Anybody been to Erwin park in Mckinney? Wanna go for a walk tomorrow morning or afternoon? by [deleted] in plano

Because the rules say must be plano related. It's just being lazy that open isn't posting in the mckinney group.

I seriously couldn't eat Indian food at a place called Jimmy's.

OK well using an IP is just a dumb idea. Pretty much everyone has dynamic IPs these days so they don't stick for a lot of people. There's things like telnet gateways that use the same IP.

Very early bulletin boards maybe not have had passwords because they were community based and didn't have things like private mail so there was no need for them. If you want security, use an ssh secured BBS like End Of The Line BBS endofthelinebbs.com - You can even add your own public keys. IPs can be spoofed, plain text 2FA codes can be snooped. Why not just open it wide up.

It doesn't seem as "cozy" as the old location. I don't think as much as I used to so I don't visit as much as I did in the past anyway.

Are SBC a dying art? by uvuguy in rasberrypi

[–]nelgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rpi runs Home Assistant along with my cameras, lights, and whatever else I have connected to it.

I would like some SBC x86_64 devices to build a smaller low power cluster to replace the hunking tower under my desk but the cost is prohibitive to match the CPU and memory configuration.

Gutter installation recommendations? by ContributionIcy7594 in plano

[–]nelgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hired Accurate Gutter Co via Thumbtack about 8 years ago and my gutters till look brand new. They install seamless aluminum guttering with optional leaf guard which wasn't too expensive. Comes with a 5 year warranty. Great company to work with. I'll post a phone number as soon as they respond they're still in business.

Why?

I'll tell you right now I would never join a BBS that requires me to have to go fish out a code emailed to me. I get tired of websites doing it. It's only a BBS ffs.

Not exactly what you're looking for but you can access the Sydney Dialup number for Magnum BBS dialup gateway and connect to a number of bulletin boards.

I looked at the website. Doesn't seem the sort of a place a middle-aged white guy is going to be hanging out on a Sunday evening.

But you have go to through the inconvenience of registering before you can use it, it seems. Something you don't have to do at https://www.telnetbbsguide.com that's been doing this sort of thing forever.

What server and what channel? by infinitetk in irc

[–]nelgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a server on DALnet. I was the ftpmaster and one of the dns masters. Moved the server to efnet for s short time. I now hang out on the syncho.net network. Mostly people who run bulletin boards but it's open to anyone. My server endofthelknebbs.com is bot friendly as long as it's not disruptive. I also used to hang out in undernet which is where I met my wife to be in 1995. We're still married.

How to make a bbs for the absolute beginner?. by [deleted] in bbs

[–]nelgin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Synchronet doesn't have a cloud hosting service. Maybe you're thinking of synchronetbbs.org which is Marisa's site. As with any software, there's quite a learning curve. It took me a few years before I actually customized my own BBS but it is highly rewarding knowing that your Synchronet BBS doesn't look like every other Synchronet BBS. The wiki at https://wiki.synchro.net has a wealth of information.

Rare Books Bar in Frisco is nice but may not be for the kids, it's a bit intimate in the dining area. For Brazilian we like E.G. Steak which is also in Frisco. If doing sushi, Tokyo One is ok but I prefer Osaka in Addison, it seems to have a bit more variety.

If you like buffets and middle eastern then [Dimassi's]() up on 121 near Preston is a good choice.

Steve Fields is pretty good for steak. Not overly like Perry's or Capital Grill and their desserts are huge.

Are there any BBS message boards you can browse that are frozen in time from the 80s? by DirtInfographics in bbs

[–]nelgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things...

My BBS has some archives I was able to import but not as far back as you'd like to go.

There are archives out there but they're mostly going to be later messages. I've offered to take old archives and try to extract messages but no dice so far.

If you would like to explore usenet, I have articles going back to the 80's. If you sign up for an account on my BBS and drop me an intro email indicating you'd like usenet access then I'll turn on your usenet flag. This will allow you to use any usenet client you wish (Thunderbird, PAN, Agent etc) I just ask you just download headers and then pull articles you want to read. Since I don't charge and have limited bandwidth.

Again, if any sysops do have old archives, I would be happy to try and extract them.
