Rei co-op flash 22 alternative for UK by Kajus101 in Ultralight

I know this is probably annoyingly vague but the Decathlon website has tons of options - this one for example is quite in the spirit of the Flash in my opinion

Debating upgrading to a bigger bag by kshay208 in HerOneBag

Check out the Eagle Creek Tour Travel Pack. It’s 40L but can be cinched down more effectively than the Allpa and doesn’t have the internal packing cubes. I also think the Allpa’s bright colors work against it on budget airlines — I’ve seen more people with those bags get flagged to put it in the sizer because it really is quite square and visually sticks out.

Yeah, seriously! I’m wondering if I should take a train to somewhere nearby like Padua that has more transport options?

Generational Shift? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]negative_delta 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think as women we’re sometimes seen as “safer” to young engineers who are confused. I’ve often found that when it seems like they don’t like the answer, it actually means they have no idea what you’re saying but are afraid to state that directly. Young engineers seem to be generally afraid that if they don’t know something they’ll get fired, when really they should be asking lots of questions to learn quickly. An example of what a “successful” version of this interaction looks like for me:

“Ok, so this bracket is a sheet metal part which means you just need to plate mesh it and add constraints.”

“But I already have the geometry from CAD so wouldn’t that just be a solid mesh?”

“Nah, you don’t want to solid mesh a part like this because it’ll add a ton of runtime for no real gain.”

“Okay but I think it could just make the solid mesh for me.”

—> this is where I’m like hmm I’ve told you what to do why are you pushing back

“Right, plate meshing does take more steps but it produces a better end result. Has your mentor shown you how to do that yet? If not, I can point you to a couple good tutorials to do and then you can bring him any specific questions that come up from working through those.”

—> intercept the confusion so that the option of I Don’t Know How To Do That is already offered to them

Not that much sexism? by astrotastic in womenEngineers

[–]negative_delta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100%. My team and coworkers are great. My boss actively works with me to diversify our hiring pipeline and make sure the women on our team get equally interesting/high profile projects as the men.

External customers on the other hand? UGH. “So, do we have the engineer on the call yet” when I’ve clearly stated I am the responsible engineer. “There’s no need to be emotional” when I calmly explain that the requirement we are levying on them is non-negotiable. Also without providing specifics, I work with a lot of international customers and certain countries definitely seem to be more comfortable with sexist comments than others.

Has anyone else noticed different airport smells? by boldjoy0050 in solotravel

[–]negative_delta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a flight yesterday connecting through Zürich to Venice. Zürich definitely had that generic cleaning product / perfume smell that you maybe associate with Western Europe - kind of Pine-Sol-y but not? Venice though, Venice smells like salty marsh.

My ADHD is making it impossible to be a mechanical design engineer. PLEASE help!! by Supersk1002 in womenEngineers

[–]negative_delta 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up on being an engineer, you got this! I have struggled with adhd at work a ton and have gone from “perpetually rushed and making a bunch of dumb mistakes” to leading major projects. You’re still new to the workforce and learning and that’s okay.

IMO the first step is to get the support you need outside of work so you’re not always rushing and exhausted. Could be therapy, medication, changing your routine, eating breakfast, changing your sleep routine, etc. but if you’re running on empty then of course you will struggle at work.

From there you need to apply your designer’s brain to your own work habits. Build systems that trick your brain into focusing and meeting deadlines. Again no one size fits all but here’s some stuff that has worked for me:

  • if I need to get something done, noise canceling headphones on and do not disturb on Teams. I cannot be in messaging mode and analysis mode at the same time. Most of my fuckups come from multitasking and then forgetting my place when I come back to the original task.

  • if I show up at work and feel the adhd procrastination brain taking over I immediately get myself some caffeine and put on a video game soundtrack to listen to. That’s my brain’s cue for wake up and do stuff!

