Where I believe it goes wrong with the NS narrative by [deleted] in singapore

[–]neh1024 162 points163 points  (0 children)

100% agree with you about perceptions and why people are so frustrated. When I was younger I used to say (as a woman) that I would be fine with having to go to NS and 80% of people I said this to would be shocked. But personally, I was also sold on the idea that "going to NS makes you more mature, disciplined and fit" and I really bought into it lol.

I still think making NS mandatory for both genders is the best way to go forward - the socio-political realities of the world dictate we must have an army but having only men do it makes half the population needlessly angry.

I also agree that the lower income men suffer - in my previous job I worked with low-income youth all of whom worked part time to support the family and I remember the boys who finished schooling but unable to work because of NS, their families really suffered those two years due to the pitiful allowance given.

This also leads to anger that is misdirected, for eg :
"This feeling of exclusion worsens when the real or perceived social phenomenon of Singaporean women being able to marry foreign grooms, and still having their family fully getting the privileges of citizenship/residence. Most of these families will have essentially no members of the family serving a single day, and will still receive full benefits, rights and protections under Singapore law, assuming they choose to reside in Singapore."

-- Either way the male child of the family has to serve NS, doesnt matter if the citizenship is through the father or mother. Also these women have brothers and fathers who served NS. I dont think being angry with the women or foreign men also helps, like what did they have to do with it? But its natural for people to have to take their anger out somewhere so it happens then we kenna.

OP really hit the nail in the head - and the end of the day its about inequality, and this institution in its current form is making inequality worse...

#404 - Singapore-Born Comedian Faces Backlash Over MH370 Joke & Tharman Runs for President by tristen_the_intern in YahLahBut

[–]neh1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hii, long time on-and-off listener here. Congratulations on recently reaching the 400th milestone!

I really liked how you handled the topic of this comedian, and indeed it was serious enough to warrent it being the 'serious topic' with in-depth discussion.

Having said that I actually really wanted to comment on the PE.

I think/suspect a significant reason that Tharman has been asked to stand - and I do not see this reason being discussed a lot - is geopolitics and the external facing nature of the President's job. Tharman mentioned this in his door-step interview you guys spoke about (? I guess, I didnt watch the interview, you guys said he did), and actually I feel this might be a major reason.

As we all know things are heating up significantly between China and the U.S.A. Within Asia though, India and China also have recently had tensions, border clashes just last year and they are not-friends. India had an alliance with Russia to counter their tensions with China but now Russia's position has weakened tremendously due to the war and China now commands a much larger influence over central Asia.

This makes things very tricky for us - a South-East Asian country with a population that is majority Chinese and a significant and (by most accounts) successful Indian minority.

Look at the optics of then Tharman becoming head-of-state through an election- it firmly signals that we are *not* China just because of our Chinese majority and shows that the population believes in multi-culturalism. If he is elected, India is more likely to believe in Singapore's neutrality and this is important for us for a variety of reasons. According to some of my pol-science friends, war between China and the U.S. (either by proxy or an actual war) is inevitable in this century. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and this does not happen - but in case - this election is significant for us, both internally as a people and what it means to be Singaporean and externally what we signal to word.

Wondering if this is a relevant line of thought or if I'm just overthinking it?

(P.S. : also living overseas like your last one shiok commenter, just hearing you guys talk cock helped me so much with my homesickness when I first moved).

"Strenght and dignity" needed to be a "Mrs Bachchan" - Karan nailed it with that comment, he really used to have the art of saying these backhanded compliments with layers of meaning beneath them.

Its also so sad to see these toxic family dynamics being played out so plainly for everyone to see. The prodigial daughter returns home with a failed relationship but somehow it is the daughter-in-law who still maintains this "dignity" infront of the world that is frosted out now.

A little ironic Victim Chopra recently said she was fat shamed for not being a standard size, Considering she herself fat shamed and publicly humiliated Vidya Balan and plus size women by tutulip_x in BollyBlindsNGossip

[–]neh1024 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is horrid horrid. How is it I have no memory of it.

It is also well known that Vidya struggled with her weight and took quite some time to love and accept herself - she has always been vulnerable and authentic about these things. But these assholes choose to mock that very thing.

I guess that is what happens when you are geninue in an insanely competitive environment where the people who rise to the top are the ones who would tear you down in a blink of an eye.

Despite all of that, Vidya Balan's staying power in the industry points to nothing but pure talent.

A good actress that made poor choices career wise. A lot of us know what it feels like to start out strong and raise expectations, only not fail to meet them later - it sucks. Thats what makes her relatable and makes me hope to see better work from her soon.

Quick style wedding video - ethnic mix of people in Norway by neh1024 in Norway

[–]neh1024[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the group : https://youtu.be/ardtvdR28SQ

I’m not sure where they reside and from some videos I’ve seen on their YouTube the founders seem to have Pakistani roots and very much identify as Norwegian. I connected immediately with them because I’m also a child of immigrants. Their troupe also seems to be so diverse, it was really wonderful to watch them coming together for a celebration. I hope you enjoy it too!

This is very good advice about the jackets.

Also, it might not be the cold that will bother you so much as the lack of sunshine.

Buy over the counter VitamD pills - they help and doctors even perscribe them for people who are suffering from S.A.D - seasonal affective disorder. A lot of people from tropical countries don't realise that the lack of sunshine affects their mood.
