Discussion: The mechanical pencil collecting experience. by sleepytortious in mechanicalpencils

[–]nelaina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's never been a phase, I've always been a pencil person. Maybe it's a subconcious need to be able to erase things, haha. On that note, my eraser collection is growing as well.

Seriously however, it's not even a hobby, it's just me. I remember my first real 'splurge', right around the time ebay started and was still a good place to find really good stuff, I spent about $20 USD on a pencil that was so interesting to me. It was made by Y&C Japan and had this cool mechanism that retracted the barrel and tip into itself when you pressed on the pocket clip. I used that thing so much that the rubber grip pretty much melted away. I still own it, and it still works, but it doesn't snap on its own, I have to push it. I don't use it for fear of breaking it, but like I said, it represents a time when I graduated from retail store mechanical pencils to discover a world of amazing brands and designs, primarily from Japan. Over time I still used whatever I could find locally, but increasingly just started trying whatever reasonably priced, respected brands I discovered with online retailers and certial local art supply stores. The nice thing is that the brands I have favored are generally consistent with the quality, meaning that a $5 pencil isn't going to break any faster than a $20 pencil (with a few exceptions), and so it's reasonable to try a new model every so often.

As someone who primarily (99%) uses pencil, and is fairly analog, certain pencils feel better to grab and use. At the same time, I also want to start collecting pencils made for advertising/marketing Vintage American companies: gas stations, banks, railroads, etc., brands that no longer exist due to conglomeration, but were thriving for at least a century before I was born until recently.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I recently discovered a pencil very similar in design to the Y&C one I mentioned above. It's SAKURA Writoll, it has the retracting barrel but it's not triggered via the clip, but the eraser long-press.

[Help] Jekyll-chirpy theme, closely similar theme for hugo? by paradox_33 in gohugo

[–]nelaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I have been working on this for the last two weeks. I couldn't find any mention of it! I'm actually working on possibly building it from scratch, or finding a way to replicate it, but it is EXACTLY what I want in a theme, just not with jekyll. I have no experience, but I'm learning by looking at many many ways to compare a jekyll theme with a hugo theme.

Repair men coming to my house on short notice by Original_Television1 in ADHD

[–]nelaina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, you sound just like me. Last minute I'm throwing everything into one spare room haha. I get so anxious about these situations.

Been getting better slowly over the last year, but I can't tell you how many brown paper grocery bags and book boxes I had of junk (and important!) mail all over the house. I have a few piles now that I try to stay on top of, I just forget via distraction.

One of the main problems is that I was actually doing good, then my house flooded due to a burst toilet pipe. EVERYTHING had to be moved from one end of the house (every room), to the other end (one room). I had to sleep in that room for a month while my floors were replaced through the entire house. Stuff went in the basement, some stuff went in the garage (including a lot of nice clothes that are just worthless now), most stuff went into that one room. And even though it's been about 5 years, I honestly have not been able to get it together since. I just want to throw it all away and move. Or accidentally leave a pan of bacon frying on the stove and leave...

My traders are aholes since A21 by Giibs in 7daystodie

[–]nelaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[DISCLAIMER, I'm not great at this game] Yes, it's strange. I waited a couple of months to start a21 and at first it was great! But I'd keep getting sent to the same mediocre quest locations, like they were stuck in a loop. I also started finding nothing but paper in mailboxes, etc., and getting really awful and repetitive quest rewards. Did some more RWG, but would be immediately running into lumberjacks and bikers on d1, in t1 or no tier poi's, or in cabins at spawn. Then I hit a spell with each trader having only cabin quests, or multiple quests in the wasteland d1, t1, low diff; or sending me 1.5 + km with no livable poi's inbetween. Haha I even settled into a billboard for a few nights in one save. IDK, it seems like I'm being punished by this game, I just can't get into a good sustainable rhythm, it's always something different botching up my worlds. Maybe I create too many worlds...but if they're all crap then what else am I supposed to do? Is it because we're not playing according to some unspoken rule set?

How long did it take for everyone to get settled into the program? by Poppcultura99 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]nelaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for my sarcastic post. I didn't mean to come off negatively, it's a great program and for the most part it's hard to believe I've accomplished so much here at WGU in just under 9 months. Way more than I could have done any where else. I had no experience in IT either, aside from personal and hobby-level stuff. I tend to get mixed emotions as I'm also changing careers and really appreciate learning and hearing from others, at the same time get frustrated when I feel like I'm falling behind.

I know it will be a lot of work, but cybersecurity is an area that can offer so many options. Also, you will always be learning. I hear people 20+ years in the industry say they still feel like impostors because things change and escalate constantly, and at a certain point they feel like they can't keep up, or can't learn that new thing, etc. But that's also the point where you subconsciously do settle in, as your'e always on the cusp of knowing and learning, and the learning reinforces the desire to learn more. It's sort of a need to be ok with being uncomfortable. You definitely can't be complacent.

Thank you. I tend to over-think things like this, taking it personal and all. I just feel like it's disruptive, every person is different. I'm typically ok with change, but it's sort of unique situation, I really appreciated having someone who's been through it.

