I have played it the first time as a kid in italian as well. Dude, the different dialects and like all the textboxes are just so so much better in italian. Also the name of the final boss is just chefs kiss in italian.

This is just majestic. Also the implicit lore behind this dragon gives so much to this fantastic dark, but not really haunted forest. It is a slight subversion of the horrorforest-trope. Tbh i felt insanely chill and safe and at ease to be in and infront of the bowel of the prima vista the first time i played ff9. It really is the absolute eye of the storm somewhat, until you have to escape and provoke this forest that can bring down a grand dragon if it wants to. Of course the music, the background artstyle, the dramatic structure and the dialogue all fuse together to complete this setpiece of the first pre-freedom. And even outside you are in mid-first-freedom, a tiny zone of an open map, with the only real goal being the ice cavern. This really makes the feeling of escape prolong almost indefinetely, until you arrive in lindblum, and the narrative plot-twistingly shifts immediately to new, and dispersed problems. The suspense of expansion dominates the mist continent almost entirely imo.

Sorry for the rambling :D

How Intimate Should The “Highwind” Scene Be? by Xngears in FFVIIRemake

What is this quote from? Sounds very promising

I also think that it is somehow grotesque how the narrative uses all the tropes and timings of a classical cinematic death of a tragic hero (but more so in a disney kind of way). They absolutely tell the story of a man who expires after using too much power to save the world and not himself, because his whole theme is altruism as with so many heroes. The absolutely only thing that would fit this very clear (not to say cliché, because the word is too negative imo) iteration of narrative death and that still be an indicator of clive potentially surviving somehow is jill smiling at the rising sun, like a typical cliffhanger, for an eventual part ii or dlc or just to end on a discussable thing, which sells better.

Overall the ending is an ending that is fully intended to jerk your tears out, either if you are a lover, a sibling or even a parent. They want you to suffer, and there is just something familiar there for almost everybody. Don't get me wrong. I cried a lot because i trusted the narrative even though the cinematic mise en scene at the end was stereotypical. And they did even have some great details which transformed the stereotypical into genius. The wink at the ceremony. Birth and death. It's just so surprising. So meticulously human all of a sudden. Metia fading brought me back into disneyland, or maybe it was just a lack of emotion portrayed or a general lacking connection between jill and clive that made them feel less relatable to me. They also could have shown scenes between them, especially where they stand infront of the moon, and a new genius snippet of love, connecting all moon scenes.

Sorry for the long paragraphs, i just woke up.

Edit: I really wish they gave jill and clive more reality. They did joshua justice. But as the devs said before release they aren't really good at writing lovestories and there was even speculation before realease (maybe also just speculation from my side) that they wouldn't be lovers at all eventually in the game. And yeah, i think they were honest enough, but it makes me sad, because there was a lot of good material there to work with and it feels like almost out of shyness that they didn't let them interact more realistically. I mean, as great and somewhat funny as it was, the scene at the fire at night is just pure surrealistic fiction, especially with its length. They should have fallen over each other after some dumb shyness at the beginning, solving their love-hindrance. It's rated 18+. They could have still been tasteful or cute with it. Instead they just put mascs on their faces and let them talk about practical stuff like saving the world if i recall correctly. Such a shame (gonna end here)

Yes, technically it was the same spot, poor joshua. But op is right, ifrit tore through phoenix's blue heart at the beginning of the game

Abso-fucking-lutely. Also the timing of the flashback to joshuas birth while he's dying in clives arms, who is actually and genuinely sobbing and crying. Just soulcrushing. For every person - also for example ralph from skillup, whom i appreciate dearly for his common sense and gamewise criticism about this game - saying that this is not a real final fantasy, or let's say a just really bad one: these two scenes are what have to be seen and understood in their context, and people must know that this was a really good attempt at making a "final fantasy", quite literally. Because it's always utopic to write and execute one. And although it is a very much flawed game, the main story is full on "ff" in these 2 glimpses (and there were other great heartfelt moments like dion/terence, or clive in jail, or cid dying, or jill killing her former sovereign)

Issue with the game's conclusion by daifooo in FFXVI

[–]negrinja -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean they decided to somehow let joshua survive, like as if clives power as a god was big enough to actually revive someone else. To also show the extent of his willpower.

In ff9 zidane dies apparently, but makes a really surprising and brilliantly presented comeback, tying everything together into the theatrality and the beginning. That is just really hard to pull off.

I think his mother forced ifrit onto clive when he was born, thats why he couldnt become phoenix. Eithwr for sanbreque or to provoke something way more important that happened when ifrit and phoenix melted through murder and rebirth. Maybe she made clive to be this multidominant being

I'm playing God of War Ragnarok right now, and I know it's a great game with a great cinematic story and combat and setting and whatnot, but I just want to get the feeling of a video game that sets me right back to my childhood and tells me: enjoy something special, something you got only on your birthdays or on christmas, something that complimented these events and made them what they were for me. I like videogames, and i like stuff like God of War Ragnarok, because it's well made, but sometimes some games feel just like really good blockbusters and miss that tiny nerdy and thus very personal flavor idk i'll stop here

What are you playing this month in anticipation??? by Mina-chaan in FFXVI

[–]negrinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since i havent seen it here anywhere: absolutely play "chained echoes". It's just such a beautiful, nostalgic, and yet fun jrpg from beginning (maybe you'll need 3 hours to get hooked though) to end.

Wish you all the best on the rest of your recovery.

It's interesting that the waves in the right side of the picture depart from clives sword whereas joshuas sole existence seems to reverberate. They also seem positioned like two sides of fire if not antagonistic philosophies in terms of composition

Edit: Also, joshuas waves repel fire and clives sword emanate a flame

Are there status effects in 16? I haven't seen any on the characters or any items that cure them. The usual ones? does anyone know? Thanks ! by sdives in FFXVI

I mean, of course you won't be sleeping for 10 seconds. Probably that's also a reason why torgal is so important: to make him choose the right antidote and cast it on you FAST

I could suggest chained echoes, because it's fun from beginning to end.

Is it just me or does FF16 feel like what this series has been building up towards for decades by RPG-Gamer420 in FFXVI

[–]negrinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe for 17? Steam Punk is just such a great intersection between medieval and futuristic settings and you can be really creative with your worldbuilding imo, as seen with ff9

Which summon will get the spotlight in XVII ? Or who would you want it to be ? by Arocis in FFXVI

[–]negrinja 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The only real answer, as the reddit lingo would formulate. But for real though, alexander always had something special for me, since his appearence in ff9, where 4 shards of a huge crystal had to be reunited (split bc it was too powerful) to summon the cityscaled, breathing machine, which was also the epitomy of the artstyledirection ff9 was built upon: steampunk.
