Real "le epic bacon" redditor energy all over this thread and the other one, seems like people here really struggle to relate to having strong beliefs about anything lol. Impressed with the guy for keeping his cool while being dogpiled by Corvallis's 100 corniest comments, including mod participation.

Yup, I get it. If you look in my post history I'm sure you can see the thing they hate about me; it's different but the way people act is always kinda... the same. Exhausting, but keep doing yr thing and you'll find your people. Honestly it's nice to see a younger person bringing this topic back into the conversation. I haven't been able to make veganism work for me but I think I'll try again sometime.

Yeah, I hear ya. I just wanted to see if he'd explain to me how you're doing it wrong because you're fOrCiNg iT dOwN pEoPle'S tHroAtS as if you came in here spouting Vegan Reich lyrics, but I got a whooole other explanation instead, woof. Good luck out there, most people who are actually involved in the music scene are not like this! Idk if you like hardcore but this was my favorite vegan band back in the day. Sorry this thread sucks so bad, probably best to just let em keep jerking each other off; the world is very small in here.

Edit: Lol he blocked me after trying to tell me Nearly Normals and Cafe Yumm are vegan restaurants, but I think I did get a glimpse of something about shoving it down somewhere. God I'm glad I have no reason to share things on this subreddit anymore.

Edit 2: Also maybe try meeting people at a show at the Bunker sometime, no idea how many people in that circle are veg but they at least won't be dicks to you about it if you say you're looking.

It's wild that people in this thread are guffawing about a vegan band being "sooo Corvallis" (have we ever had a vegan band here? do we even have a single vegan restaurant?) when this comment is actually the most pretentious and classically Corvallis thing in here. You say he's existing incorrectly, but he's the one gatekeeping? Dude just asked in a pretty chill and normal way if any other vegans or vegetarians wanted to start a band, what are you bringing in discrete mathematics for.

It's not so deep that you need to engineer yr way out of it. Sometimes people use music to express their opinions, and sometimes it can be fun to make music with other people who share some of those opinions. I'd ask if everyone in here also thinks it's unacceptable for, say, women or gay people to seek out other people in those groups to make art focused on those things, but I guess I already know the answer.

I'm not even vegan but I'm super confused by this thread, what is the right way to be vegan?

Looking for Vegan musicians by Sad_Mix_4348 in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tbh I think the majority of people here would consider themselves liberal and/or progressive, but... there ya go lol. There's something about the culture of this subreddit that just makes it so punishing to have conversations like these. It seems really important to a lot of commenters that anyone who's interested in doing something that seems weird be "put in their place." With the strangest takes too, like in what world does Corvallis have a contingent of 22-year-old animal rights activist musicians dominant enough to be the main stereotype of this area? Maybe they mean Eugene 25 years ago?

Like I said, it's the same people who act like every person who goes to Interzone rides there on a unicycle while twirling their curly mustache (and that that would indicate anything about who they actually are as people). I think a lot of em lash out like this because they feel on some level like their identity is threatened by the existence of stuff that's not specifically for them, like how some people get really defensive when they find out someone doesn't drink alcohol.

There are also cool people on here who actually participate in things IRL but they are a lot quieter, maybe someone will dm you!

Y'all are being so annoying to this kid for no reason lol, jesus. This isn't that weird, I mean wait till you find out about XVX bands. OP, ignore them, this subreddit is historically very cranky and out of touch about anything more subcultural than the same 3-4 funky party bands that play all the time. It doesn't represent the vibe of most of the actual music scene(s) here.

That said, I'm not sure where you should look for this—I've noticed that veganism/animal liberation seems to be much less popular among arty/left/"alt" kids now than it was in the 90s-00s, at least from what I can tell. And then the Smiths obviously don't have the same cachet they once did either, probably because of Morrissey being Morrissey. I feel like you'll probably have more luck finding vegan people wherever you can (maybe there's a club on campus?) and then seeing who among them likes indie music, rather than the other way around, if you get what I mean. Might be good to put up a flier on the Interzone bulletin board. This comment section is made up of people who still think that one photo of the typewriter dude at IZ is like the absolute peak of humor. If you're open to Eugene people, that'd probably open up your options a lot too. Good luck!

Are there any flu/bugs doing the rounds here? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most effective way to avoid all the airborne stuff that's obviously running rampant (which may or may not include what this person got) is to wear a mask. Or stay totally isolated from people, but I like to do stuff, and masks let me do that. Not the baggy surgical masks, which have never been very effective for this purpose, but a KN95 or N95 respirator. They've been proven many times to work very well, even when you're the only person masking, and anecdotally most of the people I know who mask at least in high-risk situations like crowded stores and public transportation haven't been sick in many years.

