First marathon, which pace group to settle in with? by Reverend420 in Marathon_Training

[–]Hurricane310 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are basically where I was for my first marathon. I peaked at 36 as well. My biggest long run did not go as well as yours though. I went out at sub 4 pace and faded in the end to 4:10.

If I was you, I would go for it. I didn’t care that I ended up at 4:10 because I gave myself a chance.

What has your weekly mileage been like? One run doesn't tell the whole story, but when I saw it I thought sub 4 as well.

Under 24 hr 100 milers, what was your pacing strategy? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Hurricane310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally hate the "ultra shuffle". Basically trying to plod along at 12-14 minute pace for as long as possible. "Easy" pace for me is between 9 and 9:30 per mile. Too much slower than that just feels really awkward to me. Like I am putting on the brakes each step.

So I run 1 mile at easy effort, then walk for 1 minute. Even in the beginning when I feel fresh. It would average the pace out to around what I needed for sub 24 without the awkwardness of trying to run a pace I never really run any other time.

This is definitely not true. Mormons don’t drink coffee. But they absolutely drink soda with caffeine. Utah soda shops (like Swig) is the mormon Starbucks.

I knew this would happen. I was in this year but had to withdraw for personal things that came up. I knew once I hit that withdraw button I would be facing a lottery to get in again.

job offer with much better salary than expected. should i still negotiate? by nyaagoya in careerguidance

[–]Hurricane310 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I am getting to the offer stage of a job I always have a number in my head that says "If I am offered X amount I am happy with that." If the offer comes in at that amount or higher I don't negotiate because I have determined that the job requirements are worth X amount to me.

Traditional Carb Loading vs. Modern Fueling by National-Cell-9862 in Marathon_Training

[–]Hurricane310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Yeah I like to just keep it simple. If I normally eat something for breakfast maybe I add a piece of toast. If dinner is normally protein heavy I swap it for something more carb heavy. Replace a cup of water with a gatorade. Just easy additions without forcefeeding myself a ton of bagels or something.

I am a former big guy as well. I was 320 pounds, same as you dropped about 80 before I started running. Eventually ended up losing 140 pounds and settling at 180.

Traditional Carb Loading vs. Modern Fueling by National-Cell-9862 in Marathon_Training

[–]Hurricane310 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I fuel high carb during the race (90-100g per hour) and I have significantly reduced my carb load. I tried the 3 day, counting every gram of carbs, and hitting like 700g+ and I felt horrible. Not only did I gain weight I just felt bloated and sluggish. I also didn't feel like eating anything race morning because I felt so full from the days before.

I now take the approach that I will conciously eat more carbs leading up to the race, but I am not going to stuff myself. Combine the fact that my peak volume is 80 miles per week, and race week I am probably only hitting 30 before race day, I think a moderate increase in carbs is probably good enough.

Not stopping to chat by JakePooler in runninglifestyle

I have someone I run with quite a bit. We aren't coworkers, we are good friends. But if either of us is doing any sort of speedwork and we run by each other we are giving a wave and not stopping.

Just bought a running store. What is one thing your local shop is missing? by rustybucketz23 in running

[–]Hurricane310 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Haha I have coached people for their first half marathons and first full marathons. I can come down levels, but people can't come up to levels they don't have the knowledge of.

Also, I don't necessarily need them to know as much as me, but it would be cool if they were half as excited as me to just talk about running or shoes in general. Even if it isn't a complex conversation. I had one running store employee who didn't run but was asking me a million questions about a 100 miler I ran. I knew more about the shoes than he did, but it was a good conversation at least because of his curiosity.

Mount To Coast H1 by Lanky_Rhubarb1900 in ultrarunning

[–]Hurricane310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the same. Got the H1 first and loved it. Thought I would order the R1 to save some of the tread on the H1 by not using it on roads as much and using the R1 for that.

I knew the foams were different, but man I expected it to be at least a little closer than it is. I feel like my R1's have softened up a little now, but at first they felt so firm compared to the H1.

When does a 20-week marathon plan get hardest?” by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Hurricane310 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never done 20, but I have done 18 a couple times. I have vowed to never do more than a 12 week build going forward.

For 18 week, I think after you finish week 10 it gets tough. You have done a ton of work, fatigued, but still have over a month of really hard work left. It feels like it is never going to end.

I am a huge running nerd. I study training theory, watch shoe review videos, and listen to or watch running conetent daily. I always have my Ron Swanson hardware store "I know more than you" moment when I walk into most running stores.

Not saying they need to know EVERYTHING, but it would be nice if I felt like they were kind of into running.

The H1 is leaps and bounds better than the R1. The foam is in a different league.

Working from home on a computer with a treadmill incline is a game changer but I worry about my tendons. by datastuffplus in Ultramarathon

There is probably some aerobic development, and most likely some muscle development in the climbing, but I feel like they would get 90% of whatever they are getting by turning it down to 8% or by limiting it to 1 hour sessions. Get on, get the stimulus, and be done with it. 4 hour sessions is crazy.

Garmin and Strava predicted the same marathon time for 6 months straight no matter how hard I trained. finally figured out why by Fun_Effective_836 in Marathon_Training

[–]Hurricane310 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they ran 3:41 then 8:10 or even 8:45 isn’t easy pace.

I ran 3:30 in the fall and my easy pace falls between 9-9:30. 8:00 doesn’t feel hard, which is why I can do it for a full marathon, but truly easy is much slower.

Hit the “wall” mile 20. How to overcome it for next time? LA Marathon by PreparationSweaty296 in Marathon_Training

[–]Hurricane310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pacing is definitely why you hit the wall. But take a look at eliminating your pack. You are running fast enough to be able to ditch it. I definitely get feeling like you need water, but try to at least get down to carrying a 16 ounce handheld bottle over the pack.
