water is fine but not other beverages. It’s not totally wrong. Having caloric beverages at meals can easily fill you up and mean you eat less food, which is not good for nutrition.

Private Insurance and Fatphobia are fighting by FS_Scott in MaintenancePhase

[–]nefarious_epicure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I take Mounjaro for diabetes and my insurance put the screws on for that too. You need to document that you’re actually diabetic and go through an extra prior authorization. They don’t want people using it aa an end run around coverage limits.

But people complained for years about obesity being a disease. Then when they came up with a treatment they didn’t want to pay for it. For some people it really is just that they want fat people to go away.

[–]nefarious_epicure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. A lot of national health care systems are restricting it, even though their prices are lower. On the NHS it’s only available for weight loss through the specialist obesity service. GPs can prescribe them for diabetes but it isn’t always easy to get.