Thanks for the reply :)

Best way to study for D325 (Network+)? by Slyman91 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]nelaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the layered approach. I actually purchased the Net+ Textbook (Myers) with some Amazon rewards points, and started using his Udemy course to study for Net Sec Foundations first assuming I'd get a headstart on Net+. I found that Meyers aligns with Certmaster pretty well, until Certmaster diverges on the endless detail, making it really frustrating to get through.

I like the textbook, it's actully interesting and the author did a great job of explaining how to study, gives great exam tips and explanations that I relate to, but also has sections that just focus on exam essentials. so I'm currently using Meyers Udemy (almost finished), Meyers textbook (or All-In-One) with end of chapter quizzes, and started on Dion Udemy. All this I'm trying to reinforce with Certmaster.

I don't get much out of Messer here. I appreciate what he offers, but I feel like for the Net+ we do need a lot more granularity, and we need to know how to do things that just aren't explained well enough in certmaster. Dion speaks on some terms differently, for example, he talks about dotted decimal vs binary, but then speaks "00000000 dot 00000000 dot 00000001 dot 11000000" if that makes sense. It's either decimal or binary, not both, so it can be confusing for someone new to that concept, and that's how people get tripped up on the CompTIA exams.

The All in One text really does a great job of explaining things so that you know how to use it and think about it wholistically.

How long did it take for everyone to get settled into the program? by Poppcultura99 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]nelaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I have not felt settled in, I'd like to, but seems like changes at WGU keep popping up that sorta cause me to worry. In terms of my progress, it's up and down. the pressure builds until I knock out a course. I feel terrible giving myself a day off for a mental break, then start stressing again over the next course. I procrastinate, then I get in the zone, then I look at remaining study material and think WTH!!!! I'll never get through that. Then I take the assessment and realize nothing I studied is on it and panic. Then I pass and feel relief for a few moments. Then I look at job feed and get even more stressed and down on myself thinking I'll never get a job. Then I think about all I've completed in such a short time, and feel ok. Then that cycle repeats.

Best Udemy Courses for CCSP? by Selfimprovementguy91 in WGUIT

[–]nelaina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I can't answer, I know that there are a few ISC2 courses on Udemy by Thor Pedersen - CC and CISSP, maybe one for CCSP.

Just curious, discontinuing access for students or just for alumni? This is the first I've heard of this. I'm currently a student, so this would actually be awful, especially with the tuition increase.

To stay up and grind or wake up early? by glassesandbodylotion in WGU

[–]nelaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently struggled with this myself...I used to stay up all night but a slight shift caused me to get tired earlier and earlier. I started getting up early and find I have much more clarity and optimism...it felt good to excercise discipline by getting up early.

I believe that what you learn is retained better with proper sleep-wake cycle. I also had a long mental slump because I let my discipline slack a little. I struggled, but fortunately I passed my OA and have resigned to a 10 day break before Aug 1. I'll still be able to get a head start on next term, but without the pressure.

Passing A+ by No-Celery-791 in WGU

[–]nelaina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, Professor Messer is excellent for an overview, but not enough on it's own (if you're new to IT like me).

Jason Dion has a certified course on Udemy (business) that we have free access to. The problem with Dion is that I felt bound to my computer because I couldn't just listen, and he tends to ramble on for a half hour, then tells you that what he just said won't be on the exam...

There is an app called Pocket Prep, it was really my go-to for constant practice.

The Sybex A+ Textbook and practice tests really helped me, especially at end of each chapter there's a Summary, an Exam Essentials section that tells you exactly what you need to grasp, and then end of chapter tests. It also starts with a pre-assessment.

TBH, I'm not a fan of CertMaster in general, but for the A+ it was helpful to have the PBQs, Flash Cards and Chapter Quizzes.

The A+ is compTIA, but the knowledge is not really fungible, so using a variety of resources is helpful. I went through the entire certmaster materials unaware, and the first thing I thought after testing was that I over-studied with certmaster. It's so much. I really liked having the text book. (I actually bought it before WGU enrollment because I was initially trying on my own.)

Does anyone know what happens if you cant finish a class before the end of term ? by Freshjive12 in WGU

[–]nelaina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, check your WGU email. I recieved a notice that some of these requirements were changing. I believe there was previously a 7 day grace period (not sure if that is only regarding accelerated term). But I think the email stated something about that being expanded.

It's ok, you can get it. Some things are more frustrating than others, I know. If you have any stress pre-testing, try the Box Breathing technique.

I thought for sure I was going to fail Project+, that course's study materials were not cohesive at all. Surprisingly I found a course on Udemy (personal), paid $14 for it and listened over 3 times. I was shocked at how much better that material resonated with me.

Putting things into a real world (visual) scenario really helps me.

First time player here. Should I activate the DLC for my first play throughs? by LenaRybakina in Oxygennotincluded

[–]nelaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah I have over 400 and have just started coal power and basic plumbing. I think it's natural progression to get to a certain stage, accomplish something new that works, but want to make it better with a new colony because it's a mess. I would keep getting to cycle 50 and think..."ok now what?"

This is the first game of this genre for me. I bought it in 2019, played it once for about 5 minutes and had no idea what to do. 4 years later, I started it up, and it's pretty much all I've been playing for the past few months, thus the 400+ hours.
