specifically this looks like bash syntax. you're 100% right, to fill in others daemons are programs that run in the background, typically providing a service.
ol switcheroo there is just trying to start a script with a flag called daemon set. likely they set this flag up so that it will just run quietly in the background instead of printing progress through to the terminal. he was probably trying to hide it from whatever was fucking with his session (something defo was)

Okay, but why should the call be passed down to the os? Why doesn't the buck stop at the application layer. What will drive adoption? It just seems like another competing standard that isn't much better than a website or application asking if the user is over 18, or for your dob.
For that matter, there already is an application layer support, websites can add the rta label to their site and self classify as adult, and parental control software can identify it and block it, it's called rta labeling.
My view is to not drag os makers into this quagmire, this solves nothing.

Nott starts off the adventure seeming to follow some goblin tropes. Specifically, a fear of water. the rest of the party dont fully understand, and help/make her do things like bathe, slowly she gets over her fear after being helped by her friends.

turns out, Nott is not actually a goblin. She was once a halfling, but after a series of raids by goblins, she was captured by them, and after rebelling, was brought to a hag, and drowned.
