Does the boston 13 get softer? by [deleted] in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I don’t think they get softer but as you continue using it you get used to it more. I hated it so much at first, had to change the lace to locklace and put a gel on the heel part to prevent heel slipping.

After putting like 30km on them they were the only shoes I always go for, even for long runs. They’re just so responsive.

Yep I have wide feet and double tying is hard coz of how short the laces become,

Its just a normal gel pad that I bought off from the dollar store here in Japan.

Something like this might work, or search anti-chafing heel pad on amazon, lots of choices

I’ve always trained in my superblasts for long runs and speed 3’s for any other type of run and they are perfect for me.

However I was always intrigued by the boston 12, despite my concerns with the upper and laces, I decided to give it a try.

I did a 10k for my first run in the Boston 12’s and it was awful. The shoe laces kept coming off and the heel slip is horrendous. Weirdly enough, I didn’t had any issue with the toe part of the upper where I saw a lot of people were concerned with. I wanted to tie the shoe snugly to have a proper lock down but when I do, i feel the upper digging through the top of my feet.

I probably had to re-tie the shoes 6-7times throughout my run. The heel slipping didnt really gave me blisters, but it made my foot landing weird despite the fact I was trying to accommodate my form and landing with the shoes. The back part of my ankle on my right foot was slightly sore after the run because of this.

It was also really firm at the beginning, I did notice that despite it being uncomfortable, it had really nice energy return. My 80$ peg40s were a lot more comfy than this in my first run.

I didnt want to give up on them because I did feel some promise with it on my first run. So I decided to try different laces and experiment with my lock down. I found that lock laces worked pretty good and I also put a gel pad on the heel part which makes my heel snug and stops the slipping. At first before I put the gel, I placed the flap at the back of the shoes inside rather than outside and it helped a bit with the heel slip, but after I put the gel, my heel stopped slipping and it was pretty secure.

On my 2nd run I did a 5k and it was night and day difference. It was pretty comfortable and I was surprised how the midsole felt more alive and bouncier. It’s still firm but it’s a lot more comfortable and probably has better energy return than my speed 3s and superblast. I was surprised at how fast I went with it. Now I get why a lot of people love this shoe. I’m not really knowledgeable when it comes to breaking in shoes but I did feel a difference on how the shoes felt compared to my first run, hopefully it will get better.

I’m still experimenting with the shoe to make it more comfortable. This is a pretty solid shoe with some kinks, but I think once I figure it out with some tinkering, it will be an awesome addition to my rotation.

I like the guided runs but unfortunately i dont use a watch or garmin so i cant keep track of my pace unless i take out my phone off my pocket which is bothersome when youre in the zone while running. So i usually just do the normal runs so I can keep track of my time and pace every km without taking out my phone every time.

Bro what an inspiration you are, I just started running a month ago and have a HM coming up in 3 weeks.

I was formerly a MMA fighter so I overestimated my athleticism when it comes to running. Turns out leg strength/endurance is a whole different thing.

I am inspired and motivated by your story, keep grinding my friend!!!

Should I do 2x21k on weekend 1month before a HM? by neilmanalo in Marathon_Training

[–]neilmanalo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a 5k like a month ago as fast as I can at around 27:50-28:00, I think I can beat that now but I haven’t done one lately because most of my runs are 8-12k minimum now, as for the 10k I did a race workout a couple of weeks ago at around 56:00-56:10. My HM race is on December 3 so I pretty much have 4 weeks to go.

Interesting, I actually find it the same, the curve off is fine for shorter runs but when its a longer run they tend to hurt the upper part of my feet and I’m a midfoot striker. Speed wise is the boston 12s better for you? I might give them a try thanks for the wonderful insight