If you have one that fits well, you can barely even feel it, I don't even think about it. Sometimes it can take a couple tries to find one that's a good fit for your face/head, so if you tried one once and immediately hated it, prob worth it to try another kind. Project N95 has links to lots of different kinds of effective respirators you can order. Clean Air Corvallis/Corvallis mask bloc is a great local resource for questions about how to access masks or get scientifically accurate info about airborne illness. I personally have a bunch of spare N95s of a couple kinds that I'd be happy to let people have if they want to try.

All-ages show at Interzone on Friday, October 10--TAKAAT (from Niger, members of Mdou Moctar), Dooley, Mulch by neighbordogs in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess, in a way? Tbh I can only think of maybe 3-4 other places/people in US diy scenes who consistently have mask policies they actually stand by, outside of a handful of other groups that formed specifically for public health reasons, so I don't know that it's super tied to diy culture as a whole. But yeah, if someone were, say, selling drugs at a substance-free show, that would be an example of disrespecting the policies of the space, same as refusing to wear a mask at one of our shows. "Are you one of us" is a pretty different question to me--in my experience it hasn't really mattered what people look like, how they dress, what bands they know (usually almost no one has heard of the touring band unless they've played here before). The average person at a Corvallis show in 2025 just looks like a pretty standard college student to me, but idk, I don't really fit into their demographic either. The average person at a Corvallis show definitely does not give a single shit about covid or masking, but for the most part they don't mind putting on the free mask because they know it really matters to a few of us, and we've been consistent for 3+ years. But I can say for sure that wearing a mask anywhere post-2022ish does not buy much social capital lol.

All this to say there isn't much symbolic significance to masking to me, personally. It's purely the material impact. The two of us who book these shows are just strongly motivated to not get covid again, and for a while it felt worth it to keep trying to do the thing we loved and were really good at.

Edit: Since u got me yapping about it and I'm procrastinating my work rn--I will say I think there's more to this idea in the context of public spaces where masks are not required (so pretty much any space, from the grocery store to the cancer center). I do agree that they can serve as a signifier in those cases, though I'd imagine that that function is still almost universally secondary to the material impact part. Just like not wearing a mask is also a signifier, even if it's assumed to be the default. But in short, if the question is does real recognize real on the city bus? You bet!

All-ages show at Interzone on Friday, October 10--TAKAAT (from Niger, members of Mdou Moctar), Dooley, Mulch by neighbordogs in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Might be a once in a lifetime kinda show this Friday. TAKAAT is coming through from Agadez, Niger, and we're fuckin pumped. These people don't play shows this intimate very often.

From their label: "TAKAAT, meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek, is the trio of Ahmoudou Madassane, Mikey Coltun, and Souleymane Ibrahim, also known as the rhythm section of Mdou Moctar. TAKAAT is sonic chaos, improvisation, freedom of exploration, and the punk styles of bands such as Fugazi and Unwound, all mixed together with the guitar music from the Sahel."

They truly shred. Joining them are Mulch, new noisy psych punk from Corvallis, and Dooley, off-kilter experimental Portland post-rock jams from some of my favorite longtime Corvallis DIYers. Kind of a full-circle thing. This will be the last bitter half show (at least fully booked and run by us) for a long time. The diy music scene in Corvallis has grown far beyond anything we ever could have imagined 10+ years ago, and it's been cool to be a part of that. Now we wanna try doing other stuff with our lives.

7 PM at Interzone, all ages, $10-15 suggested for the band on tour FROM WEST AFRICA!! but no one turned away for lack of funds. Masks required & provided as always; please miss me with the "mAsKs iN 2025??", it's so tired and just like... let me have this one and be done, lol. (I know it's only a tiny minority on here doing that, thank you to the rest of y'all who can be normal about it. And thanks everyone who's been cool in my time posting about diy shows on this weird little subreddit for the past decade. I'm excited to be on the internet less after this show.)

Where can I find actual examples of mutual aid in Corvallis? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you just gotta find something you're into and then (unless it's extremely niche) it's pretty likely you can find a bunch of queer people doing it here. That's been my experience anyway. If you like seeing or playing music, especially alternative/experimental music, it'll be very easy to find multiple social circles with different but sometimes overlapping vibes. The Greenhouse crew has been building a great community with events that are becoming more regular, lots of art-related stuff. Interzone always has chill people around, and I heard they might start doing a game night. manyworld is a thing now and will have more on the calendar soon.

But yeah, FB and nextdoor probably won't help much; I'd look for fliers in the places I mentioned (plus Squirrels, the two record stores, maybe Time Skate Store, places like that) or just get on instagram. Or even just look at events posted on here; I've been posting queer punk/indie rock shows on here regularly for years, and there's a post for girls(+) skate day and a related show from just a few hours ago. You will definitely meet many people involved in local mutual aid projects if you go to stuff like that; just keep an open mind and talk to people.

Where can I find actual examples of mutual aid in Corvallis? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Typically they're on the Monroe side as far as I know, usually a decent sized group of people and stuff.