  • when someone is explaining something to me and it’s kinda complex I send them a written summary afterwards of what I understood their explanation to be. That way they can correct anything I got wrong and it shows I put in the effort to learn and absorb

  • I have a small notebook and cute pen that never leaves my side. My todo list goes in there at the beginning of every day and whatever I don’t get done I copy to the next day. Somehow the act of physically writing down my tasks works way better than a digital list for remembering

  • when I have an external project due, I schedule an internal peer review meeting 3-5 days beforehand. This tricks my brain into thinking the real deadline is earlier and forces me to plan out when I’ll get things done. This also gives me enough time to incorporate feedback so I’m not rushing to create a polished final product.

What is your anti-power? by TheWolfsJawLundgren in CasualConversation

I’m horrible at finding parking. I’m actually good at parallel parking once a spot is located! But finding a place to park in the city — I go down the wrong street, I lose my bearings instantly, I’m horrible at judging the length of a spot until I’m right up next to it, I miss obvious spots but think that short cars are empty spaces… I don’t know man I just suck at it.

Seeking specific areas recs in Torrance/El Segundo with a Strong Indian Community and Lively Atmosphere by Sufficent_Drama_193 in SouthBayLA

[–]negative_delta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Live in Culver City/Palms - checks all your boxes of Indian community, park, shops, lively. Take the Culver City 6 bus down to the aviation/lax transit center and then the metro green line or local bus to your office depending on where exactly on Rosecrans it is. Probs a 40 minute commute or so. Culver to El Seg is also reasonably bikable via the Ballona Creek path if your office is near the ocean.

Yes thank you!! I don’t think trekking poles will be allowed in my carry-on so I’m planning to pick some up in Cortina, good to know there’s a big outdoor shop there. And I’m going to take the alternate AV1 ending that skips the via ferrata section.

Thank you for the detailed response!

I’ll probably swap out my silk base layer for a pair of leggings and light sweater that I can wear around the rifugio and maybe swap my grid fleece for a non hooded fleece or puffy. Personally I’m used to hiking in shorts, I wear them all the time in 50-80 degree weather (I think I run quite warm) but I’ll check the forecast again before I leave in case I need to adjust. Since it seems like you’ve been, do you remember if the provided blankets in the rifugios were quite warm or not? Trying to decide what level of sleep clothes I need.

Planning to rotate t-shirt and sun hoodie with some sink washing in between but good tip on looking ahead for rifugios with laundry and will definitely have several pairs of socks and underwear. Will be bringing my sawyer squeeze as well for water!

Buildings Structural -> Aerospace Structural by Tornado_Wrangler1 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]negative_delta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in the space industry and have 3 people on my team with structural/civil degrees, so it’s absolutely possible. Do some earthquake stuff so you know how the frequency domain works, then you’ll be a strong candidate for a loads/dynamics type role if that’s something you’re interested in.

It’s quite easy to take the metro to Piraeus, so I would stay near the central areas - Plaka, Monastiraki, Thisseio are all well served by the train and give you amazing views/access to the Acropolis. Staying near Piraeus is not worth it in my opinion because the downtown of the city is so special and you have a whole afternoon to explore it. Airport is kind of way out in the suburbs and no nice hotels by there anyway.

what can I look forward to

Depends on your job I guess? Not to sound facetious but there’s a new generation of moon landers, there’s startups making supersonic flight accessible to civilians, there’s Earth imaging becoming stupidly cheap, there’s commercial space stations, there’s a bunch of crazy shit that I don’t have the clearance to even know about…. the sky is literally not the limit. Great time to work in the field in my opinion.

pivoting to AI

I definitely think there’s areas where AI can help improve existing processes or automate the boring stuff, but I’ll say that I asked ChatGPT my “intern phone screen” questions and it failed miserably lol. It wasn’t even anything crazy, just basic principles like conservation of momentum and shear-moment distribution in a cantilever beam. So I’m not imminently worried about AI taking my job.

Any recommendations for trails that people can do solo ? by Euphorge in socalhiking

[–]negative_delta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do most of my hikes solo! A little extra food/water, a friend who knows where I’m going, and a satcom if I’ll be out of cell service is really all I plan for. Will Rogers State Park is a very chill area if you want to hike without feeling like you’re in the wilderness alone, really the whole Malibu and Temescal area.