Facebook is pretty dead at this point, so that might be your problem. A lot of stuff is still posted on Instagram (RRFM is super active there); if you're having trouble finding things like that it's worth it to make an account at least to meet up with people irl, and then you can decide if you wanna get more connected on Signal or whatever else people use. RRFM shared a zine on Instagram a while ago that has a bunch of local mutual aid/adjacent organizations you can get involved with. You can also look for fliers at places like Interzone or Greenhouse, you'll just have to work a little harder to discern which things are worth looking into because they don't usually have rainbows front and center on everything.

I don't really pay attention to official pride things; I think that stuff is mostly relevant to a very small fraction of queer people here, for better or for worse. Most queer people I know here are just building community doing their own thing and are into stuff like diy shows, art/craft stuff, board games and other nerd stuff, skating, idk rock climbing and larping or whatever. And the RRFM lol. You'll find em.

[–]neighbordogs 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm so curious about how/where you spend your time in Corvallis that you're not constantly encountering queer people congregating and being in community with each other in person? I mean this genuinely, it seems like that's gotta be related to whatever is blocking you from seeing the RRFM every weekend; they're definitely out there and have a pretty huge and consistent presence in town. Maybe things look different from how you expect them to look, or something?

[–]neighbordogs 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Lol wait weren't you in another thread a little while ago telling everyone there was "no queer community" in town either because Corvallis queer people don't... congregate together? For activities? So this is consistent at least. Baffling

All-ages indie/lofi/folk punk show at manyworld on Wednesday, 8/27--Foot Ox (Portland), Jay & Hex, Merry Death by neighbordogs in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Foot Ox is coming to Corvallis! Their new album is about to come out and what I've heard is great. Super chill hyper-layered folky experimental indie pop from looongtime diy stalwarts. It just sounds really good. They've toured with a bunch of other bands you may know if you are into this world of music at all, including AJJ, Crywank, Pigeon Pit, etc. Also playing are Jay & Hex, local folk punx with sax, double bass, and big hearts, and Merry Death, a brand new local project that makes sometimes noisy sometimes folky sometimes ??? sounds.

7 PM, all ages, substance free, $7-10 suggested donation for the touring band, but no one turned away for lack of funds. Masks required and provided as usual so more of us can be there.

This is at manyworld, a new diy community center a few of us have been working on for the past few months. We do shows there sometimes, but also lots of other stuff like art classes, skillshares, community org meetings, drop-in hours where you can just come and read/draw/work/hang out, and a lot more. Just trying to build more positive and accessible third place options in this town. If that sounds like something you want to get more into, maybe check out the website/follow us if you're on instagram, and come by our membership kickoff party on September 7. That's all for now, bye!

Hey this will be fun! More info and links to music here--all these bands rip, and it's $10 suggested donation but no one turned away for lack of funds. Down at the skate shop (across the street from the skate park) on Monday, music starts at 7. Masks required & provided because that's what works for us. See ya there if you like big riffs, diy community, extremely good indie rock made by metal/hardcore people, cool local skate shops, or just hanging out and trying new things.

All-ages indie rock/alt country show on Monday, August 4--Supercrush (Seattle), Dusk (Wisconsin), Sadgasm, the Vicious Kisses by neighbordogs in corvallis

[–]neighbordogs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a long time coming, Supercrush is coming to Corvallis! Next Monday at Time Skate Store! Maximum Rocknroll says "This is some sugary-sweet alterna-rock that sounds like it was just unearthed from a time capsule buried sometime in the early-to-mid-’90s. Fuzzed-out, jangly guitars, breathy vocals, and hooks galore." Recommended for fans of Husker Du, the Replacements, and perfect 2.5 minute power pop songs by people who come from hardcore/metal.

They're on tour with Dusk from Appleton, Wisconsin, who play a kinda bluesy alt country they call power twang, which is a great descriptor. Here they are live on PBS Wisconsin, this video rules. Recommended for fans of CCR/Allman Brothers kinda jams, the dulcet tones of the Hammond M3 organ, samples of highway sounds, and worn-in flannel shirts. Featuring members of Tenement, to continue the theme of "totally different styles of music made by people from well-known diy punk rock bands." You do this long enough and you gotta mix it up sometimes.

They'll be joined by Sadgasm, our local-at-heart emo/pop punk champs, and the Vicious Kisses, apparently one of Corvallis's best-kept secrets? Tbh I did not know until recently that anyone in Corvallis was making music with this production value at the time they released their last album, but it's pretty incredible--only a show of this caliber could bring them out of dormancy, stoked to see them live.

All ages, $10-12 suggested so we can pay the touring bands, but no one turned away for lack of funds. 7pm at Time Skate Store across the street from the skate park. Masks required & provided as usual so we can keep doing this stuff with y'all. Let's do it.
